Miami Beach to Launch Text-to-911 Service

Starting this Sunday, June 1, the Miami Beach Fire Department’s Public Safety Communications Division will activate Text-to-911, offering residents and visitors an additional way to reach emergency services via text message. The feature will also be available countywide across all seven 911 centers in Miami-Dade County.

Text-to-911 is especially beneficial for hearing- and/or speech-impaired individuals or in situations where speaking could be dangerous. Simply text 911 (no spaces or dashes), include your location and the nature of the emergency, and avoid slang, emojis or group texts. Be sure to silence your phone to avoid drawing unwanted attention. For faster and more efficient communication in times of emergency, please continue to dial 911 whenever practical to do so.

Miami Beach Youth Commission

Since the start of the school year in August, the Miami Beach Youth Commission has been hard at work addressing the needs of Miami Beach youth. Youth Commission members have dedicated their time to learning about government processes and identifying ways to make an impact on their community.

One major issue the Youth Commission identified is the growing concern around mental health. In response, the Commission successfully advocated for a resolution to install positive mental-health affirmation signage at the under-construction Bayshore Park. Adjacent to Miami Beach Senior High and surrounded by local businesses, the park is expected to attract significant foot traffic. The Commission recognized it as an ideal location to spread positive affirmations and motivational messages.

Beyond local efforts, the Youth Commission also participated in the Florida League of Cities’ Youth Council Program, where they engaged with youth representatives from across the state. As part of this experience, members traveled to Florida’s capital to meet directly with state legislators, discussing key issues affecting youth in Miami Beach and sharing their perspectives on the importance of civic engagement. These meetings offered a unique and empowering opportunity for Youth Commissioners to represent their city at the state level and learn firsthand about the legislative process. With the mentioned initiatives, the Miami Beach Youth Commission continues to demonstrate how Miami Beach youth can create effective change.

The City of Miami Beach has launched new website content that highlights the three predominant architectural styles found throughout the city — art deco, postwar Miami modern and Mediterranean revival. The launch coincides with the 100th anniversary of the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris where art deco was introduced to the world before arriving in Miami Beach fewer than 10 years later.

The Wolfsonian–FIU Presents World’s Fairs: Visions of Tomorrow

World’s Fairs: Visions of Tomorrow, opening Friday, May 30 at The Wolfsonian–FIU in the heart of Miami Beach’s Art Deco district, spans Paris (1889) to Spokane (1974), with stops in Barcelona, Chicago, New York, Brussels and Montreal along the way.

The wonders of 19th- and 20th-century world's fairs —towering architecture and dazzling displays of the latest in technology, science, industry and art — promised fairgoers a bright and modern future. Featuring Wolfsonian collection works such as posters, books, souvenirs and one of the first consumer TVs, World's Fairs: Visions of Tomorrow spotlights the centerpiece pavilions, spellbinding attractions, and uplifting themes that drew millions to cities from Paris to Spokane, often during times of crisis and change. The exhibition leads up to contemporary artist Marco Brambilla's new video installation, After Utopia (opening fall 2025), which imagines a virtual expo of iconic structures from fairs held across time and around the globe.

The City of Miami Beach is looking for volunteers to help homeless, free-roaming community cats through the Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return (TNVR) method. In addition, SoBe Cats is looking for volunteers to work at the Kitty Campus adoption facility and/or to be a part of a feeding program.

The feeders play a vital role in the mission of SoBe Cats because not only do they supply the cat colonies with food and fresh water for survival, but they also act as the eyes and ears for cats in need of TNVR. Register to be a feeder.

Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer-free.

Sargassum

In the coming months, you may notice a heavier influx of sargassum (seaweed) along our shoreline. The city continues to coordinate with Miami-Dade County Parks to safely remove excess seaweed from our beaches. Clean-up crews operate on a daily basis to collect, remove, cut and turn the buildup of seaweed on the water line across our 7.5-mile beach.

Prior to operating heavy machinery, a team surveys for sea turtle nests and hatchlings each morning. Once the survey is complete, beach operations crews proceed to clean the beach until sunset, regardless of tidal conditions.

Feed the Fish: Artistic Recycling Pilot Program

Sea Turtle Season

Sea turtle season in Miami Beach began on April 1 and runs through October 31.

Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. As sea turtle hatchlings make their way from sand to sea, the stark contrast between the darker dunes and the reflection of the moon over the ocean helps them determine where to go.

Artificial lighting near beaches presents a significant hazard by confusing sea turtles and leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of heading to the ocean. Turn off the lights to help keep sea turtles safe!

Balloon-Free Miami Beach

Did you know that sea turtles, fish and birds mistake fallen balloons for food? Help keep our ocean and Biscayne Bay balloon-free while protecting our Miami Beach ecosystem! Balloons are prohibited in public marinas, parks and beaches.

Environmentally friendly decor alternatives include: paper garlands, banners, streamers, flowers, pompoms, pinwheels, bubble-blowing solution and kites.

Fines range from an educational warning to a $100 civil fine for each balloon up to $1,000 for the first violation. Fines increase for repeated violations within the prior 12 months.

Empower your family with our Family Pathways Program! The City of Miami Beach Family Pathways Program is a Children's Trust funded program. Our team of Success Coaches can provide individualized, wraparound care tailored to your family. With our team by your side, we’ll work together to address your family’s unique needs and connect you with valuable resources.

Families of children up to 18 years of age, who live or work in the City of Miami Beach and/or whose children attend a Miami-Dade County Public School within the Miami Beach community are eligible for the program. For families of children living with a disability who are enrolled in school, eligibility may be up to age 22. CERT Training

The Miami Beach Fire Department's Division of Emergency Management will be offering a Basic In-class Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training at Fire Station 2.

The six-day training will be offered in person on June 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 and 19.

CERT is a free national training program under FEMA that aims to educate residents, businesses and employees about disaster preparedness. CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace during an emergency until first responders arrive.

Participants will learn disaster preparedness, CERT organization, disaster medical operations such as Stop-The-Bleed, disaster psychology, fire safety and utility control, light search and rescue and more.

CPR and AED Awareness Week

National CPR and AED Awareness Week is from June 1 through June 7. The week serves as a reminder of the importance of learning how to perform CPR and how to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED). These skills can save lives in an emergency where someone experiences cardiac arrest.

Our Emergency Management team offers free hands-only CPR and AED classes for groups of 10 or more people. Reach out to DEM@miamibeachfl.gov or call 305.673.7736 for more information.

Report Issues to Our 24/7 Control Room

Call our 24/7 Control Room at 305.673.7625, day or night, to report any issues, such as:

• Streetlight outages 
• Potholes
• Cracked sidewalks
• Graffiti
• Overflowing trash cans
• And more!

Our Public Works team has operators working around the clock to make sure all issues get sent to the proper department to fix them. 

Report Code Compliance Violations

Help us keep Miami Beach beautiful! If you spot a suspected violation of the City Code, call the Code Compliance Department at 305.604.CITY (2849).

Examples of common violations include:

• Trash on a property or in an alley
• Unkept properties in your neighborhood
• Overflowing dumpsters
• Loud noise from construction or music
• Illegal short-term rentals
