MB Magazine Summer Issue
The summer issue of MB magazine is here!
As America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, our cover story takes you on a journey through the city's rich 111-year history — from the time of founding fathers John S. Collins, Carl Fisher and the Lummus brothers to the advent of art deco, the troop takeover of World War II and the “Miami Vice” wave that heralded the start of the modern era. You can read more in “Paradise Reimagined” on page 8.
This issue of MB is full of our city's history, including the Ocean Rescue centennial. We interviewed a number of lifeguards, including a three-time Olympic swimming medalist who came to Miami Beach after dazzling the world. Learn more in “Sentries of the Sea” on page 24.
The 2026 hurricane season began on June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. While the predictions call for a mild year, we don't have to remind you that one powerful hurricane can do a lot of damage as you'll find in “Worst-Case Hurricane Taught Us What Not To Do” on page 38.

FPL Storm Safety Tips
Hurricane season is here and staying prepared helps keep you and your family safe. Florida Power & Light (FPL) works year‑round to strengthen the grid and train crews so they’re ready to respond when severe weather arrives – and we encourage our community to take a few simple steps to stay storm‑ready too:
- Create and share an emergency plan with your household
- Stock up on essentials like batteries, flashlights, a radio, non‑perishable food, water and medications
- Have a qualified professional trim trees near your home before storm season
- Bookmark FPL.com/Storm, download the FPL Mobile App and save 1.800.4.OUTAGE (1.800.468.8243) in your phone
- If you ever see a downed power line, keep a safe distance and call 911 and 1.800.4.OUTAGE
A little preparation makes a big difference. Stay informed, stay ready and stay safe. For more helpful storm resources, visit FPL.com/storm.

Heat Season
Heat season runs now through October 31, when temperatures in our area can become excessively high. During this time, it’s important to take extra precautions to protect yourself and others:
- Stay hydrated throughout the day
- Wear light, breathable clothing
- Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours
- Never leave children, pets or vulnerable individuals in parked vehicles
- Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Take care and stay cool this heat season! Learn additional ways to stay safe in the heat.

Fight the Bite
Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible – especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Don't Be Trashy

Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.
Visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers for more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period.

Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season in Miami Beach began on April 1 and runs through October 31.
Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. As sea turtle hatchlings make their way from sand to sea, the stark contrast between the darker dunes and the reflection of the moon over the ocean helps them determine where to go.
Artificial lighting near beaches presents a significant hazard by confusing sea turtles and leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of heading to the ocean. Turn off the lights to help keep sea turtles safe!
Do not disturb or touch nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. Report any disturbances or lost turtles to Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1.888.404.3922, to Miami-Dade County Government at 305.310.3046 or to Miami Beach PD at 305.673.7900. Let's protect our beach ecosystem together! View the video below for more information.

Sargassum
Recently, you may have noticed an influx of sargassum (seaweed) along our shoreline. The city has coordinated with Miami-Dade County Parks to maintain our beaches where their crews use beach-friendly equipment to blend the sargassum across the 7.5 mile beach daily. Also, in state-approved locations, a county vendor removes the buildup of sargassum.
Prior to operating the heavy equipment, the Miami-Dade County Parks Sea Turtle Program surveys the beaches for nests and hatchlings. Once these surveys are complete, beach operations can begin the cleanup efforts and will continue throughout the day.
As always, we remain committed to keeping our beaches clean, safe and enjoyable for everyone. Check out the video below to learn more.

Pick Up After Your Pet

Iguana Remediation Program
As an invasive species with no known natural predators on Miami Beach, iguanas are able to wreak havoc on our environment. They eat vegetation on public and private property and destroy renourished dunes. They can also damage infrastructure by burrowing under sidewalks and seawalls. Iguana bites and waste can transmit salmonella, which can be harmful to humans and pets.
The city partners with contractors who work seven days a week to remove iguanas from public property. If you’re dealing with an iguana problem, there are ways to deter them from private property, such as filling in holes to discourage burrowing, hanging wind chimes or removing plants that may attract them. Iguana-resistant plants include milkweed, citrus and tough, thick-leaved plants. Never feed iguanas and do not leave pet food or ripe fruits outside.
Iguanas are legally allowed to be removed from private property, as long as it’s done humanely. Caught iguanas must be euthanized and cannot be released.
If you see a large group of iguanas gathering or notice an area with an influx of iguanas, please report it using the Miami Beach Gov app.
City contractor Blue Iguana offers a discount on iguana removal for Miami Beach residents.

Fair Housing Spotlight
Make sure you’re prepared for the costs of reasonable modifications if you request them. A lot of people are blindsided by the costs when their reasonable modification requests are granted by their housing provider. Remember, if you’re a renter and your housing provider does not directly take federal money, then you are responsible for covering the costs of any reasonable modifications you need. These can include things like grab bars in bathrooms, lowered kitchen countertops, and other modifications to the property that make life more accessible for people with disabilities.
If you need more information on disability access laws in housing or your landlord, HOA or condo association ever denies a reasonable modification request, please call Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. at 305.651.4673.
