FPL Hot Weather Tips
Do you want to learn how to lower your monthly energy bill? Florida Power & Light (FPL) has you covered.
Follow these simple tips to keep your home cool and your energy bill as low as possible:
- Keep blinds closed and invest in thermal curtains or UV window film.
- Run appliances in the early morning or evening to reduce heat buildup.
- Set your thermostat at your comfort level but know that each degree above 75 saves you 3-5% on cooling costs.
- Use ceiling fans to cool down rooms, but turn them off when you leave.
- Switch to LED lights and smaller cooking appliances to cut energy use.
- Check your air filters and consider upgrading to a more energy-efficient AC.
Use FPL's Energy Manager tool to track your usage or sign up for Budget Billing to even out costs all year long.

Protect Pets from Extreme Heat
The asphalt can get nearly twice as hot as the air outside. If it's too hot for your bare feet, then it's too hot for your pet's paws.
Here are some ways to keep your furry friends safe:
- Keep your pet hydrated.
- Know signs of overheating.
- Never leave pets in cars.
- Keep paws away from hot pavement.

Fight the Bite
Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible – especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Don't Be Trashy

#NoFilter

Fertilizer Ban
Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.
Visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers for more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period.

Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season in Miami Beach began on April 1 and runs through October 31.
Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. As sea turtle hatchlings make their way from sand to sea, the stark contrast between the darker dunes and the reflection of the moon over the ocean helps them determine where to go.
Artificial lighting near beaches presents a significant hazard by confusing sea turtles and leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of heading to the ocean. Turn off the lights to help keep sea turtles safe!
Do not disturb or touch nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. Report any disturbances or lost turtles to Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1.888.404.3922, to Miami-Dade County Government at 305.310.3046 or to Miami Beach PD at 305.673.7900. Let's protect our beach ecosystem together!

Pick Up After Your Pet
Pet waste can take a huge toll on the environment if it is not cleaned up properly. It is a contributing pollutant that affects our water quality. Support the efforts of Operation Clean Water by picking up after your dog. Forgot your pet waste bag? No problem! Pet waste stations are located throughout the city. Learn more.

Fair Housing Spotlight
If you have any sort of physical or psychological disability, under federal fair housing law you have the right to make reasonable accommodation and modification requests to your landlords, HOAs, condo associations or condo boards.
Reasonable accommodations are things that can be done to make life easier with your disability like installing better air filters if you have asthma or accommodating your service or emotional support animal. Reasonable modifications are changes to the structure of the dwelling to make life with a disability easier like lowering kitchen counters or installing grab bars in the bathroom.
If you or someone you know wants information on reasonable accommodations and modifications, help making these requests or wants to make a fair housing complaint because one of these requests was denied, call Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. at 305.651.4673.
