Annual Chlorine Purge
The Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will be conducting its yearly chlorine purge from Monday, September 28 through Sunday, October 11, 2026.
For more than 30 years, WASD has partnered annually with the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER) to schedule the chlorine conversion, which is when the department temporarily changes the method used to disinfect the drinking water supply at its water treatment plants.
Specifically, free chlorine, instead of the standard combined chlorine (chloramine), will be used during the treatment process. Free chlorine is considered an effective method of cleansing water distribution systems.
Crews may be seen flushing water lines throughout the county during this period to ensure that the entire distribution system is included. As a result, there may be intermittent, brief periods of lower-than-normal water pressure or instances of cloudy water. If you notice cloudy water, let the water run for three to five minutes until the water runs clear. This temporary, cosmetic issue does not impact water quality and is necessary to support WASD’s daily commitment to deliver safe, reliable drinking water year-round.
What to expect:
- Slight chlorine taste and/or odor in the water.
- Slight decrease in pressure when hydrants are being flushed in your area.
- No adverse effects to pets (except for tropical fish).
- Temporary possibility of higher levels of trihalomethanes (will not result in any adverse effects).
- Temporary discoloration of the water, as water rushing out of hydrant removes rust and sediment particles from pipes. This water is chlorinated, disinfected, and may be safely consumed.
At times during this two-week period, some customers may notice a chlorine taste or smell. This temporary condition will not cause any adverse health effects. However, dialysis patients may want to contact their doctor. The owners of tropical fish and managers of restaurants and stores with fish holding tanks are encouraged to seek advice from aquarium maintenance professionals.

Do Not Feed Community Cats
The City of Miami Beach community cat population is actively managed through the city’s Cat Program and is cared for by designated registered cat feeders who follow established feeding and colony-management protocols while abiding by all city ordinances.
If you are not a registered feeder with the city, please do not feed the cats. Unregistered feeding can interfere with the TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) Program which provides medical intervention and adoption placement. To ensure successful trapping, our registered cat feeders are notified in advance and asked to temporarily withhold food as part of the coordinated trapping process. When cats are fed prior to scheduled trapping, they are less likely to enter the traps, which can delay urgently needed medical care, sterilization and placement opportunities.
Our goal is to ensure that our city remains beautiful and welcoming for our residents and visitors, while continuing to provide responsible and humane care for the cats who live here.
If you or anyone you know are interested in volunteering or becoming a registered feeder, visit https://linktr.ee/sobecatsvolunteer and fill out an application.

Dispose of Yard Waste Properly, Keep the Bay Healthy!
Keeping landscaping debris out of storm drains and waterways can help reduce flooding and improve water quality. Leaves, grass clippings and other vegetative matter can clog storm drains and cause excess nutrients to runoff into waterways, harming water quality and marine life in Biscayne Bay.
Under the Water Quality Ordinance, lawn clippings and other yard waste are considered pollutants when they enter our waterways. Don’t blow or rake leaves and other debris into the street where they can end up in storm drains or nearby waterways.
For more information, visit MBRisingAbove.com or contact sustainability@miamibeachfl.gov
Report any blocked or damaged storm drains to our 24/7 Control Room by calling 305.673.7625.

FPL Storm Safety Tips
Hurricane season is here and staying prepared helps keep you and your family safe. Florida Power & Light (FPL) works year‑round to strengthen the grid and train crews so they’re ready to respond when severe weather arrives – and we encourage our community to take a few simple steps to stay storm‑ready too:
- Create and share an emergency plan with your household
- Stock up on essentials like batteries, flashlights, a radio, non‑perishable food, water and medications
- Have a qualified professional trim trees near your home before storm season
-
Bookmark FPL.com/Storm, download the FPL Mobile App and save 1.800.4.OUTAGE (1.800.468.8243) in your phone
-
If you ever see a downed power line, keep a safe distance and call 911 and 1.800.4.OUTAGE
-
A little preparation makes a big difference. Stay informed, stay ready and stay safe. For more helpful storm resources, visit FPL.com/storm.

Fight the Bite
Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible – especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.
To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.
- Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
- Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
- Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.
| |
Fertilizer Ban
Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.
Visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers for more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period.

Sea Turtle Season
Sea turtle season in Miami Beach began on April 1 and runs through October 31.
Our beach is a crucial nesting habitat for sea turtles. As sea turtle hatchlings make their way from sand to sea, the stark contrast between the darker dunes and the reflection of the moon over the ocean helps them determine where to go.
Artificial lighting near beaches presents a significant hazard by confusing sea turtles and leading them to mistakenly crawl toward the artificial lights instead of heading to the ocean. Turn off the lights to help keep sea turtles safe!
Do not disturb or touch nesting sea turtles or hatchlings. Report any disturbances or lost turtles to Florida Fish and Wildlife at 1.888.404.3922, to Miami-Dade County Government at 305.310.3046 or to Miami Beach PD at 305.673.7900. Let's protect our beach ecosystem together!

Pick Up After Your Pet
Pet waste can take a huge toll on the environment if it is not cleaned up properly. It is a contributing pollutant that affects our water quality. Support the efforts of Operation Clean Water by picking up after your dog. Forgot your pet waste bag? No problem! Pet waste stations are located throughout the city. Learn more.
| |
Don't Be Trashy
#DontBeTrashy! Litter can clog stormwater drains and worsen flooding, harming water quality and marine life. To help, dispose of trash properly and use marked recycling receptacles.
Let's all do our part to keep our beautiful Miami Beach community clean.

Fair Housing Spotlight
If a renter has a respiratory disease like COPD, asthma or severe mold allergies, a landlord’s inaction to remove a proven mold problem can be considered illegal housing discrimination. With South Florida's heat and humidity, mold is a common problem, and many people have debilitating allergies to it. Airborne mold particles can also be extremely dangerous and even deadly for people with certain respiratory diseases. In these circumstances, mold becomes a fair housing issue.
If you know of a landlord not addressing mold issues for tenants with severe mold allergies or some type of respiratory illness, please call Housing Opportunities Project for Excellence (HOPE), Inc. at 305.651.4673.
