ENVIRONMENT & SUSTAINABILITY

King Tide Season

Prepare for king tide season! During the upcoming king tide periods, the City of Miami Beach may experience higher than normal tides that result in street and property flooding in low-lying areas.

Higher than normal tides are expected during the following dates:

Now - September 22

October 14 - October 21

November 13 - November 18

In preparation for the king tides, staff continues to clean stormwater treatment systems to reduce pollutants from entering the waterways and also conduct inspections. In addition, temporary pumps may have been installed to mitigate flooding in low-lying neighborhoods.

Fertilizer Ban

Biscayne Bay provides recreational, cultural and economic well-being for our entire community. To help keep the bay healthy, the City of Miami Beach has prohibited the use of fertilizer application from May 15 through November 1. Show our bay some love and help keep it fertilizer free.

For more information on fertilizer application outside of the restricted period, visit www.MBRisingAbove.com/fertilizers.

Fight the Bite

Take precautions against mosquito-borne illness by applying bug spray, avoiding areas with high mosquito populations and wearing long pants and long-sleeve shirts when possible - especially during sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active.

To prevent the bite and spread of disease by mosquitoes, remember to drain and cover.

  • Flush water from water-bearing plants so they don't become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Disposing of excess water at least once a week disrupts the mosquitoes' life cycle, preventing mosquito egg deposits and killing existing larvae in the process.
  • Survey your garden and backyard, checking landscaping for current and future locations of standing water. Mosquitoes need as little as a bottle cap of water to reproduce, so every little bit counts.
  • Eliminate all sources of standing water by emptying potential water-holding yard items, including pots, buckets and wheelbarrows weekly. Make sure to drain items more frequently following rainfall.

Disturbing Sea Turtles is a Crime

Sea turtle season in Miami Beach runs from April 1 through October 31. The Florida Marine Protection Act makes it illegal to handle or disturb a sea turtle, its hatchlings, nest or eggs. Violations of the code can include fines and time in prison.

To report a violation, or if you find a sick, disoriented or injured sea turtle, contact any of the following numbers:

Miami Beach Police Department: 305.673.7901

Miami-Dade County Sea Turtle Alert Hotline: 305.310.3046

After hours: 786.719.6836

Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC): 1.888.404.FWCC (3922)

Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Ban & Chainsaw Phase Out Period

Gas-powered leaf blowers are banned in Miami Beach. Additionally, gas-powered chainsaws are now being phased out per ordinance 2024-4589. These initiatives are part of the city's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Transitioning away from gas-powered leaf blowers and chainsaws not only helps to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, but also helps to improve water quality, mitigate noise pollution and promote operational effectiveness.

The phase out period for gas-powered chainsaws:

Public Education: March 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024

Warning Period: November 1, 2024 through July 31, 2025

Full Enforcement: August 1, 2025

Lithium-Ion Battery Safety

Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in cell phones, laptops, electric scooters and e-bikes, can present a potential hazard to your home or condo. To minimize the risk of a fire, it’s important to review the manufacturer’s instructions and follow these key safety tips:

  • Make sure your device has the UL mark to certify it has been tested and meets safety standards.
  • Don't use off-brand products to charge your device.
  • Follow the manufacturer's charging and storage guidelines.
  • Charge away from hot surfaces and flammable objects.
  • Don't use damaged cords.
  • If the battery feels hot to the touch, unplug it and stop using it immediately.
  • Call 911 if you see smoke or flames.
