  • Stock up on easy to open can goods (that you will eat after the storm, as well)
  • Schedule Bulky Pick-Ups and trim trees and landscaping now at the beginning of Hurricane Season
  • Create a list of important contacts (names, phone numbers, addresses, and emails)
  •  Fill up your car with gas as soon as weather advisory is released (so you are not stuck at the pump)

  • Establish an evacuation plan and discuss with family members and roommates your evacuation plan
  • Corded telephone (in case the power goes out, cordless phones will not work)
  • Continuously check your medicines throughout Hurricane Season (so you have enough during a storm)

Miami Center for Mental Health & Recovery

A major milestone! From a vision to a reality, The Miami Center for Mental Health and Recovery had a groundbreaking ceremony attended by over 200 people. Super Champion, Judge Steve Leifman, who lived and breathed this cause every day to create a Mental Health facility. For over 15 years I have worked with Judge Leifman securing funds, shifting priority of custody to treatment while in custody.

Its exceptional moments like this that makes being in elected office so important to me. Thank you to everyone who made this happen for our community. It is a much needed resource for our County.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department

At the May 8th Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) leadership was assembled for a few presentations.

1). Acknowledged our Fire Dept. lead in championing passage of state law providing extra coverage for cancer due to high exposure and fighting to get proper use of personal protective gear at national level
2). Recognized and honored Fire Chief Dave Downey and Chief of Staff Liliana "Lily" Collazo on their service and retirements after a great career with the County
3). Introduced "Charlie" a rescued-adopted greyhound and his trainer Capt. Shawn Campas and our NEW "CISM" program, putting trained/adopted greyhounds with Firefighters in MDFR Stations for Peer Support

Also, EOC Director, Frank Rollason, presented our County with the National award we received for Hurricane Ready Housing. Always happy to recognize our exceptional MDFR Department.

At the annual Women's Fund Power of the Purse event, Commissioner Heyman received the Marilyn Gladstone Lifetime Achievement Award. "It was very special to receive this award from such an important organization which I have been involved with for over 20 years. I was truly humbled to receive this award," said Commissioner Heyman.

What's been going on with District 4...in pictures. It was great working with so many people and helping so many causes. Thank you all.

Environmental Action

Over 30 volunteers along with Commissioner Heyman and staff participated in the "Let's Clean Things Up" litter cleanup event at Ojus Park. Individuals and groups such as the Skylake-Highland Lakes Homeowners Association, Aventura Waterways K-8 Center and Krop Senior High Navy JROTC participated. The successful cleanup event yielded 81 bags of litter collected from public sidewalks and swales.

District 4 was there for the 2019 Baynanza clean-up event. Thank you everyone who participated in cleaning our Bay and shoreline. Great way to start the day.

Community Action Day at Haulover Park. De La Vega & Jewett, P.A. got their firm with family members to come do a big exotic plant and trash removal at the park. An incredible job was done by all. District 4 will be coming back with them and Sunny Isles Girl Scout Troops to plant trees at Haulover Park.

Commissioner Heyman hosted a District 4 Adopt-a-Tree Event at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus on June 1
st. Over 2,016 trees were given to Miami-Dade County residents to help build and maintain our County's green canopy and provide shade. Residents were also able to bring in their old lightbulbs and shower heads to exchange them for more environmentally friendly options.

At Haulover Park, Commissioner Heyman, District 4 staff, Sunny Isles Beach Commissioners Dana Goldman and Larisa,Svechin, Girl Scout Troops 460 and 1820, the De La Vega & Jewett, P.A. group, and Parks staff planted trees, removed invasive foliage, cleared out debris and spruced up the butterfly garden. This was District 4's second time at Haulover Park's north end for environmental clean-up. Thank you to everyone who came out to help and due to your efforts it now looks great for our community.

Jewish Outreach & Community Organizations

District 4 was at the annual JCS Matzah Mitzvah at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, working with the community to package up and deliver food to "in-need" people for Passover. Great turn out from the community to help with this great cause.

Commissioner Heyman sponsors Passover Disposal Waste Event for District 4 Jewish Community to help them get ready for Passover.

The Greater Miami Jewish Federation honored Ambassador Nikki Haley at The Main Event with the 2019 Friend of Israel Humanitarian Award for her leadership and lifetime support and friendship to the State of Israel. I enjoyed listening to her speak on take of the United Nations and international issues. A most enjoyable and fascinating woman, cannot wait for what's next on her public service path.

At Greater Miami Jewish Federation Judicial Reception that honored Judges Lisa Walsh and Kevin Emas. It was a great selection by the Jewish Federation for this year's honorees.

I was happy to support the Jewish Museum of Florida's Annual 'Breaking the Glass Ceiling' event. As a past honoree, I am proud to stand with all the honorees past and present.

Celebrated with Miami Beach Jewish Community Center (MBJCC) as they honored champions. Two of the honorees included long-time friends Gerald and Debbie Schwartz. It was a great evening of celebration.

District 4 was happy to celebrate Israel's 71st Independence Day alongside the Honorable Consul General of Israel, Mr. Lior Haiat. It was a great cerebration at the FIU Kovens Center.

Street Naming Ceremonies

Bridge dedication ceremony in Miami Beach to honor and celebrate Paul Steinberg for his public, civic and charitable service. This was a partnership of state, county and city legislation.

I was happy to be the County sponsor for the Road Dedication Ceremony in Miami Beach for beloved Rabbi Mayer Abramowitz. He was special to all, regardless of who and from where, he welcomed them with kindness and humor to Temple Menorah. Rabbi Abramowitz was at Temple Menorah as head Rabbi for 45 years.

Schools in Our Community

I had a great lunch meeting with Florida International University (FIU) President Mark Rosenberg and FIU staff regarding FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus and other school matters.

I attended Barry University's Distinguished Alumni Awards honoring graduates who, through their work and daily lives ,exemplify the Barry University core commitments. At this year's event it marked the final time Sister Linda Bevilacqua would present these awards before completing her tenure as University President. I was happy to be a part of the program honoring Sister Linda and thank her for all that she has done for the University and the community.

Students and staff of The Victory Center at their annual Field Day. The work staff does and results they get for our special children with autism is exceptional.  I am proud to be a supporter of this great school located in District 4.

District 4 at the Jennifer Beth Turken Heart Award End of Year Ceremony at North Beach Elementary. Thank you to The Turken Family for all that they do for the community and this amazing award given to our students for being kind. Kindness is an amazing thing to recognize.

At The Victory Center's annual Achievement Day, I was proud to be with teachers, staff and families as all the students who were recognized. It is a great school with great accomplishments for children with autism.

Animals & Parks

At the Feast with the Beasts event benefiting the ZooMiami Foundation. It was an evening at the incredible Zoo, showcasing great South Florida restaurants while benefiting a great cause. Had a fun evening with friends and "Zoo Guy," Ron Magill. I truly love this event.

16th Annual Love In at Greynolds Park. Great oldies music and good times in the park. Happy to be a host again this year and loved that we changed the date from May to March.

While in Tallahassee for Dade Days, had a FAC meeting with Executive Director Virginia "Ginger" Delegal. Then I visited the Animal Therapy Unit at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. They have the best canine therapy unit and I'm hoping Jackson Health System will duplicate their program.

At Humane Society of Greater Miami's annual fundraiser, Pawpurrazzi. It was a great evening raising funds for the animals. My puppy Dali adopted from the Humane Society, attended her first gala.

At the annual Miami International Agriculture, Horse & Cattle Show at Tropical Park. I love that we have a Cattle Show in Miami. This event showcases the agriculture aspects of our County.

The Pelican Harbor Seabird Station's annual fundraiser, Pelican Party: great event for animal protection and rehabilitation.

Honoring & Celebrating Special People

This year our community lost a great public servant and friend to many, Herta Holly. Herta was a 'memory maker'. She will be missed.

At the Swearing-In of friend and great jurist, Judge Bronwyn Miller, to the Third District Court of Appeal. It was a standing room, beyond capacity, crowd of friends and family with an incredible energy for a deserving, brilliant public servant.

Congratulations to Cynthia Johnson "CJ" Stacks on her retirement. She is incredible in all she does: personally, professionally and for the community. She served for 35 years as a County Attorney and mentor for a generation (or two) of associates.

George Kelley turned 80! Kelley Fleet is an institution at the Haulover Marina. For more than half a century, George and Alicia Kelley ran the boats, caught the fish, and brought great times to many in South Florida.

At the March 19th Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting, Captain Stan Saffan and Gray Taxidermy were recognized and thanked for the new sign at Haulover Marina. This sign is super special as it's the largest Blue Marlin ever caught that sits atop a marina sign.

Also at the March 19th Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting, we recognized three families who lost a child and turned their tragedy and sorrow into a cause that benefits the community and others who face similar hardships. I recognized the Vannis whose son Salvatore passed away before he turned 8, to cancer. They created Mystic Force to help families facing child cancer issues by raising money, increasing research and created a healthy place for kids to play. This was very emotional, but an honor to recognize these families.

At the May 8th Miami-Dade County Commission Meeting we honored and thanked Aletha Player for her 45 years with Florida Power and Light (FPL) as she retires this year. For my 31 years in elected office, Ms. Player has been the "go to" person for community needs, especially during hurricane season.

Retirement Party for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's (MDFR) Chief Dave Downey. It was a great tribute and celebration for a great guy. I loved that a bunch of past Miami-Dade Chiefs attended, as well as peers and MDFR employees. Chief Downey will be missed, but happy Chief Holmes is at the helm.

At the Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police for Miami-Dade Corrections Director Dan Junior to be sworn in as the new President of Dade Chiefs of Police.

I celebrated with Miami-Dade County Deputy Mayor Alina Hudak on her 34 years of County service and wished her the best on her new adventures. It was great to see so many people here for Alina. She's "irreplaceable" for Miami-Dade County.

Community & Government Events

Miami-Dade County is happy to have Super Bowl LIV (54). Here in Miami we started the countdown until Super Bowl LIV.

The new Costco in District 4 is now open and part of the incredible SoLe Mia development. Happy shopping to all.

Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Annual Heroes Breakfast, recognized First Responders and Emergency Doctors for exceptional Heroism. The jobs they do make them daily heroes, but yearly we celebrate their exceptional work throughout our community.

At Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's Medal Day. So special to hear stories about MDFR's men and women who were honored for their exceptional heroism. This ceremony was Chief Downey's last ceremony as he retires in May; making this event extra special.

Participated in the Joint Meeting on Legislative Priorities between the County's State Legislative Delegation and Board of County Commissioners.

Represented Miami-Dade County and residents at the National Association of Counties (NACo) Legislative Conference. Great meetings on our county issues were held. The next NACo meeting will be here in Miami-Dade County, for Large Urban Counties.

Graduation Ceremony for Miami-Dade County Department of Corrections (DOC) Boot Camp Platoon #18-4. This is an opportunity for them to move forward. A special thank you to our Judges and DOC staff who worked through challenges with these juveniles. Extra thanks to those who took on dogs to train in Second Chance. Boot Camp is about second chances.

Aventura Marketing Council's Chairman's Roundtable lunch with Florida Supreme Court Justice Robert Luck. It is always a pleasure to hear him speak.

At Bay Harbor Islands Annual Broad Family Community Picnic. I love attending this event and getting to see Anita Broad and the family, City Council, and community residents. A great turn out for this family day event.

In Washington DC for the Global Advisory Committee Roundtable. There were incredible discussions from exceptional disciplines and fields. Happy to be a member of this Federal Advisory Committee.

District 4 at the 2019 Miami Open Tennis at HardRock Stadium. It was an incredible venue transformation by Steve Ross. Happy that we got to keep pro-tennis in Miami.

Miami-Dade County had a meeting with Fabiana Rosales, wife of Venezuelan interim President Guaidó. It was a wonderful and interesting dialog and I stand committed with my colleagues to support humanitarian aid desperately needed in their pursuit for democracy.

Miami-Dade County at Dade Days in Tallahassee for the 2019 Florida Legislative Session. A good meeting with Rep. Watson and FDOT Secretary, et al. Also, our needle exchange bill passed unanimous in the Senate and through committee in House. Great couple of days.

April is Autism Awareness Month. It is not just a month of activities, but year-long effort working with this special population.

At joint meeting of Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners and Miami-Dade County Youth Commission. I am proud of my Youth Commissioners, Rita Vega and Stefanie Kopetman, for their civic engagement and activism.

The Miami-Dade Opioid Addiction Task Force, had our final meeting. It was a great effort with accomplishments by all involved disciplines. Happy the Florida Legislature did their job and passed our Needle Exchange bill. It was a successful pilot project that needs to be implemented statewide.

May is Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month and District 4 was happy to have celebrated it in North Miami Beach with Winnie Tang and many District 4 residents. They also did a nice tribute for Mother's Day.

It was a great morning to pull together Public Servants who hold political office for a great cause. Florida now has a law providing money and cancer insurance coverage for our firefighters whose work exposure increases their cancer levels higher than any other profession. Hooray and finally!

I was happy to welcome the National Center for State Courts Conference of Judges to Miami, including Florida Supreme Court Justice Lawson. Great job and kudos to Judge Scott Bernstein for bringing Judges from 32 states to South Florida.

Memorial Day was a great day in South Florida, honoring and remembering our fallen men and women who served our country in the name of freedom and democracy. I attended a park dedication for Corporal Howard Hinson and fallen war heroes in North Miami Beach.

Also, at Sunny Isles Beach's Memorial Day barbecue for Law Enforcement and municipal public servants.

I attended the Induction Ceremony for newly elected/re-elected North Miami Mayor, Council Members, and City Clerk. Congrats to Philippe Bien-Aime, Scott Galvin, Alix Desulme and Vanessa Joseph. It was a nice event with the community to witness the ceremony.

Giving Back with Community Organizations

In one day, I went from participating in my National Homeland Security Consortium meeting, working on domestic terrorism issues in Virginia to the Americans for Immigrant Justice annual event dealing with gross failings and injustices in our immigration policies. Challenging sides of complex issues and problems, with great people trying to bring forth solutions.

I had a wonderful morning at Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Thank you Beth Spiegel for bringing your HUGE stuffed animals for the children. The kids were delighted with their new toys. It was so great to be with CEO Virginia Jacko, Cameron Sisser and Teachers to share in the children's happiness.

Art Walk located at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Some of the art work was hands on, allowing people to "see" the art without sight. I purchased the "Light and Day" boat mixed mediums piece done by artist Jose Gonzalez for the office of Port Miami Director Juan Kuryla.

Served on the panel for Disrupting Marketing for Women Who Dare to Think Different Event a part of the series of The Power of the Heels. This was an event championing the power of women and I was happy to be on the panel with incredible business women.

I had a great first week of events celebrating Women's History Month with In the Company of Women Awards Dinner and Junior League of Miami Luncheon. These two events recognized Women Champions here in South Florida. I was happy to have sponsored tables for both of these events and invited extraordinary women activists to join me.

At the Reid & Fiorentino Call of the Game Dinner benefiting Lauren Kids and Dade Schools Athletic Foundation. Proud to be a sponsor of many years for these great causes. A great job to Lauren Book.

Baptist Health The Grand Gala was truly a "grand gala". WOW! The new Miami Beach Convention Center was a fantastic venue for the event.

It was another year, another anniversary for our fabulous Miami Children's Museum. I am proud of Deborah Spiegelman and her Miami Children's Museum team and always happy to celebrate with all of them.

Women of Impact XXXI was a great event by the Women's History Coalition for Women's History Month. Congratulations to all six women who were honored. I was honored in 2008 and it is still a special honor to me

I attended the Latin Builders Association (LBA) luncheon where they recognized retired Congresswoman Ileana Ros Lehtinen. Thank you to LBA for always being so gracious and welcoming to me.

Stopped by Salvatore Vanni Day in North Miami Beach to support the Vanni Family and their efforts in fighting childhood cancer through the Mystic Force Foundation. They created a great play area for kids to be kids. Always happy to support Silvia Vanni and the Mystic Force Foundation.

At Actors Playhouse at Miracle Theatre for the Reach for the Stars Gala. Well done to Barbara Stein and her team at Actors Playhouse. The gala fundraising event was a fun evening for a great community gem.

The 25th annual Greater Miami & the Beaches Hotel Association (GMBHA) Inn Key Awards. The event celebrated the "behind the scenes workers" of the hotel association here in Miami-Dade County. These workers make our hotels run and create the getaways we all love to visit. Congrats to nominees and winners.

Went to Kristi House Breaking the Silence Luncheon. I am glad to support Kristi House who helps abused children.

Legal Services of Greater Miami HeART of Giving Celebration and Judicial Reception where I was happy to be a sponsor of their 10th anniversary event. Happy to share some time with my legal friends.

Florida Foster Care Review (FFCR) Pearl Anniversary Celebration, Executive Director Candice Maze, the staff, and volunteers are super child champions. They were celebrating 30 years of service. I was happy to be there to show my support as an annual sponsor and supporter to the great things they do for our children.

The Women's Breast and Heart Initiative (WBHI) Open the Door to Your Imagination event. WBHI does a great service to the community by engaging and educating women on preventative health care.

I attended the Builders Association of South Florida (BASF) Gala and Installation. Congrats to Carolina Herrera (past president) and Jose Gonzalez (newly installed President). They are more than Builders, they are a community caring association that makes our County great.

Went to the Informed Families Dinner at Joe's, where it was my 17th year "playing" Maitre de. It was great evening of friends and community people coming together for 'claws for a cause'.

Commissioner Heyman was happy to be a sponsor once again for the North Miami Foundation for Senior Citizens' Services' Annual Meeting & Volunteer Recognition Breakfast. Without this organization and its volunteers many seniors in our community would have no one to assist them or someone to call them to check and see how they are doing. Thank you for what you do for our seniors.

At the annual fund-raiser for The ARC of South Florida. It was great seeing retired CEO Mike Messer. This is a great cause that I love to support with friends and community.

I attended the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce Gala for its the 97th Anniversary. I loved the Dr. Seuss theme. The green eggs and ham was a great Dr. Seuss reference. This great event raised money for education and community activities.
