Miami-Dade CRB discusses Derek Chauvin's Verdict and the Anti-Riot Law
|
|
At its recent meeting of April 21, the Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board discussed the verdict in the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the death of George Floyd and the potential community reaction to the new Florida anti-riot law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis on April 19. Among other things, the law increases penalties for arrests made during riots, allows people to sue local governments for injuries or property damage sustained during these incidents, and prevents local governments from reducing the budgets of law enforcement agencies.

AAAB Anti-Asian Racism, Incidents, and Hate Crimes Round Table Discussion

|
On April 27, the Miami-Dade County Asian American Advisory Board held a virtual Roundtable Discussion with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to discuss prevention and response to anti-Asian racism, biased incidents, and hate crimes. At the roundtable, community members and organizations had the opportunity to ask, address and share their perspectives and experiences with bias or hate crimes so that the community can work together to find a possible solution.

SEDC First Quarter Report

The Dr. Antonio Jorge Social and Economic Development Council (SEDC) has completed and submitted their First Quarter Report for 2021. As part of its duties, the SEDC prepares these reports on a bi-annual basis which are submitted with recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners. The quarterly report captures the most pressing social and economic issues and key elements in the South Florida regions that make Miami-Dade County a dynamic and resilient place to live, raise families and works. This report’s socio-economic indicators focus on the critical statistics that depict a slowdown and comeback generated by the Global Pandemic of COVID-19.

CFW Plants Resilience in the
Lives of Women Veterans
|
|
The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women co-hosted, with the South Dade Veteran’s Alliance and Community Health of South Florida, the “Planting Resilience in the Lives of Women Veterans” event on April 14 to raise awareness about the assault and abuse women face during and after military service. This event also brought resources to women veterans to help them overcome their trauma. Both Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Commissioner Kionne McGhee spoke during the event, along with several women veterans who shared their stories.
