District 4 Updates by the
Honorable Sally A. Heyman
Legislation

At the December 1, 2021, Board of County Commissioners’ meeting, I sponsored Resolution R-1188-21. The adopted Resolution urges the U.S. Congress to urge the National Fire Protection Association to amend its standards (1851 and 1852) to align the service life of Fire Protection clothing with technical specifications and integrity, not manufacturer dates, to determine capacity of the equipment to protect firefighters during its intended use. The item also allows surplus equipment to be donated to fire departments in USA.

Project

“Pickleball coming to Haulover Park” - Construction for Pickleball Courts at Haulover Park has begun. Located on the bayside of the park, where the tennis courts were previously located, the new courts will be free to the public and targeted to open early 2022. Pickleball courts would add another activity for residents of Miami-Dade County to enjoy at Haulover Park, which currently has a marina, dog park, skate park and pump track.

Happy Lunar New Year!
Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or Spring Festival, is just around the corner. This year Chinese New Year falls on February 1, 2022, beginning the Year of the Tiger. So, what does the tiger mean? The Chinese Zodiac dates back to the Qin Dynasty over 2000 years ago and is rooted in a system of zoolatry (or animal worship). As the legend goes, the Jade Emperor challenged all the animals in the Kingdom to a “Great Race.” Whoever arrived at his palace first would win his favor. The Tiger was sure that he had the race in the bag, but ended up placing third after the cunning Rat and workhorse Ox snuck in ahead of him. Thus, Tigers are extremely competitive people, known for their courage and ambition. Tigers are ambitious but they’re also extremely generous, with a drive to help others. Tigers want to win but are also always seeking justice.

Miami-Dade County Interfaith Advisory Board condemns the hostage incident in
Colleyville, Texas
The Miami-Dade County Interfaith Advisory Board (IAB) held its first meeting of the year on Jan. 18, 2022. The Board discussed the unfortunate hostage incident that occurred in Texas on Saturday, Jan. 15 and offers the following statement:

The Miami-Dade Interfaith Advisory Board (IAB) strongly condemns the recent hostage take-over at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. Our freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States of America is violated and rendered insecure, especially for minority and vulnerable religious groups, when hate crimes occur in the sanctity of a House of Worship. There is no freedom when our places of worship are unsafe or when fear hinders a sacred religious gathering. We must remain vigilant in protecting this sacred freedom for all, not just some citizens of our great democracy. Let us all work together to lift, love, and respect our religious differences to build a more just and loving world, restoring safety and sanctity to our sacred spaces and streets of our community.

The IAB was created by ordinance in 2020 to provide faith-based, religious, and spiritual leaders an opportunity to discuss countless matters collegially through interfaith dialogue, as well as to voice relevant concerns to the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.
