Message from Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins,
District 8
| |
| |
Greetings Miami-Dade County residents,
I am Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins, proudly representing District 8 on the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners. As your dedicated advocate, my mission is to drive positive change and enhance the quality of life for our diverse community.
In observance of Women's History Month, I am honored to pay tribute to the remarkable accomplishments of women who inspire us all. Last year marked a historic moment as our office proudly bestowed the honor of naming a street after Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a distinguished Miami native and the first Black female Supreme Court Justice. The significance of this occasion was further magnified as we welcomed Justice Jackson back to South Dade, her childhood home, where we held a momentous street naming ceremony in her honor.
This year, in collaboration with Senator Shevrin Jones and Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, we convened a Women’s History event to celebrate the remarkable contributions of influential women in our community. Among those honored was Mayor Levine Cava, our county's first female mayor, exemplifying the strength and leadership of women in shaping our vibrant community fabric.
Turning our attention to legislative priorities, our office is committed to showcasing the best of Miami's countryside. We successfully initiated Farmers Month each November, to celebrate our local agricultural community and had the participation of over 50 local businesses. Our office takes great pride in our steadfast support for signature events such as the Homestead Rodeo, a beloved fixture celebrating its 75th year. This milestone not only highlights the endurance of a treasured tradition but also underscores our dedication to preserving the rich heritage of South Dade.
Moreover, our office championed legislation to establish the Hometown Heroes Parade and Festival, a heartfelt tribute to our local heroes, including law enforcement, fire, first responders, and medical professionals. This past year we hosted the parade and festival at Tropical Park where our heroes and residents enjoyed delectable food, games, interactive activities, and even experienced "Hero Worlds," an interactive activation that offered a firsthand insight into the world of first responders. I hope to see everyone at the 3rd Annual Hometown Heroes Parade and Festival in October 2024.
As Chairwoman of the PortMiami, Resiliency, and Sustainability Committee, and Vice Chairwoman of the Transportation, Mobility, and Planning Committee, I remain resolute in addressing critical issues impacting our community. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve you and remain unwavering in my dedication to the advancement of District 8 and all Miami-Dade County.

Yours in service,
Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins
