Message from Commissioner Marleine Bastien, District 2

I am honored to serve as your Miami-Dade County Commissioner for District 2, a role I was elected to in 2022. I am especially proud to be the first woman ever elected to represent our District. Before stepping into this office, I spent more than 40 years working in social services and advocacy — standing alongside our community to fight for fairness, inclusion, dignity, and opportunity.

As Commissioner, my mission remains the same: to ensure that every resident has access to affordable housing, good-paying jobs, youth and senior services, civic education, and safe, healthy communities. Everyone deserves the chance to live, work, and thrive right here in Miami-Dade County.

As Chair of the Housing Committee, creating and protecting affordable housing and homeownership is one of my top priorities. I sponsored a resolution for a new property that will dedicate a minimum of 10% of the available units for extremely low-income households, a minimum of 15% of the available units for low-to-moderate income households, and a minimum of 25% of the units for workforce housing.

Another resolution I sponsored was for the purpose of developing affordable housing, creating a logistics center, investing in small businesses, and providing access to healthcare for seniors. This vision is being executed with the well-being of the residents and the County in mind.

This project will feature 755 housing units, including over 600 mixed-income units for residents earning from 40% to 120% of Area Median Income (AMI). This means units will be available to residents earning as little as $34,880 and up to $104,640, ensuring a broad, inclusive range of housing options that reflect the economic diversity of the community.

It will also create over 500 jobs for residents, form partnerships with local colleges and universities, revitalize public transportation in the area, and connect District 2 directly with one of the most significant economic generators in Miami-Dade County: PortMiami. District 2 has waited far too long for meaningful change, and this is a bold step toward delivering it.

Another priority close to my heart is health. I truly believe that your health is your wealth — because when you have your health, you have everything. Earlier this summer, I hosted our first Health is Wealth event, featuring boxing, yoga, massage therapy, and a healthy cooking demonstration to inspire residents to prioritize their physical, mental, and nutritional well-being. This is just the beginning of many efforts to promote healthier, happier lifestyles across our County.

My office is here to serve you. Please contact us at (305) 694-2779 or District2@miamidade.gov if we can be of assistance. For the latest updates and community news, follow me on Instagram, Facebook and X (Formerly Twitter). Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant Miami-Dade County.

Hispanic Heritage Month Roundup

The Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners recognized September 15 to October 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month when it presented the Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB) with a proclamation at the County Commission meeting of September 3. The 2025 theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is “Collective Heritage: Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” to highlight the interconnectedness of Hispanic and Latino cultures and the shared experiences that form their collective identity. HAAB is grateful for the unwavering support of the County Commissioners.

The Miami-Dade County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB) kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a vibrant celebration on September 16 that drew more than 200 people to celebrate the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic communities. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, and Commissioners Roberto Gonzalez and Natalie Milian Orbis attended the event, as did State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle, Public Defender Carlos Martinez, other local elected officials, and several members of the Consular Corps in Miami. The sounds of mariachis, tango, merengue, and salsa entertained the attendees and guests were treated to a Mexican luncheon in honor of Mexican Independence Day.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a global campaign to raise awareness for breast cancer, increase screenings, raise money for breast cancer research, and provide critical support for patients and survivors. Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week is October 17- 23. See below for information and resources:

Ghost tours at the Deering Estate

Just in time for Halloween, the historic Deering Estate, a Miami-Dade Heritage Park, is offering ghost tours where guests can step into the past and explore its history. Guides will share stories about historic events, previous inhabitants, and paranormal activities experienced by visitors and staff. Tours are $45 per person and are being held on October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 23 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The recommended age is 9 and up and equipment used to detect paranormal activity is welcomed!

Don’t forget to request a Vote-By-Mail ballot

Due to recent changes in Florida law, all requests for vote-by-mail ballots expired at the end of 2024 so any request on file with the Supervisor of Elections has expired. If you wish to continue voting by mail you must make a new request, either online or by calling 305-499-8444.
