Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee, Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz, former Commissioner Dennis Moss, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and community stakeholders celebrated the Oct. 6 opening of the Larcenia J. Bullard Plaza, a Miami-Dade County destination that will be a catalyst for new jobs and entrepreneurship.
“This small-business incubator will empower the community to innovate and create businesses, benefiting the community,” said Commissioner McGhee, who sponsored the legislation for the building’s lease agreement.

Bullard Plaza, the South Dade Black History Center Advisory Board was created to support and oversee the center. Diara Zeigler, our new Program Director, will staff the board. We welcome Diara and the board as great additions to the Office of Community Advocacy!

The Miami-Dade County Black Affairs Advisory Board partnered with several community organizations to compile a comprehensive list of the civic, professional, cultural, and business organizations that comprise the African Diaspora here in Miami-Dade County. The 2020/2022 publication is now online demonstrating the strength and viability of the Black World Community, even after the economic strain caused by COVID-19, as it placed many small-especially minority owned businesses at risk.

A specialty license plate has been approved to help protect Biscayne Bay and now Florida residents get a say in the design. Proceeds from sales of the winning design will fund conservation efforts to help save and protect Miami-Dade County’s precious bay. Voting ends November 10th. Rally for Reproductive Freedom

Members of the Commission for Women and the Commission for Women's Executive Director, along with Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, attended a rally and march in South Dade for reproductive freedom on October 2. The CFW was one of the event organizers and will be organizing another event at the start of the 2022 legislative session in Tallahassee.

On October 14, 2021, the Dr. Antonio Jorge Social and Economic Development Council (SEDC) presented their 2021 Quarterly Report at the County Infrastructure, Operations and Innovations Committee meeting to members of the Board of County Commissioners and it was approved unanimously. The quarterly report captures the most pressing social and economic issues and key elements in the South Florida regions that make Miami-Dade County a dynamic and resilient place to live, raise families, and work. This report’s socio-economic indicators focus on the critical statistics that depict a slowdown and comeback generated by the global pandemic of COVID-19.

New hours for the Miami-Dade County
Animal Shelter

The Miami-Dade Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center has new, extended hours. It’s now open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., thus giving members of the public more time to find new furry friends.
