Volunteerism is an essential part of our community in Miami-Dade County. When residents dedicate their time and skills to volunteer activities, they help address local challenges and improve the quality of life for everyone. This spirit of cooperation and unity is vital in building a stronger, more resilient community.
Engaging in volunteer work is a tangible way for residents to contribute to the well-being of their neighborhoods. By coming together to support various causes, volunteers help create a caring and supportive environment. This collective effort ensures that the needs of all community members are met, fostering a sense of solidarity and mutual respect.
The importance of volunteerism can be traced back to the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers like Aristotle, who emphasized the significance of civic engagement and the role of members of the community in contributing to the common good. Aristotle believed that true happiness and fulfillment, or "eudaimonia," are achieved through active participation in community life. By volunteering, Miami-Dade County residents embody this philosophical principle, working towards the collective well- being of our community.
In conclusion, volunteerism is a powerful expression of civic duty in Miami- Dade County. It allows residents to make a meaningful impact on their community, enhancing the well-being of all. By volunteering, individuals contribute to a brighter and more unified future for our county, continuing a proud tradition of civic engagement and community participation.

Black Affairs Advisory Board
remembers Miami icon Dr. Enid Pinkney
| | |
The Miami-Dade County Office of Community Advocacy and Black Affairs Advisory Board (BAAB) mourn the passing of Dr. Enid Pinkney, a stalwart of the Black community whose dedication to preserving Miami's Black history has left an enduring impact on us all. Her recent presence at the Black Affairs Advisory Board's June 1 meeting and the Pillar Awards ceremony on June 22 was a poignant reminder of her unwavering commitment.
Born in 1931 to Bahamian parents in Overtown, Dr. Pinkney's life was remarkable. She navigated Jim Crow with fierce resolve, inspired by her parents' teachings. Her legacy is deeply embedded in Miami's history, safeguarding landmarks like the Historic Hampton House and the Miami Circle.
As an educator and former assistant principal, Dr. Pinkney touched countless lives with wisdom and compassion. Her role as the first Black president of the Dade Heritage Trust marked a milestone in our community's history. The reopening of the Hampton House as a cultural center stands as a lasting tribute to her vision and perseverance. Dr. Pinkney's impact transcends time and place, inspiring us with her courage and dedication to justice. Rest in power, Dr. Pinkney. Your legacy will forever resonate in our hearts.
| Commission for Women holds meeting in West Miami | The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women (CFW) held its monthly meeting on July 24 in the City of West Miami as part of its ongoing efforts to bring meetings closer to county residents. The City of West Miami Vice Mayor, Natalie Milian Orbis, made welcoming remarks, and the CFW thanks the Vice Mayor for her gracious invitation to hold the meeting in West Miami. The CFW will take a break in August but will be back on September 25 with another “on the road” meeting at the YWCA in Overtown. Members of the public are always encouraged to attend and share their concerns about issues affecting women and girls. | |
Don’t forget to request a Vote-By-Mail ballot | Due to recent changes in Florida law, all requests for vote-by-mail ballots expired at the end of 2022 so any request on file with the Miami-Dade Elections Department has expired. If you wish to continue voting by mail you must make a new request, either online or by calling 305-499-8444. | |
