Are smoke detectors and installations free of charge?
Yes. FEMA has provided funds through a grant to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, to cover the cost of the smoke detector and the installation.
I meet all the requirements to receive a free smoke detector; but I do not own my home. Does this disqualify my household?
No. The homeowner would have to sign the "Homeowners Authorization" agreement, located at the bottom of the "Smoke Alarm Installation Request" form before MDFR may complete the installation.
I live in an apartment. Do I qualify for the free smoke alarm installation program?
MDFR is unable to install in apartments. Only in condos, duplexes, single family homes, townhomes and/or mobile homes.
How many smoke alarms will be installed in my home? What rooms or areas of my residence will smoke alarms be installed?
MDFR installs smoke alarms in each bedroom of the home, as well as the hallway outside the bedrooms.
What days and times will installations take place?
Smoke alarm installations take place Monday - Friday, by appointment. The weekend installation schedule may vary.
Do I need to change the batteries?
Yes, after a 10-year period. Smoke alarms installed through MDFR's Free program come equipped with a 10-year lithium battery. MDFR recommends testing the alarms monthly, then replacing them at the 10-year mark.
How do I know if my smoke alarm is working?
Press and hold the test/silence button until you hear a very loud piercing sound. If the alarm does not sound, please contact MDFR at 786-331-5216. MDFR will send a representative to check your alarm.
Do free smoke detectors installed by MDFR also detect carbon monoxide?
No. These alarms are not carbon monoxide alarms.
Are the alarms equipped with photoelectric or ionization sensors?
Yes. These alarms are dual sensor alarms that have both photoelectric and ionization sensors.
Are the alarms hard wired?
No. These alarms are not hard wired only lithium battery operated.
Is there a camera in the alarms? Are they monitored?
No. There are no cameras in the alarms, nor are they monitored in any way.
Why is my smoke alarm sounding if there is no smoke or fire?
If the alarm sounds without the presence of smoke or fire, it may be defective. Simply contact MDFR at 786-331-5216 to request for a qualified representative to inspect your device.
I have a smoke alarm in my house, how do I know I have enough?
There should be a smoke alarm in every bedroom of the home as well as the hallway outside the bedrooms.
Will MDFR replace old smoke alarms already installed in my home?
We will replace any battery operated smoke alarms. We cannot remove or replace hard wired smoke alarms.
