I have been struggling with windshields since my 1972 Honda 750 and just about every bike I’ve had since. Right now I’m working with my Triumph salesman John on the right design for the Rocket 3 GT so it will be comfortable for a long ride….like to Sturgis.
Windshields are designed to protect the rider from the wind but they have to be aerodynamic, sturdy and look good on the bike. The windshield is designed so it will work properly for different size riders, different bikes and it cannot adversely affect the bike’s handling. There are so many factors to consider what shield will work best for you. The height is a major item because where the wind hits you will greatly affect your comfort. If the wind hits you anywhere between the bottom to the top of your helmet it can cause buffeting. It is optimal to have the wind hit just below or over your helmet. The helmet’s aerodynamics also needs to be considered and can help the windshield work even better. The helmet is designed to be as aerodynamic as possible.
So you see it is very important that you research windshields carefully and, of course taking a demo ride with one installed on the bike is best.
I hope this helps because I’ve made many buying mistakes by not knowing what I was up against.
