Michael Shilale Architects

Adds Mentorship Student to Team

NEW CITY, New York – Michael Shilale Architects LLP (MSA) has announced the addition of Sean Powell to the firm’s team. Powell joins MSA having recently finished a summer long internship in 2021 through the firm’s affiliation with the Hudson Valley Pathways in Technology Early College High School (PTECH).

A four to six year program (grades 9-14), PTECH focuses on engaging students in hands-on, project based learning to be successful in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) based career fields. After completing the program, students receive a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree at no cost.

For the previous six years, MSA has been directly involved with PTECH as part of their Business Partnership Program. This program is designed to prepare students for the workplaces of today and tomorrow by involving local business that provide hands on experience such as work site visits, job shadowing, field experiences and more. Firm Principal Michael Shilale, AIA, LEED, CPHC has served as a connection and mentor to the program since MSA first joined the partnership roughly six years ago.

Recently, after having PTECH students visit the firm for a lesson in green building technology and design, Shilale was introduced to Powell when asked to serve as his Senior Project Mentor. In addition, Powell also inquired about an internship at MSA and was offered a two week opportunity to gain hands on experience working in an architectural office during summer 2021.

With no previous experience with autocad, Powell prepared for his internship by completing several free tutorials. This combined with the experience of the two week internship, Powell quickly showed himself to be a valuable addition to the firm and his internship was extended through the entire summer.

Fast forward nearly six months later and Powell continues to assist in all aspects of MSA’s practice. He has also continued to enhance his skill set by becoming proficient in GIS databases as well as Autocad in addition to learning the BIM system, Revit.
