New development planned for White Plains
On July 2nd, 2018, the White Plains Community Council approved a necessary zoning amendment to allow for the open review and municipal approval to tear down the White Plains Mall.
The plans from developer Street-Works Development would tear down the mall and replace the block with open public space and street level stores and restaurants. The retail portion would be headlined by a craft food hall, featuring smaller artisan purveyors.
White Plains Mall was built in the 1970's on a three acre block surrounded by Hamilton Avenue, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Cottage Street and Barker Avenue.
It approved the mall will be replaced with 860 apartments, 85,000 sq. ft. of retail and restaurant space, 27,000 sq. ft. of co-working and flexible office space, and 40,000 sq. ft of open space.
The apartments would be spread across four separate buildings, each with distinct features. The two tallest would consist of 14 stories.

Coffee cafes continue to invade the metropolitan area
Starbucks, Dunken Donuts, Bluestone Lane, Birch, Stump Town, Toby's Estate, Gregory's are just some of the numerous coffee cafes and shops located within the Big Apple. These companies and others must become prepared for additional competition for the arrival of Los Angeles baed "The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf", one of the world's leading roaster and retailers of specialty coffee is returning to New York City, through its new franchisee, Hudson River Coffee & Tea, which will open one hundred franchise locations across the city, beginning with Manhattan later this year.
To date, the Los Angeles based chain has 311 stores in the U.S. and more than 1,200 locations across 30 countries worldwide. New York marks the 14th state to welcome the company. The company plans to expand to 1,000 U.S. units within the next five years.
Oakland, California based coffee roaster and cafe chain Blue Bottle is expanding in Boston, Washington, D.C.. and Manhattan. In the fall of 2017, Nestle purchased a 68% stake in the company. The chain has announced six new locations set to debut across New York City. That will give the coffee favorite a grand total of 15 stores in the Big Apple.
Stores will be located at the World Trade Center Memorial, Grand Central, University Place, Midtown East, TriBeCa as well as North 4th Street in Williamsburg in the fall.
