Promise Scholarship
Michigan City's Promise Scholarship, a Mayor Ron Meer initiative, was named one of the "Best Practices in Talent Retention Strategies" by Ady Advantage, a comprehensive and integrated economic development, site selection and marketing consulting firm.

The scholarship won the award after a Midwest Talent Strategy was conducted by the Wisconsin firm, and was recognized at the Mid American Economic Council Best Practices Conference in July. 85 communities across the Midwest submitted their initiavties, 10 were interviewed, and the toop 5 were invited to the conference to receive the award.

EDCMC's New Strategic Plan
Economic Development Corporation Michigan City (EDCMC) finalized a long-term strategic economic development initiative- An Agenda for Economic Prosperity- highlighting action items towards creating a local sustainable business environment and economic prosperity and equity for all residents following the same principles of economic inclusion.

In December 2018, EDCMC announced the organization was embarking upon a process to develop a comprehensive strategic initiative. Since then, EDCMC outlined a plan of action towards a more robust and competitive marketplace in Michigan City. The strategic plan highlights workforce development/talent attraction, placemaking, aggressive storytelling and economic modernization.

EDCMC releases Opportunity Zone Prospectus
With funding from the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission, Economic Development Corporation Michigan City prepared and released Michigan City Opportunity Zone Prospectus, an investment guide that will be utilized to enable Michigan City to communicate its competitive advantages, trigger local partnerships and identify significant projects that are ready for the public, private and civic capital.

Opportunity Zones, introduced in the Tax Reform and Jobs Act of 2018, seek to encourage economic growth and investment in designated distressed communities by providing Federal income tax benefits to taxpayers who invest in business located within these zone.

Safe Harbor: Back to School
Safe Harbor is an after-school care program that provides Michigan City Area School students with high quality enrichment programming.

Through dedicated academic support, MCAS students can participate in activities like music, art, dance, SPARK Recreation, robotics, horticulture, cooking, and so much more. There are specialized Safe Harbor programs for elementary, middle and high school respectively.
