A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Dear Friends, I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and enjoying spending time with family and friends!   I would like to wish all of our Division members a Happy Second Birthday! It's hard to believe it’s been two years since our launch, but over the past two years, we have made important progress towards many goals. While there will always be challenges, I would like everyone to take the time to celebrate all of our many successes and accomplishments – some of which are highlighted in this edition of our newsletter.   As we look forward, it's important to look back and recognize those who have helped us get to where we are. One such person is Dr. Larry McMahon. As announced by Dr. John Carethers, Dr. McMahon will be stepping down as Chief of the Division of General Medicine once a successor is named. Larry was instrumental in the creation of the Division of Hospital Medicine, starting with the recruitment of Dr. Scott Flanders and the launch of the Hospitalist Program in 2003. His vision and foresight on the role of Hospital Medicine within an academic medical center – as a research, clinical, and academic hub – is a key reason for our success today. I would like to thank Larry for being a champion of Hospital Medicine and wish him the best in the next phase of his journey. You can learn more about Dr. McMahon below. On July 8, we welcomed several new faculty to our Division at our inaugural welcome lunch. It was a wonderful gathering where we were able to step away from our busy schedules and spend some time getting to know our new colleagues. Please help me in welcoming our new faculty, many of whom started this month with others to follow in August and September. You will find some information and pictures of our new members below.   As always, I hope you enjoy reading this quarter's newsletter. Our Division and faculty continue to accomplish amazing things and it’s a privilege to share but a few of these with you. LAURENCE MCMAHON JR., MD, MPH

After 31 years of outstanding leadership of the Division of General Medicine,  Larry McMahon, MD, MPH will be stepping down from his role as Division Chief upon the naming of his successor and thereafter will continue as a faculty member. Dr. McMahon was appointed as Division Chief in 1988 when the  Division of General Medicine  was relatively small with little research activity. His co-appointment as faculty in  Health Management & Policy  in the School of Public Health proved salient to a blueprint he created to forge health services research in his Division.  Learn more about Dr. McMahon and his accomplishments .

NEW STAFF

Please welcome Laura Gerker, MPH , the new Business Manager for the Division of Hospital Medicine, who joined our team on July 1. In this role, Laura is responsible for supervising our administrative staff and serving as the liaison between the Division and Faculty Affairs and also as the faculty recruitment coordinator. She earned her Master of Public Health degree in Health Behavior/Promotion at the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University. Before coming to our Division, Laura was an Office Manager at the U-M College of Literature, Science & the Arts in the Division of Student Academic Affairs.

NEW LEADERSHIP ROLES

Ashwin Gupta, MD has accepted the Section Chief of Hospital Medicine position at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System . Dr. Gupta is a career hospitalist who has been with the Division since completing his residency and internship at Michigan. He has spent much of his clinical effort at the VA where he has been recognized for his exemplary leadership and selfless nature.

Jessie King, MD, PhD has been selected to serve as the Ambulatory Care Clinical Chief of the Ambulatory Diagnostic and Treatment Units (ADTUs). Having this leadership position fall under the Division of Hospital Medicine will allow for a clear line of sight across the Medical Short Stay Unit , Medicine Faculty Hospitalist Service , and now outpatient settings, providing the Division with the opportunity to best influence patient care and movement.

Ruby Marr, MD has been selected to serve as the Assistant Director of the 10 East Medicine Unit at St. Joe's (MSJ) . In this role, Dr. Marr will assist Dr. Khateeb in the day-to-day operations of MSJ including service management, process improvement, orientation, and onboarding of faculty. She will also assist with faculty evaluations and providing director-on-call coverage for MSJ.

Satyen Nichani, MD has been named the Medical Director of the new Master of Science Physician Assistant (MSPA) Program slated to launch at UM-Flint in June 2020. It is the first physician assistant program offered at U-M. Dr. Nichani will be responsible for coordinating the needs of PA students, developing curriculum within medical specialties including sites and rotational competencies, and overseeing core GME aspects of the program.

Growth & Innovation

10 East Medicine Unit at St. Joe's In September 2018, a unique collaboration with Saint Joseph Mercy Health System was launched to improve patient access to Michigan Medicine:  10 East Medicine Unit at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor (SJMAA) . Non-surgical patients who don't require a specialty service can now be admitted to the 10th floor at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, allowing Michigan Medicine to care for more patients and free up room in the emergency department. The unit is staffed 24/7 by Michigan Medicine physicians, with Rafina Khateeb, MD, MBA serving as the medical director. The unit reached full capacity, 26 beds, within four months of launching. Dr. Khateeb (who was recognized as a 2018 Top Hospitalist by the ACP) discusses the Michigan St. Joe's service, early results, challenges, and next steps with ACP Hospitalist .

EDUCATION & TRAINING

Rethinking Vascular Access: The Case for (and Against) Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters Vineet Chopra, MD, MSc discusses the pros and cons of peripherally inserted central catheters and the ideal situations to use them at the Michigan Medicine Department of Internal Medicine Grand Rounds. Watch video .

Direct Observations of Clinical Teaching On Rounds (DOCTOR) Program The DOCTOR Program is a peer-observation program that launched at both the VA Ann Arbor Hospital and the Michigan Newburgh Service in June 2018. While in the program, hospitalists observe one another on rounds and give each other feedback about observed strengths and opportunities for improvement. The goal of the program is to improve the teaching skills of inpatient attending physicians. Since its inception, 20 MFH hospitalists have participated. The preliminary data gathered suggests that the program led to perceived improvements in teaching effectiveness, interpersonal communication skills with resident, and time management. In addition,  3 of 4 participants would recommend the program to others 87% said they would make at least one change to their rounds Learn more .

JetPack Clinical Scholarship Program The JetPack Clinical Scholarship Program , created by the Division in 2017 and directed by David Wesorick, MD , provides peer-to-peer mentoring within a resource rich environment to help mentees succeed, typically junior faculty with little experience in conducting or writing a research/QI project. It is designed to help hospital medicine faculty pursue academic work that will lead to the publication of a peer-reviewed paper. Our Division partners with the  Annals of Internal Medicine  to create a special feature called “ Annals for Hospitalists (AFH) .” AFH highlights hospitalist-relevant content from Annals, and brings perspectives from leaders in the field to clinicians, policy-makers, and researchers to everyday hospitalists. Vineet Chopra, MD, MSc was one of nine faculty across the University campus honored with the Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award . The award was established in 2012 to recognize faculty who foster the intellectual, creative, scholarly, and professional growth of their students, fellows, and trainees in the areas of clinical and translational health and research. Gold Humanism Honor Society

Michael Lukela, MD has been chosen as one of four University of Michigan faculty members to be inducted into the Michigan Medicine Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society , with the ceremony taking place on January 22, 2020. Dr. Lukela's nominees described him as a "kind and admired physician and clinical teacher" and a "faculty member who practices patient-centered care by modeling the qualities of integrity, excellence, compassion, altruism, respect, and empathy". Congratulations to Dr. Lukela!

David Paje, MD finds that the use of peripherally inserted central catheters is common in hospitalized patients with chronic kidney disease despite guidelines recommending otherwise.
