MICHIGAN MEDICINE
Division of Hospital Medicine
A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF
Dear Friends,

I am excited to introduce the first edition of the Michigan Medicine Division of Hospital Medicine newsletter. We hope it will keep you informed of our latest initiatives in patient care, education, and research within our Division.

Since the establishment of the Hospital Medicine Program in 2002, our Division has grown to approximately 130 faculty and staff, providing care for more than three quarters of all hospitalized medical patients at Michigan Medicine and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. In July 2017, the Division of Hospital Medicine was officially formed with the following mission:

  • Provide the highest quality and most compassionate patient-centered care.
  • Advance medical knowledge and find innovative ways to create value.
  • Commit to the ongoing education of ourselves and others.
  • Advocate for our patients and their families.
  • Support a work environment where each person is valued, respected, and has an opportunity for personal and professional growth.

I am pleased to announce that Scott Flanders, MD has begun his new role as Chief Clinical Strategy Officer for Strategic Planning and Business Development. In this role, he represents the medical group and health system, and partners with the Chief Strategy Officer to develop and execute clinical affiliations with other organizations. This work will continue to support the full implementation of Michigan Medicine's clinical network strategy. We are delighted that Scott sits in this important role for the health system and the Division.

The annual Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) National Meeting took place March 24-27. We had one of our strongest showings this year, with over 25 posters, presentations, and workshops. Several research posters came from junior faculty who participated in our JetPack Clinical Scholarship Program and represented their first ever research submission to SHM!

Our division looks forward to this conference every year as it's a time to learn about the latest research and best practices from other institutions, showcase what our faculty have been working on each year, and connect with fellow hospital medicine health care providers. View our posters, presentations, and workshops .
We hope you will share your comments and suggestions with us at umhospitalmedicine@umich.edu . We would love to hear from you. And please visit our website  to learn more about our expansive patient care, research, and educational programs.

Go Blue!

Sincerely,

Chief, Division of Hospital Medicine

INAUGURAL NATIONAL HOSPITALIST DAY
The first National Hospitalist Day , initiated by the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) , took place on March 7. The day was instituted to honor hospital medicine care teams and to celebrate their contributions to patient care, education, and research. The Division of Hospital Medicine at Michigan Medicine joined SHM in the celebration. Read " All Inpatients, All the Time: Hospital Medicine Grows as a Specialty ", which includes quotes from some of our hospitalists, and watch a video saluting our physicians and advanced-practice clinicians who specialize in hospital medicine. Our video entry was recognized by SHM as the best in the nation among the many entries submitted to the organization!

National Hospitalist Day will occur annually, the first Thursday in March.

Save the Date: March 5, 2020!
