Division of Hospital Medicine

Dear Friends,
I am excited to introduce the first edition of the Michigan Medicine Division of Hospital Medicine newsletter. We hope it will keep you informed of our latest initiatives in patient care, education, and research within our Division.
Since the establishment of the Hospital Medicine Program in 2002, our Division has grown to approximately 130 faculty and staff, providing care for more than three quarters of all hospitalized medical patients at Michigan Medicine and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. In July 2017, the
Division of Hospital Medicine
was officially formed with the following mission:
- Provide the highest quality and most compassionate patient-centered care.
- Advance medical knowledge and find innovative ways to create value.
- Commit to the ongoing education of ourselves and others.
- Advocate for our patients and their families.
- Support a work environment where each person is valued, respected, and has an opportunity for personal and professional growth.
I am pleased to announce that
Scott Flanders, MD
has begun his new role as Chief Clinical Strategy Officer for Strategic Planning and Business Development. In this role, he represents the medical group and health system, and partners with the Chief Strategy Officer to develop and execute clinical affiliations with other organizations. This work will continue to support the full implementation of Michigan Medicine's clinical network strategy. We are delighted that Scott sits in this important role for the health system and the Division.
Our division looks forward to this conference every year as it's a time to learn about the latest research and best practices from other institutions, showcase what our faculty have been working on each year, and connect with fellow hospital medicine health care providers.

Additionally, members of the Division also staff a number of service lines that have unique characteristics and patient focus areas such as renal transplant and hematologic malignancies.

JetPack Clinical Scholarship Program
In 2017, the Division of Hospital Medicine launched the JetPack Clinical Scholarship Program, aimed specifically at clinicians interested in quality improvement or operational efforts.
JetPack provides peer-to-peer mentoring within a resource rich environment to help mentees succeed, typically junior faculty, with little experience in conducting or writing a research/QI project. It is designed to help Hospital Medicine faculty pursue academic work that will lead to the publication of a peer-reviewed paper.

Robert Chang, MD
received a commendation letter from the institution’s Chief Medical Information Officer for his role in streamlining order sets and physician order entry within MiChart. Leading a multidisciplinary committee to develop, approve, and implement a number of solutions, he showed significant creativity and flexibility, and a deep detailed technical expertise in informatics, as well as a profound appreciation for clinical workflow.
During the Joint Commission survey in late March 2019, zero citations were found related to order sets, which is a direct reflection of Dr. Chang’s outstanding service and commitment to improving the delivery of clinical care.
