MISI GC Report 12 June 2026

Congratulations to Katie Purcell (dROP) and Holly Morren (MLA) on their acceptance into USA Swimming’s 2026 Women Swim Coaches in Governance program. The goal of the program is to prepare coaches to have a greater role in LSC governance. It runs for two months (September and October), with weekly meetings and one full in-person weekend meeting, sponsored by the LSC. If this is an area of interest for MISI female coaches that do not have experience in governance and are looking to develop their skills, please contact Michigan Swimming and we’ll prepare for next year’s program!

Time standards have been published for this summer’s championship meets. Our Championship Meet Committee plans to publish the 2027 Short Course Qualifying Times on or before September 1, 2026.

The 2026 Central Zone Open Water Championships were held today in Pleasant Prairie, WI. Team Michigan was represented by 17 athletes, ages 10-18. A clinic was held Thursday night in preparation for Friday races. The weather last night included tornado warnings, but today’s race day weather was excellent: clear skies, water temp about 75 degrees, and a fine racing course. Congratulations to our Team Michigan athletes, and special thanks to Coaches Josh Morgan, Alise James, and Dan Ohm from PCC for leading the team. Unofficial results show that Team Michigan had great races. Official results will be reported in the next newsletter.

Next weekend, Team Michigan will send eleven athletes to the 2026 Central Zone Multi-Cultural Meet. Jamal Roberts (RZR) will lead Team Michigan at this biannual event celebrating multicultural diversity in competitive swimming. The meet is hosted by Badger Aquatic Club at the University of Wisconsin’s Soderholm Family Aquatics Center and is conducted in LCM. Also, next weekend, both of our outdoor LCM meets will be run, rain or shine, one east and one west. DRD will host the Freeze or Fry Invitational in Dearborn, and GKC hosts the Summer Solstice Invitational in Kalamazoo. Both meets are at capacity, and we look forward to the fun and challenge of racing in outdoor pools!

DEI Grant Fund applications for this year closed May 31. Awards will be determined and announced in two weeks. The goal of these grants is to support teams working with under-represented populations in Michigan. Michigan Swimming is dedicated to “Integrity, Inclusion, Education, and Excellence.” We are committed to excellence in education (learn to swim, learn to swim better, learn to swim faster), inclusion (everyone swims, everyone wins), and integrity (think global, swim local).

MISI Camps & Clinics committee members are finalizing plans for the Michigan Select Camp, August 22-23, at University of Michigan. This camp is focused on Michigan Swimming athletes training and competing at the elite level in USA Swimming (Winter Junior qualifiers and above). Attendance will be limited to the top 24-32 applicants. Athletes and coaches will be invited based on athlete’s performance level. Invitations will go out in early July. If you fit in this category, keep that weekend open for a great Team Michigan experience! This committee is also working on an 11-14 year-old Select Camp for April, 2027. Selection for this camp will be based on IMX scores.

Stay tuned for details and best regards,

Best regards, Vince Gallant

Athlete Summit

We are all so excited to be apart of this year’s Central Zone/Western Zone Athlete Summit hosted at WashU! We are expecting to be able to grow as leaders and bring back everything we learn to our LSC and implement it in any way we can. We’ve been able to meet so many new people, but throughout the weekend, we will have the opportunity to learn about other LSCs and different team cultures.

Nicole McEnroe, Mia Melhem, Louisa McCartney, Meredith Sperling and Poppy LaCrosse.

2026 Graduates: Where Are They Going and What Are They Going To Do?

Over the next month, some of our teammates will be graduating from high school. We wish everyone success on their next chapters, and we are asking teams to send in a photo of your graduating seniors with a short note about their future plans. We’ll share each team’s photos and notes in this bi-weekly newsletter.
