DID YOU KNOW that while lutein/zeaxanthin (LZ) is known for its positive effect on your eyes, the last few years have also shown much broader effects, such as headache reduction and cancer prevention? We now know why this is.

Researchers in a Frontiers in Nutrition study found that LZ attenuates multi-level biological aging through telomere regulation and inflammation suppression.

A large eight year human study suggests that higher intake of LZ was associated with a slower biological aging rate, observed in major organs such as the liver and kidneys, as well as the cardiovascular system.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. A recent analysis of methyl vitamin B12 supplements sold on Amazon found only 56% met label claim. A man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. Know your supplier!

Microbes Influence Our Behavior

Steve: An incredible new study from journal Nature suggests that our brain often takes behavioral cues from the bacteria that exists in our gastrointestinal tract. In this study, the crosstalk was specifically between the brain and colon.

In a breakthrough that reimagines the way the gut and brain communicate, researchers uncovered what they call a “neurobiotic sense,” a newly identified system that lets the brain respond in real time to signals from microbes living in our gut.

What's fascinating is that this study centers on neuropods, tiny sensor cells lining the colon’s epithelium. These cells detect a common microbial protein and send rapid messages to the brain that help curb appetite.

Researchers think this is just the beginning. The neuropods may be influencing everything from eating habits to mood - and even how the brain might shape the microbiome in return.

How are these messages are transmitted? The vagus nerve, THE major line of communication between the gut and the brain. If the vagus nerve is sluggish or overstimulated, it could dampen the messaging.

As each year goes by, we see how most everything health-wise begins and ends with the gut-brain connection. The vagus nerve plays a critical role.
