Welcome February!
Dear Wonderful Families,

It’s been an exciting few weeks for our NorthStars! Coming off the heels of two basketball championships and our MathCounts regional 1st place finish, we just learned that twelve of our Middle School students qualified for the Regional History Bee in March and one of our robotics teams has earned a spot in a World Championship in April! We couldn’t be more proud of our well-rounded students and the dedicated professionals who inspire them to reach new heights!

As we head into the final week of February, we wish those traveling for school vacation a safe and rejuvenating time! Here at World Academy we are gearing up for a fun-filled vacation week program with specially planned activities for our February Fitness Fun theme! Activities will include sporty games, mindfulness, yoga, healthy cooking lessons and tracking steps across the USA, to name a few! What a great way for students to spend their vacation week- having fun while learning how to build a healthy mind and body!

Warm regards,
Kathy and Lisa for all of us

This annual event bridges the ages of our NorthStar community and brings all together for laughter and fun! Following the game there will be a reception for all World Academy Alumni! Box Tops for World Academy
Help the PTO raise money for their fun programs and activities for our whole school community by scanning OR clipping those Box Tops! Every Top scanned or clipped is worth $ .10 and that adds up fast. If you need to download the Box Tops app to your phone, you can learn more and do that by clicking here,

Even though the Box Tops program has changed, you can still collect Tops in a clear plastic bag (be sure the Tops are not expired) and write your child’s name, grade, and teacher’s name on the bag. One submission per family is fine—just include all students’ info. Bring the Tops into school and drop them in a Box Tops collection box found near the Front Desk, in the Elementary hallway or in the Middle School entry area.

For more information, please contact Karen Bradshaw at [email protected]. Thank you, in advance, for your participation!
Raising Children to be Happy Adults
Click here to read a great article from the Boston Globe by Richard Weissbourd, a senior lecturer and co-director of the Human Development and Psychology Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. This article is a great reflection on why we should teach our children how to care about other people to help them grow into happy adults.

Madame Bronfine's Fourth and Fifth Grade French students have worked hard on their plays and dances! Click the links below to enjoy videos of their wonderful performances!!
Check out the amazing growth of the plants in our hydroponics garden one week after Mrs. St. Lawrence’s science students added nutrients to the water! The students pruned, fed, watered and tasted their lettuce plants! Yum!
Mrs. Guidoboni's First Graders enjoyed a day with their favorite stuffies! The students' furry friends spent the day being First Graders, including saying the Pledge of Allegiance!
Our Third Graders were totally engaged in Robotics with Mr. Hughes this week! Students were busy developing 21st century skills while communicating, collaborating, thinking critically and creatively designing to solve engineering challenges!
Mrs. Ramapriya's Fifth Grade Social Studies classes have been learning about Colonial America and researching different jobs and occupations from that time period. Students have been learning how colonialists relied on their communities for support and solving any neighborly issues they might experience. Students were given a group project to complete, first researching jobs and roles they'd have in the colony, such as an Apothecary, Millner, Printer, Cooper, etc. and then they presented an issue they'd like the "Town Meeting" to review and vote on. All students did a great job, these four even dressed up!
Even an Eighth Grader can get into being seaweed during Rainbow Ball Tag! What a wonderful way for one of our Student Ambassadors to spend time with younger students!
Our February Recognition and Awards Assembly was jam-packed with impressive NorthStar accomplishments!! We were so proud to recognize our wonderful student achievements over the past month, including our TWO Championship Basketball Teams, our MathCounts Regional Championship Team, our stellar Robotics Teams, our Rube Goldberg and Invention Convention winners, and our Pilot Cubing Team's accomplishments! We also recognized our Elementary students for Caring and Compassion; our NorthStar Award winners, Eddie Zhan and Hrushikesh Sankar, and were treated to a beautiful performance from Mrs. Tucker's First Grade! On Thursday our Future Kindergarten through Fourth Graders participated in “Step Up Day”. Students spent the morning connecting with teachers and students, asking questions, hearing about special projects and events, and getting a taste of what their future educational opportunities and experiences will be like at World Academy.
Here are some pictures of the Third Graders who stepped up to Fourth Grade! The students completed a STEM challenge in which they had to make a paper chain in approximately 15 minutes using the supplies provided to them.
World Academy Celebrates Presidents' Day!
Kindergarten
Mrs. Tully’s Kindergarten class has been learning about money. They have been studying coins for recognition and value and had fun playing “Heads & Tails” game and singing the “Money Chant”. The class watched non-fiction videos about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and their lives as children. The students compared and contrasted how life is the same and different from then. They also completed a piece of writing, “If we were President of the United States.”
Mrs. Spaulding’s students have been learning about presidents while simultaneously learning about money. Students have spent the month of February learning about the value of coins and the president that is represented on each. They learned about why the holiday of Presidents’ Day is celebrated and the important job a president holds. Through easy readers, stories and videos, students have learned the big shoes a president must fill. Students wrote about what they would do if they were president.
Mrs. Seguin’s students have been busy learning about money and presidents as well. Throughout the month of February, they have learned about different coins, the presidents on them and the value of each coin. With the use of a variety of stories, non-fiction videos, and discussions students learned about the important job a president has and the reason Presidents’ Day is celebrated.
First Grade
All First Graders learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln by listening to stories about their lives. These pieces of literature brought up some discussions regarding the two gentlemen. The stories were followed by watching an informational and age-appropriate non-fiction video, completing a booklet all about Presidents’ Day and making Presidential paper plate hats. The students were able to use their creativity in building their hats. The two First Grade classes collaborated together for these activities!
Second Grade
The Second Graders pulled a president out of a hat and practiced their researching skills. Each student used reference books to find specific information. The class used their critical thinking and synthesizing skills to learn from their research and created a brochure with the knowledge they found. Please come by and check out the informative brochures hanging outside the Second Grade classrooms!
Third Grade
Mrs. Novak’s class researched various presidents and used their newly learned knowledge to complete some project-based learning. Each student published an educational poster that represents one of our country’s presidents.
Miss Hill’s class watched an informational video on why we celebrate Presidents’ Day. They also read the article in Parenting NH Magazine on the NH Kid Governor program, and the Third Grade students wrote summaries about the article to pull out the important facts. Then the class reflected on what it takes to be a leader, what a platform is, and how one person can make a change. The class discussed the character traits needed to be a successful leader.
Fourth Grade
Who was a better president: George or Abe? The Fourth Graders read various informational texts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They then analyzed, discussed the information that they learned with their fellow classmates, and then used this information to formulate an opinion piece of writing to persuade their audience.
Fifth Grade / Sixth Grade
In Fifth and Sixth Grades, using famous quotes by all of our presidents, past and present, students reflected on how they could use these words as growth mindset opportunities and inspiration. Students were each given a pennant with both a quote and a portrait of the president who said the quote. Each was then asked to reflect on and write about what the quote means and how they could use those words to inspire themselves and others around them. The pennants were then cut out and strung together to create a banner that will be hung around the room. These pennants will be a great reminder for the students and teachers every day.
Seventh Grade
Students studied the unique election system of the United States and how it is possible to gain the most individual votes but lose the overall election due to the Electoral College. Students studied the results of the 1888 and 2000 elections and how they compared and contrasted.
Eighth Grade
Students learned about George Washington, how he was elected and became the “Father of our Country”.
Have a great weekend!
