For the  parents and families of St. Therese Chinese Catholic School

Dear Parents,

It is one of my most favorite times of year! We are entering Catholic Schools Week starting this Sunday, January 28 and running through February 3rd! We will have a fun week of building community through a variety of activities including: Spelling & Geography Bees, Mass, Handwriting Contest, Science Fair, Catholic Bowl, Curriculum Fair and our exciting Scholastic Book Fair! I hope to see many parents this at the school during this wonderful week.

As you may know, 2018 represents an exciting time in terms of parent choice in education. Tax credit scholarships offer opportunities we have never seen before for parents to receive financial assistance though the state for non-public school options. We had 73 families apply for the Big Shoulders Fund opportunity on January 22nd! Since funding needs are likely to surpass available funding, we encourage all those families (and others) to ALSO apply to Empower Illinois , which will open their portal on January 31st at noon.

Additionally, in the upcoming months, you will be hearing from me about an Archdiocesan initiative called Renew My Church. Renew My Church is the Archdiocese of Chicago's response to His call and our invitation for renewal. Called by Jesus Christ, we are making disciples, building communities and inspiring witness. We will join seven other parish communities in the Bridgeport and Canaryville area over the next 3 to 4 months to review our gifts and agree upon a direction for the churches in our immediate neighborhoods. Father Li and I will be sharing what we hear and there will be opportunities to participate in parish discussions on February 18th and March 11th after 10:30am mass in the church's Community Room.

Renew My Church supports vibrant parishes and schools that cultivate bonds with each other and provoke active participation in His Church. Renew My Church asks us to come together in solidarity and spread the light and hope of Jesus Christ in order to transform the world.

Finally, I wanted to share the exciting news that St. Therese is now officially a 2018 Blue Ribbon Finalist as recommended by CAPE (the Council for American Private Education)! This a major step toward a potential 2018 National Blue Ribbon recognition. Making it to this point in the process is truly a tribute to the dedication and hard work of the entire St. Therese Community - our teachers, staff, parents and, most of all, our students. Congratulations to all!

Blessings,
Ms. Cavallone
Principal

Junior Basketball Starts Strong!

The Junior Basketball Team is off to a great start in the BCA Youth Basketball League with a 6-1 record. These 3rd and 4th graders are coached by Michael Eng, Rocky Caponigri, and Norman Moy.
In addition to their success as a team, some Junior players represented STCCS at the BCA All Star Day. St. Therese was chosen to coach the West All Stars team based on their record thus far and overall team attitude.  All Stars Tyler Mark (4th) and Brady Eng (4th) played w ell in the All Star Game but unfortunately lost by one point. Gabriel Moy (4th) placed 2nd in the skills challenge after a tie in the championship round.
Good luck to our Junior players for a successful rest of the season!
Students Help Chicagoans Stay Warm This Winter

St. Therese students put their artistic and organizational skills to good use last week when they teamed up with Tiesta Tea and Jewel Osco for their Spread the Warmth Event on January 19th. Supporting a charity called Bundle Up Chicago, the students made over 70 scarves and sorted donations of hats, gloves, coats and socks for needy Chicagoans.

Our students walk in the path of Jesus through their gracious service. #WeAreOneBody

We encourage our families to join St. Therese in using the hashtag #WeAreOneBody on social media to show all of the many ways we walk in the path of Jesus and act in God's image.
St. Therese Signs Three Sister Schools from China

Junior High Teacher Kelli Kielusiak traveled to China in December to represent St. Therese School at an international conference in Beijing. Following the conference, Ms. Kielusiak travelled with other teachers from the US and elsewhere to meet with representatives of several Chinese schools in the Shandong Province. There was great appreciation for St. Therese's mission, programs and accomplishments from both fellow conference attendees as well as our host schools in China.

As a result of these visits, we are pleased to welcome  Yucai Middle School and  Beixin Middle School in the city of Tengzhou, and  Dongying Experimental Middle School in Dongying City as Sister Schools!  The purpose of these partnerships is to share educational, cultural, and  extracurricular best practices. We are looking forward to a robust and beneficial exchange of ideas and programs.

Our new Sister School
Dongying Experimental Middle School has
7,346 students and is the largest school on the Yellow River Delta.
Students Explore, Learn and Have Fun Beyond the School Walls

Our Early Childhood students, teachers and parent chaperones enjoyed a day of learning, discovery and hands-on play at the Chicago Children's Museum!

Our 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders were entertained watching the play Junie B. Jones Is Not a Crook at the Merle Reskin/DePaul Theatre this month.

Chinese New Year Benefit
Saturday, March 3rd 5:30-10:30pm

You are cordially invited to the Annual St. Therese School Chinese New Year Benefit on Saturday, March 3, 2018 celebrating the Year of the Dog at Furama Restaurant at 2828 S Wentworth Ave. from 5:30pm - 10:30pm.

Our annual celebration of the Chinese New Year is always a special evening - the chance to enjoy the company of family and friends, be entertained by our talented students, and enjoy a delicious traditional meal. We are already working hard to create another exciting evening for you.

The Chinese New Year Benefit is also the chance to support St. Therese! This is our largest fundraiser and all proceeds help keep tuition as low as possible and also support projects that will continue to improve our school. This year, our popular Faculty Follies will be raising money to upgrade our outdoor space with a more child-friendly play surface.

We ask each family to support this event and get involved in one or more ways:
  • Sponsor the event or ask friends, colleagues, and businesses you know to sponsor the event. Event sponsorships are available at several levels and include many attractive benefits.
  • Advertise in the Program Book, which will be viewed by all attendees at the event, and is a great way to advertise a business, congratulate a graduating class, and cheer on a school team or club.
  • Purchase Tickets to the event. Adult tickets are $110 and child tickets are $60.
  • Donate to the Silent Auction. We also encourage you to ask businesses you frequent to donate an item or service to our very popular Silent Auction. Unique experiences are especially popular!
  • Purchase and sell Raffle Tickets. Tickets are $5 and each family is responsible for at least 10 tickets.
  • Donate to the event through a direct gift or during the Faculty Follies portion of the event.
  • Volunteer! It takes many hands to pull off this event - let us know your interest and availability, and we will find a job for you.
Raffle tickets, and the forms for sponsorship, advertising, ticket ordering and silent auction donations can be found on our website under the Support/Chinese New Year Benefit tab.

Thank you for your continued support of St. Therese and CNY. Please do not hesitate to contact SFA Co-Presidents Anita Mark or Elisa Moy with any questions you may have. We look forward to celebrating with you on March 3rd!
