Mid-January Updates
Dear Wonderful Families,

On this special weekend honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we would ask us all to try to keep his dream, that all people can live together in peace, alive. It has been an ongoing struggle to keep this in the foreground and unconscionable that in today’s world there is still not equality and justice for all. As we work to support equity, I would like to support the mantra “Let it begin with us!” As we endeavor to model this for our children, it is our hope that they will be closer to making that dream become a reality in their lifetimes. That is a goal worth working toward! Thank you for making a difference in our “World!”

Warmly,
Kathy and Lisa for all of us
President and Head of School
Periodically we send out surveys to find out how you think we are doing. Although we hear from many of you consistently, we want to hear from you all, if possible. Thank you for taking a few minutes to help us be the best we can be for your students. Your feedback is an important component of our self-assessment for growth and quality.
Thank you to donor,
Rob & Elaine Desrochers , who made a donation in honor of alumna, Tara , and current Eighth Grader, Brooke !
Join us by giving  40 for World Academy’s 40th Anniversary! This year,  the World Academy Alumni Association is celebrating the 40th year anniversary of the founding of World Academy by participating in a donation drive! Since 1980, the school has educated and nurtured over 20,000 students, and we would like to honor that accomplishment by paying tribute to the students, teachers, alumni and special memories from our “World!”

We are aiming to celebrate this incredible 40-year legacy by attaining 40 gifts in honor of the 40 years of excellence.  Please consider donating a gift of any amount to the WA Alumni Association . All gifts designated to the  “40 for 40” will go directly to the WA Alumni Association’s Scholarship Fund to support a quality World Academy education to even more deserving students. Please consider this tax-deductible donation in honor of your wise investment in your child’s education as it will allow us to offer more quality, deserving students a chance to have a positive impact on your child’s “World!”.

Gifts can be donations of any denomination given in honor of a special current student, alumni, special teacher and/or special memory. If your company will match your donation, you will be doubling the good your gift will bring! We are grateful to announce that some of the companies that have shared our ‘World’ over the years have also offered to match individual donations as well. Please see the different levels of donations below and let us know how we can support your matching funds.

All  “40 for 40”  donors and honorees, unless designation of anonymous is preferred, will receive personal recognition in our special edition of  Coordinates that will highlight this banner year at World Academy. We thank you so much for the opportunity to celebrate our World Academy’s 40th Anniversary in this impactful way and to share our pride in the joy of what happens in our “World” every day!

Warmly,
The World Academy Alumni Association
in cooperation with the Administrative Leadership Team of World Academy

World Academy Celebrates MLK Jr. Day
Special thank you to WA Parent, Mr. Charles Okorie, who presented to our Grades 6-8 students. Mr. Okorie shared his story of how he turned his dream of making a difference into an organization called “The Thank You Project.” This foundation was started by a group of Nashua citizens (including Mr. Okorie) and works to bring access to clean drinking water to families in rural areas of Nigeria, as well as to provide scholarships for students in those areas to attend university. He shared pictures of his recent trip to Ututu and Achi Nigeria and showed the students how his organization helped build a water borehole. He encouraged students to use their gifts and talents to help others who are less fortunate and in the footsteps of Dr. King to follow their dreams to make the world a better place.
Mrs. Hulfachor, our School Counselor, visited Grades K through 3 and invited students to reflect on Martin Luther King’s message of inclusion, acceptance and peace through different activities. Kindergarten and Grade 1 students read the book “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox, and made connections with Martin Luther King’s message of tolerance and inclusion. Second Grade students worked in groups on a collaborative puzzle where they had the opportunity to brainstorm ideas on how to work together as a classroom community in a positive, inclusive and kind manner. Our Third Graders reflected on and engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the meaning behind several of Martin Luther King’s most inspirational quotes and how they could apply his message in their classroom community.
Each Middle School class reflected on Martin Luther King Jr.’s powerful message of equality and human potential through some of his most inspirational quotes. Through this activity, they had the opportunity to collaborate and engage in discussions and to compose a paragraph about the meaning of each quote. In addition, Middle School students collaborated on a “I have a dream” wall poster that included students’ words and phrases inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s famous speech of August 28, 1963, in which he called for civil and economic rights and an end to racism in the United States.
Mrs. Hulfachor led a presentation with a video produced by the School Community and Leadership (Kindness) Club where several Middle School students reflected on “how can we keep Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream alive.”  She then invited all students to continue Dr. Martin Luther King’s message to create a better world. Click here for the wonderful video!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten students were introduced to Martin Luther King Jr. by reading stories and discussing why MLK Day is celebrated. Students engaged in a discussion about the importance of treating others with respect and how to fulfill MLK’s dreams of everyone being friends. This included learning new vocabulary words such as equality and peace. Students wrapped up the day by writing about how they can be a friend and shared their ideas with the class.
First Grade
Mrs. Guidoboni’s First Grade class listened to a MLK story by David Adler and had a class discussion about how to solve problems peacefully. The students created doves to symbolize peace and wrote thank you letters to Dr. King.

Mrs. Tucker’s First Graders enjoyed reading books on peace, kindness, and Dr. King. They also watched a video to help with a class discussion about Dr. King’s impact on others and how it may not be easy but it's important to stand up for what you believe in. Students worked collaboratively to complete Scholastic News centered around Dr. King and then individually completed a writing piece. The class created a beautiful posters to show what they learned.
Second Grade
They did it! The Second Graders escaped the room by solving different questions about Martin Luther King Jr. and his life. They also learned more about Martin Luther King Jr. by reading the Scholastic News: Dr. King Believed.
Third Grade
Mrs. Novak’s and Miss Hill’s Third Grade classes read Dream March and worked together to find positive words that represent what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other activists have tried to teach others through their work. Each student wrote a word on a red, white, or blue hand, and connected them together forming a peace sign, symbolizing unity. The students also read a play about the life of Dr. King.
Fourth Grade
The Fourth Graders read informational articles and watched some video clips about Dr. King (especially those related to his famous speech). After watching, students brainstormed some of the words that stood out to them and that were important to Martin. We also read Martin’s Big Words” and discussed how one person can and does make a difference in the world-adding more words to the classroom's brainstorm list. After discussing Dr. King’s use of imagery in his speeches, students created original poetic phrases about freedom and illustrated them.
Fifth & Sixth Grade
Ms. Bishop’s Fifth and Sixth Graders read portions of the book If You Lived at the Time of Martin Luther King and then discussed how he demonstrated the word “leader” in his daily life. Students were then introduced to the "Leader in Me" project. This is a curriculum based upon The Seven Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey. Students each developed a mission statement focusing on how they can become a leader in their school and public communities. They also began discussing the first step "Be Proactive". This is a curricula that students will continue to explore and use throughout the rest of the year.

In Fifth Grade Social Studies, students discussed how thinking of a colonist’s entire community and doing things for the “Common-good” or Commonwealth was the main reason why the colonies succeed. The students then discussed why it is important to speak up against injustices they see using examples from Dr. King’s life and then identified ways students could speak up against injustices they see today.
Mrs. Arling’s Sixth Graders read Martin Luther King and the Philosophy of Non Violence from the Constitutional Rights Foundation and examined the roots of non violence from their previous study of Hindu and Jainism in ancient India. Students concluded with an activity about applying nonviolence to protests around the world today.
Seventh Grade
Seventh Grade World History & Cultures listened to the song “Winds of Change” by The Scorpions, a song written to reflect upon the fall of Communism in the Soviet Union. They then discussed how the song’s lyrics tie in with the teachings of Dr. King and how his words could have influenced people in the Soviet Union as Communism fell apart.
Eighth Grade
Eighth Graders in ELA read the contents of an excerpt of Martin Luther King’s “What is Your Life’s Blueprint?” speech, which was a speech he gave to Middle School students six months before his death, and discussed how an assigned quote and their own futures related to the speech.
Seen Around Our 'World'
We love to know what our students and families are up to outside of school! If you have something you would like to share, please don't hesitate to share it with us! Click here to email us your photos with details for us to post! We especially love to hear (and brag!) about student accomplishments outside of school! We love sharing ALL about each of our students!
Older Infants love Mr. Michael's Storytelling class!
Our Grade 4 students completed Week 2 of Fit Kids Lesson with Joyce Pepin. This week the students learned all about the Cardiovascular System. They
were introduced to "Mr. Bones" (poster hanging up) and
"Harry the Red Blood Cell" to learn about the job of red blood cells in the body.
The World Academy Spirit Squad works hard at knowing how to play the game they cheer for. This week, they practiced skills and did conditioning!
Kudos to our Preschool Fours and EK classes on their successful Winter Celebration Concerts!
The  Middle School  Ski/Snowboarding/Skating/Circuit Training Program is underway and the students are loving it!
Students completed team building challenges with Miss Bishop. They were given one large sheet of construction paper, one long length of tape, and two pairs of scissors and tasked with making the longest paper link chain possible in under 15 minutes. The winning team's chain was equal to 7 Middle School students in length! Wow!
Happy birthday, Hayden!
