West Houston Business Summit Was Great

HCC Was All In!

February 9, 2024: Houston Community College was there “en force” at the Houston West Chamber of Commerce’s West Houston Business Summit. The day featured a host of exhibitors, breakout sessions with panels and a luncheon.  Northwest President Dr. Zachary Hodges was a featured panelist speaking on the Future of Business & Technology.

HCC filled three tables at the luncheon with HCC alumni entrepreneurs and leaders. 


The Glenda & David Regenbaum Center for Entrepreneurship thanks Dick Helmey and Troy Gillaspia for inviting us to the summit. HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses was there as well, with another table full of alumni.


Also seated at their table, Beth Guide, of Vertical Web, another of our competition sponsors. The Houston West Chamber of Commerce is also a recurring sponsor of the annual HCC Business Plan Competition!  Thank you!

Houston Community College Northwest also hosted a table with HCC leaders & friends who are dedicated to a wide array of the Chambers efforts. It was a pleasure to have so many from HCC there with all gathered at this summit. Congratulations to Keri Werner and Jeffrey Reich-Hale and all involved!

Dr. Kimberly Burroughs is Celebrated

at the HCC OEI

February 12, 2024: Dr. Kimberly Burroughs was celebrated for her contribution to entrepreneurship at HCC on February 12 at the HCC Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives (OEI).


Dr. Burroughs has been part of the HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program for the last eight years; serving as Mod Faculty for 2-1/2 years and then Executive Director for the last 5-1/2 years.


During her time as Executive Director, Dr. Burroughs and her outstanding team reached 1,000 graduates together.


Dr. Maya Durnovo, Associate Vice Chancellor, Economic Development and Entrepreneurial Initiatives, presented Dr. Burroughs with an award recognizing her outstanding contribution to entrepreneurship at HCC.

Dr. Burroughs is from Detroit, Michigan. After 38 years in Houston, she is returning home to serve as Executive Director of Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses at Wayne State University. We will miss you dearly Kim; but are happy for you and wish you the best in this exciting next chapter of your career and life!   

Wallis Bank hosts partnership appreciation event & HCC was there!

February 28, 2024: It was a delight to gather with Wallis Bank and partners to celebrate their partnerships with the entities who support small businesses throughout the greater Houston area and beyond. 


Asif Dakri and Nasr Khan addressed the crowd. Next, they handed the mic to partners around the room who all got a chance to say a few words. 


Houston Community College was there, including Dr. Zachary Hodges, Dr. Muddassir Siddiqi, David Regenbaum, and Sandra Louvier.  


We’ve partnered with Wallis Bank for over a decade now to empower small business owners together through education and funding as they prepare for and navigate through the challenges and celebrations of launching and growing their businesses. 


Special thanks to Asif Dakri, Nasr Khan, Gary Owens, Roger Sebesta, Sheila Patterson, Terrence Hurley, Aziz Rahim, Gia Johnson, Harley Hurosky and all of the others at Wallis Bank for their support, sponsorship, time as advisors, speakers and on panels. 


Was also great seeing others who partner with Wallis Bank and with HCC, like the SBA, SCORE, Indo-American Chamber, the SBDC and many others!

H-TOWN ROUND UP 2024 hosted at HCC

February 29, 2024: Houston Exponential’s H-TOWN Roundup was held from Feb 25-Mar 1 throughout Houston. Houston Community College Central showcased a full morning of activities on February 29, centered around entrepreneurship resources, AI & Education and Global Mindsets; all organized by Dr. Ravi Brahmbhatt. 


Hosted by Dr. Muddassir Siddiqi, President, HCC Central, it was a platform for individuals to delve into topics such as Startup & Growth Resources, Global Skills Building & Education and Student Clubs & Talent.

The technology panel delved into Artificial Intelligence & education. It featured AI specialists, communications experts and instructors who shared from different perspectives.


The morning also included topics such as VR, demo presentations on preparing students for construction and fashion industries, international students with a global perspective and a Black History Global Resources Fair.


This event brought entrepreneurs, educators, and students to exchange knowledge, network, and explore opportunities for growth and development.


Houston Community College is honored to be a part of HTown Roundup and we thank Houston Exponential for such an outstanding effort to showcase and support the creation and success of startups and the commercialization of new technologies in the Houston community and beyond.

HCC- OEI Wins Community Engagement Initiative of the Year, 1st Runner-Up Award in 2023 International Competition by ACEEU


On June 26, 2023, the Accreditation Council for Entrepreneurial & Engaged Universities (ACEEU) hosted finalists from around the world for the Triple E Awards. The HCC Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives (HCC-OEI) team won this award in recognition of excellence in supporting and building minority owned businesses. Houston Community College presented 10 Programs: Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), Open for Business for Women of Color, HCC Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses, HCC Business Plan Competition, Small Business Success Series by HCC, Entrepreneurial Programs in Spanish, Entrepreneurship for Youth, Student Hackathons, Student Pitch Competitions, and the HCC Mattress Mack School of Selling. Dr. Maya Durnovo, Chief Entrepreneurial Initiatives Officer, presented in Barcelona, Spain on behalf the HCC OEI team.

Houston Community College Wins 2022 Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Award for Excellence in Specialty Entrepreneurship Education


 Houston-based academic group called out top universities and programs from around the world — including one in Houston and another in Texas — that are excelling in educating future entrepreneurs at the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers Conference in October.

The GCEC is a consortium of more than 250 university entrepreneurship programs that is headquartered at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, which has been named a top entrepreneurship program itself time and time again. Houston Community College's Office of Entrepreneurial Initiatives (led by Dr. Maya Durnovo) won in the Excellence in Specialty Entrepreneurship Education category for programming that serves women and minority owned businesses. GCEC Award-Innovation Map Article

Houston Community College Wins 2022 Bellwether Award for Entrepreneurial Initiatives


Houston Community College has won the 2022 Bellwether Award for its outstanding and innovative workforce development program: HCC’s Entrepreneurial Initiatives. The Bellwether Awards are widely regarded as one of the nation’s most competitive and prestigious recognitions for community colleges. Dr. Maya Durnovo, HCC’s chief entrepreneurial initiatives officer leads HCC’s mission of helping entrepreneurs start and grow businesses to bolster the local economy, create jobs and build Houston’s ecosystem by starting and growing small businesses, including minority-, veteran- and women-owned businesses. Dr. Durnovo said. “I am so fortunate to have a highly motivated and passionate team that strives for excellence in everything they do.”

2020 Entrepreneurial College of the Year


October. 6, 2020: The Houston Community College System was selected as the winner of the 2020 Entrepreneurial College of the Year award by the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE) at NACCE's annual conference, where entrepreneurial colleges from across the U.S. gather to share best practices. On behalf of all of our entrepreneurial programs and staff, we thank all of the entrepreneurs, partners, sponsors, volunteers, students, and HCC faculty and staff who have contributed to our efforts! Without your support and dedication to our programs, this wouldn't have been possible!
