Development in Mid Market: New Buildings, New Hotels, Buildings Sold & More
Developers Alexandria Real Estate Equities and TMG Partners purchased the property at 945 Market St., also known as 6x6 -- six retail floors adjacent to 6th Street -- but detailed plans for the space haven't been revealed as of yet. Alexandria Real Estate Equities shared, "We are excited to be bringing this important property under local control and look forward to securing a mixed-use project with a strong retail presence." Currently the only part of the building in use is the 167-parking space garage.

In other development news, SF Business Times noted: "San Francisco's hotel market is gearing up for another round of changes thanks to new and proposed developments, upgrades and additions." These projects include two Mid Market projects, a 16-story hotel proposed for 1310 Mission St. and a mixed-use project at 950-974 Market St., which will include 232 hotel rooms and 242 condos.
The City is also in the process of securing an interim use for the future site of an affordable housing project at 967 Mission St (near 6th Street). Looking for a two-year project among the proposals submitted, the City is expected to decide on a winning proposal by mid-October. The RFP
noted they are looking for projects that support the "
Pilipinas Cultural District goals."

Mayor London Breed
announced in early September an extensive plan to help those living on City streets who are suffering from mental health issues and substance abuse. In the press release, the Mayor's Office notes "T
he initial steps of the new initiative will provide enhanced care coordination, create a multi-
agency pilot to streamline housing and health care for the most vulnerable, and increase access to behavioral health services by expanding hours of the City's Behavioral Health Access Center." The SF Department of Public Health declared there are approximately 4,000 people on San Francisco streets in need of mental health services and noted 230 cases that are being addressed immediately through coordinated care and will expand the program used to address the initial group for others in San Francisco over the coming months.

Board of Supervisors Support
Street-Level Drug Dealing Task Force
In September the Board of Supervisors unanimously passed an ordinance to create a Street-Level Drug Dealing Task Force, proposed by District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney. Focused on the Mid Market, Tenderloin and Civic Center areas, "the resolution would require the San Francisco Department of Public Health to present a comprehensive emergency plan to improve street level crisis response; increase access to Narcan; expand street outreach; line up emergency responders and public safety personnel," among other elements.

5th Street Safety Project
SFMTA's
5th Street Safety Project goal of making the street a safer route for cyclists, pedestrians and public transit users is moving closer to reality. The
SFTMA board of directors unanimously approved plans that include a protected bike lane along 5th Street, from Caltrain to Market Street, and renovations such as "
widen[ing] sidewalks and change the geometry of the road, shaving it from four traffic lanes to three.
Crews will begin re-striping the street within six weeks, finish concrete work next winter and upgrade intersections in 2021."

Better Market Street Open House Looks at Further Plans for Section of Market Street
Better Market Street hosted another public open house event in August to expand on the plans for Market Street between Van Ness and Octavia.The organization noted a main focus would be to provide more pedestrian and cyclist safety with better marked crosswalks, protected bike lanes and new loading zones on side streets for commercial vehicles during peak commute hours. The initial plans also call for a ban on private vehicles on Market Street, including ride hailing cars. Construction on phase one begins 2020.

BART Stations and Elevators Are Getting Cleaner, Passenger Survey Says

-overall, passengers say the stations are getting cleaner, but the biggest jump is elevators: "
Elevators, which have frequently been used as restrooms, were rated good or excellent by 58.8% of passengers surveyed, compared to 42.8% the same quarter of 2018."

Pit Stop Pilot Program Introduces
24-Hour Public Toilet in District
Starting August 12, the Pit Stop program expanded hours of three of their toilets, Tenderloin Castro and Soma -- the last of which is located in the District at 6th Street at Jessie Street. With the pilot program now underway, Supervsor Matt Haney told the SF Examiner "We hope to demonstrate that there is a need for 24-hour restrooms throughout the Tenderloin, SoMa, and Civic Center 365 days a year." UN Plaza Fountain Undergoing Renovations
The
UN Plaza Fountain
is closed for a year as the San Francisco Department of Public Works addresses issues related to fountain drainage. During the construction, a plywood barricade has been erected around the fountain. To make the space more inviting during the repairs, the MMCBD is teaming up with the Civic Center Community Benefit District
to bring a large-scale artwork to the plywood barricade.

New Basketball Court from UNDSCVRD Brings Community Together for a Game
Open Monday-Friday, 11am-3pm, the 2-month pop-up opened in mid September and features a 3-on-3 league play for everyone. Sign up for league play and learn more about the colorful court, and other events at the court, like music on Fridays at 5pm, on their site.

More Bigbelly Trash Cans Installed in the District
We added a few more Big Belly solar
trash cans to the District, and moved a few to new locations along the Market Street corridor to optimize their usage. These trash cans continue to cut down on rummaging, litter and leakage.

Art on Market Street
The San Francisco Arts Commission has release the latests Art on Market Street poster series at SFMTA bus shelters. The new works draw attention to the historical protests that have occurred on Market Street.

The popular restaurant Namu Gaji is moving from its currently shuttered Mission District space (closed for seismic retrofit) the the District at the old Perennial space. Undiscovered Night Market Returns
The popular UNDISCOVERED SF Creative Night Market continues October 19, 4-10pm. This free, community event at 598 Stevenson St (at 7th St.) features a "curated collection of emerging artists and merchants that celebrate San Francisco's new cultural district - SOMA Pilipinas!" The event features local artisans, food vendors, and live music and dance performances.

Trolley Dances return October 19 and 20. Many of the performances from Epiphany Dance happen in the District along Market Street. Admission is the fare of a MUNI ticket.
