From Terror to Tourism: Crawford Notch & the Willy Slide

As we approach the 200th anniversary of the infamous Willey Slide in Crawford Notch, NH, on August 28, 2026, we will explore the history of the event as well as the geography and geology that caused the slide. We will look at the surprising first artist to depict the site, and those artists that followed.
We will examine the role of the event in the rise of tourism in the White Mountains and how visits to the site were promoted in guidebooks, maps, stereoviews, and souvenirs. Finally, we will review what you can see if you visit the area today.

2026 Book Group

The book group meets on the third Monday of each month in the Periodical Room, except on holidays. For August, the selection is "The Human Scale" by Lawrence Wright.
In The Human Scale, Pulitzer Prize–winning author Lawrence Wright crafts a tense, historically grounded thriller about a Palestinian-American FBI agent, Tony Malik, who—after surviving a terrorist bomb attack—teams up with a hardline Israeli police officer to solve the murder of an Israeli police chief in Gaza, navigating a web of extremism, corruption, and the deep human costs of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.

Join us for a Back-to-School celebration with Mother Goose! Enjoy a storytelling session followed by a fun coloring activity with Canva Pencil Bags. We can't wait to see you there!
Each visit will feature different storytellers sharing unique stories, accompanied by after-storytime activities on the last Thursday of each month. Everyone is welcome! An adult must accompany children under 10.

NH Wildlife: Get Closer to Nature

Join a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center naturalist and meet up to three live wild animals that you may encounter in our forests, fields, or wetlands. You will get a chance to meet these animal ambassadors up close and personal.
Learn about their roles in larger ecosystems and discover what makes these animals well-suited for life in New Hampshire—or even for life right in your backyard. Animal visitors will include a selection of species native to New Hampshire, such as reptiles, raptors, and mammals.
The lineup really depends on the week leading up to our event and on each animal's well-being, so come with an open heart and prepare for whatever nature has in store. It's bound to be an unforgettable experience.

Minecraft Civilizations

Registration opens on August 1st.
Attention all aspiring builders and adventurers! Starting this month, we’re kicking off our weekly Minecraft Civilizations meetings every Tuesday at 3:00 PM! This is your chance to team up with fellow Minecraft enthusiasts and construct your very own civilization in Survival mode.
This program has limited spots; only 12 participants. The program is open to those in Grades 3 and up, so gather your building materials and prepare for some serious fun. Please fill out the Google Form for Minecraft Civilization Fall registration.

Go Group - Strategy Gaming

Discover the fascinating two-player strategy game Go, which has been played for over 2,500 years! Even if you’re new, Evan will guide you through the basics in a friendly, learn-as-you-play environment. We’ll also explore various formats beyond traditional play, including team and cooperative modes, perfect for enjoying the game with friends. Join us for a morning of strategy, collaboration, and fun as we explore Go together!

Get to know other moms and ask questions in a supportive environment with a certified lactation consultant, Danielle Woods. Siblings are welcome. This group will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month at the library from 10-11:30 AM.

Your Conway Public Library card now grants you access to materials at the Ossipee, Jackson, Madison, and Cook Memorial (Tamworth) Libraries. Present your Conway library card to borrow items at any NNHLC library, or browse our shared catalog to request items be transferred to Conway for convenient pick-up.
