Wilson Talent Center Healthcare Students Advance to HOSA State Leadership Conference |
|
Twenty-nine students from various healthcare programs at the Wilson Talent Center recently placed in the Top 8 of their respective categories at HOSA-Future Health Professionals regional competition held December 16, 2022. By placing in the Top 8, they secure a spot to attend and compete at the HOSA State Leadership Conference on April 27-28, 2023, at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. Students who placed in the top three at regionals also received a medal for their performance.
HOSA-Future Health Professionals is a global student-led organization whose mission is to promote career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality healthcare to all people. HOSA is the only national student organization that exclusively serves secondary and post-secondary/collegiate students in pursuit of a career in the health professions.

The Wilson Talent Center, operated by Ingham Intermediate School District, offers career and technical education programs for high school juniors and seniors who reside in Dansville, East Lansing, Haslett, Holt, Leslie, Mason, Okemos, Stockbridge, Waverly, Webberville and Williamston. It has been an exciting and busy year for us here at LAN! With 2022 officially coming to a close and as our final e-newsletter for the year, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight a few key projects and accomplishments from over the last year:

January 2022 | Officially welcomed back our international service for a 13th year with Apple Leisure Group/Apple Vacations with nonstop flights to Cancun and Punta Cana for the 2022 season.

March 2022 | Awarded $8.183 million in federal funding to expand our existing cargo ramp to better accommodate current operations and future growth at LAN.

April 2022 | Kicked off our Master Plan Update project, which is a 15-to-20-year plan for the airport, to better prepare and plan for the future at LAN.

May 2022 | Launched our brand new website — flylansing.com — featuring a completely redesigned look and layout for an improved user experience and the ability to provide our customers with quick, easy access to up-to-date information about the airport.

July 2022 | Announced that Avelo Airlines would be starting service at LAN with nonstop flights to Orlando beginning in October 2022. LAN was proudly the first airport in Michigan to announce a new partnership with Avelo Airlines.

September 2022 | Awarded a $3.6 million grant from the EDA for a site readiness development project for water, sewer, and utility infrastructure upgrades to make build-ready sites on a 47-acre parcel of undeveloped land that is part of our Port Lansing industrial park, which will spur economic growth at LAN and in the surrounding communities.

October 2022 | Celebrated the inaugural flight on Avelo Airlines from LAN to Orlando International Airport (MCO) — Avelo Airlines chairman and CEO Andrew Levy spent the day in Lansing to help us celebrate!

November 2022 | Our facilities and maintenance team wrapped up two major projects, giving LAN some needed upgrades — complete rehabilitation of our long-term parking lot, including new concrete islands for easier exit pathways, and a full renovation of our Friendship Room event space, which you'll read more about below.
While these are just a few highlights from the past year, most importantly, none of these accomplishments would be possible without the dedicated and hard-working team at LAN, or without the support of the Capital Region Airport Authority board, our community, and our partners.

Avelo Airlines takes flight at LAN: Inaugural flight celebration |

We were thrilled to celebrate Avelo Airlines' inaugural flight from LAN to Orlando on Oct. 26! Avelo’s chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, joined us for a day full of events with different community leaders that were organized and co-hosted by CRAA. Read more about the events below.
Leadership discussion with Andrew Levy, Tom Izzo, and Quentin Messer, Jr. at the Breslin Center
Tom Izzo joined Andrew Levy for a one-on-one discussion on the importance of team and leadership. Quentin Messer, Jr., CEO of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), also joined the discussion for a few questions. The event was moderated by Michigan Business Network’s Chris Holman.
Business Roundtable and fireside chat with Andrew Levy and Paula Cunningham at the Graduate Hotel
More than 85 local business leaders joined us at the Graduate Hotel in East Lansing for an exclusive luncheon and fireside chat with Andrew Levy. The event was moderated by Paula Cunningham, chair of the Mid-Michigan Business Travel Coalition (MMBTC), and was also co-hosted by the MMBTC, the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce, and the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP). Andrew shared more about Avelo Airlines, how the airline started, and the future of the company.
Inaugural flight celebration and send-off at LAN
The airport hosted an inaugural flight celebration and send-off at LAN for 160 passengers taking the flight with over 100 community leaders, elected officials, and local media in attendance. Invited guests joined us for refreshments, photo ops, networking, and fun! Andrew Levy took part in multiple live and pre-recorded interviews with local media during the event, and it ended with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and official remarks from airport leadership, elected officials, and Avelo leadership. Later, we watched a water cannon salute performed by the airport’s public safety team for the Avelo aircraft and waved goodbye as the inaugural flight to Orlando departed LAN.

Lansing airport receives $3.6 million grant from EDA for site readiness development project |
|
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) recently announced that the Capital Region Airport Authority (CRAA) was awarded a $3.6 million grant for the LAN site readiness development project for water, sewer, and utility infrastructure upgrades to a 47-acre parcel of land that is part of our Port Lansing industrial park to spur economic development and growth at LAN and the surrounding community.
The grant is funded by the American Rescue Plan and EDA’s $300 million Coal Communities Commitment. The project is expected to cost an estimated $4.4 million, and is expected to create at least 250 jobs, retain 10 jobs, and generate an estimated $100 million in private investment. The EDA investment will be matched with nearly $900,000 in local funds from the airport to complete the project.
“This grant will allow us to move forward with the site readiness project at LAN, giving us the ability to diversify our revenues and create opportunities for development efforts for businesses that need warehouse space and facilities with quick access to the airfield for distribution of product, cargo logistics, and other business operations,” said Nicole Noll-Williams, president and CEO of the CRAA. “This grant could not have been possible without the support of our federal partners, Sen. Peters, Sen. Stabenow, and Rep. Slotkin, and we want to thank them for their continued support.”

LAN Spotlight: The Friendship Room renovation and #FlyLansing facilities crew |
|
Over the last eight months, the facilities team at LAN has been hard at work on a full renovation project of the Friendship Room, which is the old restaurant space on the first floor of the terminal building. The space was last renovated nearly 32 years ago in 1991, and only included minor updates. Roughly 80% of the total renovation project was completed in-house by 16 LAN team members, saving the airport over half a million dollars in outside labor costs.

The LAN facilities team was responsible for:All demolition of the space, which is just over 5,300 sq. ft. This included removing multiple walls, flooring, and other materials.
- All construction of the updated space, including rebuilding several sections of the original woodwork that had been damaged over the years to match the original detailing and design, as well as building two new private restrooms within the space.
- Installing all new lighting fixtures and new plumbing fixtures.
- Sanding original woodwork to be painted, as well as painting throughout the entire space and ceiling work, including grid-cleaning to remove staining and installing new ceiling tiles.
- Rebuilding the handicap-accessible ramp railing to meet current code requirements, and reinstalling original railing pieces following railing upgrades.
The space operated as a restaurant from the early 1970s through the early 1990s. After the restaurant officially closed, the room has been used primarily as a meeting space for tenants and community groups for trainings, banquets, or other business needs. The space will continue to be available as a meeting and event space to rent for our tenants, community groups, and the general public. The upgrades make this space great for a wide variety of professional or personal needs, with flexible layout options and several amenities in a unique venue. Thank you to the facilities team at LAN for their hard work in making this such a beautiful space for everyone to enjoy!

Michigan Retailers to Award $42k in College, Trade School Scholarships
for 2023-24 Academic Year
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Retailers Foundation, a division of Michigan Retailers Association, has kicked off its annual college and professional training scholarship competition for the 2023-2024 academic year.
The Foundation will award 12 scholarships this year, each worth $3,500. Since its inception in 1999, the Foundation has awarded more than 600 scholarships to Michigan students, totaling more than $650,000.
Recipients are selected based on outstanding academic performance and extracurricular activities, regardless of financial need.
Background
Those eligible to apply are high school seniors and college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are:
- Dependent sons and daughters of owners of MRA member businesses, or of full-time employees of MRA member firms. The parent-employee must have been employed by a MRA member firm for at least one year as of January 1 of the year in which the scholarships are awarded.
- Part-time employees of MRA member businesses who are full-time students. Part-time employees must have been employed by a MRA member firm for at least six months as of January 1 of the year in which the scholarships are awarded.

LAFCU promotes Clare Gomez to organizational development manager
New position oversees credit union’s staff training, from onboarding to leadership programs
LANSING, Mich. — Clare Gomez will create and administer employee training and education in the newly created position of organizational development manager for LAFCU.
Gomez’s position was created to ensure that LAFCU staff have the necessary resources and consistent training needed to provide excellent service to LAFCU’s 74,000 members. The position reaffirms LAFCU’s commitment to its mission and to the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.”
“Clare has always shown tremendous dedication to our employees and their professional success,” said Robyn Howell, LAFCU chief human resources officer. “This new role recognizes Clare’s contributions and allows her to develop innovative employee training programs and opportunities to support staff from newly hired to the management team.”
Gomez has nearly three decades of financial experience and joined LAFCU 25 years ago. She most recently served as a trainer for the past eight years, including designing employee training materials, and managing the credit union’s intranet, database and learning management system. During her tenure, she has also worked as a teller and loan processor.
“The best part about my job is that I get to know every new employee who comes through the door,” Gomez said. “In my new role, I aim to streamline and create consistency for training across the organization at all levels. I also intend to develop and implement a mentorship program for future leaders.”
Gomez holds both an associate degree and certification in credit union management from Lansing Community College. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree and is a member of the LAFCU Giving Committee, which coordinates fundraisers and internal auctions for employee-selected charities.
“I am truly invested in all of our employees’ success – not just for our organization, but for each one of them individually.”

Leslie Rorie has joined LAFCU as a controller, where she will supervise the credit union’s accounting department and oversee its financial and regulatory functions.
Rorie will work directly with LAFCU’s chief financial officer to maintain a highly cohesive and trained accounting department and support all finance and accounting functions at the credit union.
“Since joining LAFCU, Leslie has already demonstrated her experience, leadership and utmost professionalism,” said James McHale, LAFCU chief financial officer. “Her talents are valued and a tremendous complement to the finance department.”
Rorie, a resident of Oak Park, has over two decades of experience in the credit union industry. She was most recently an assistant vice president of a credit union in Livonia, Michigan, where she was in charge of the loss prevention department. She was a controller for eight years at a credit union in Southfield, Michigan, and has also worked as an accountant, auditor, and accounting and branch manager.
“Accounting is so important to the foundation of the organization,” Rorie said. “In my new role, I will continue to build on the solid base that LAFCU has established and develop processes and procedures to ensure that our members can use all of LAFCU’s products and services and that financial information is accurate and reliable.”
Rorie holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. She is a long-standing member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., serving in various roles, including finance committee chair and treasurer of the Service Builders Foundation.
“LAFCU’s culture was a huge reason why I chose to join the organization,” noted Rorie. “I noticed it during my interview process, and I continue to feel it throughout the company, from the top down.”

EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSN. -CHAPTER 55 AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS:
The Experimental Aircraft Association-Chapter 55 of Mason has named two students as recipients of their Newberry Aviation Scholarship for 2022.
Chara Walters was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 and Kaylee Spencer was awarded a scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Both Chara and Kaylee are second-year students at Lansing Community College School of Aviation Technology located at Mason Jewett Field, Mason, MI.
EAA Chapter 55 has a longstanding commitment to support educational opportunities for students seeking aviation careers. These students were chosen based on a combination of academic achievement. community engagement and defined goals for a future in aviation.
