Ponzi Scheme /ˈpänzē ˌskēm/
noun
- A form of fraud in which belief in the success of a nonexistent enterprise is fostered by the payment of quick returns to the first investors from money invested by later investors.
| |
In the pursuit of financial growth, the promise of high returns with minimal risk can be incredibly enticing. Unfortunately, this enticing prospect is often a siren song leading to financial ruin, as it's a hallmark of various insidious investment scams. From the classic Ponzi and pyramid schemes to the more modern "pump and dump" and fake cryptocurrency rackets, these frauds prey on optimism and a desire for quick wealth.
The core of these scams lies in a deceptive assurance: significant profits with little to no effort or danger. This directly contradicts the fundamental principle of legitimate investing, where higher returns inherently come with higher risk. Scammers, however, artfully craft narratives to make the impossible seem plausible.

Mid Oregon kicked off its 12th annual Holiday Dough fundraiser supporting local charities that provide food and other needed items to individuals and families experiencing financial challenges during the holiday season.
One hundred percent of the contributions stay in the community where they were collected and will benefit the following local nonprofits: The Giving Plate (Bend), La Pine Christmas Basket Association, Redmond Jericho Road, Madras County Food Pantry, Crook County Holiday Partnership (Prineville), and Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank.
Donate before December 5 at one of our branches, midoregon.com, or 541-382-1795.
Thank you for helping to bring holiday cheer to local families!

In partnership with KTVZ, Mid Oregon presented the Crook County Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) a $1,000 check to support their upcoming trip to Washington D.C. for the 2026 Memorial Day Parade, which will celebrate the 250th birthday of the United States of America.
Next Memorial Day, JROTC units from across the country will participate in military honors in the nation's capital. Among those invited are three Central Oregon programs—from Crook County, La Pine, and Mountain View high schools—bringing well-deserved national recognition to our region.
Students emphasize that every donation, big or small, brings them closer to representing Oregon at this prestigious Memorial Day event.

In partnership with KTVZ, Mid Oregon and Dutch Bros Coffee Company, Pay It Forward recognizes people who make our community a better place to live.
Joel Brader, owner of La Pine restaurant, Harvest Depot, often gives people in need a free meal. The moment he received the $500 award, he knew just what he was going to do with it.
"We'll put it directly towards feeding people in the month of December," Brader said.
Brader also shared that he would be nothing without the La Pine community, as locals and regulars are what keep Harvest Depot going. Congratulations, Joel!
To nominate someone in your neighborhood you can fill out the nomination entry form on the KTVZ21 website.
