Big Adventure—Tiny Budget

Big Adventure, Tiny Budget. Summer budget tips. Mid Oregon Member Connections Financial Education

Summer has a way of whispering, “Just one more lounge on the patio… just one more swim… just one more day trip…” and suddenly your wallet is the one asking for a vacation. The good news: some of the best weekends across Central Oregon are surprisingly affordable—especially with a pinch of planning. This guide is packed with low-cost ideas for Mid Oregon members, whether you’re heading out with family, a partner, or friends—so you can get maximum sunshine with minimum spending.

A smart summer budget isn’t about saying “no” to everything—it’s about making your yeses intentional. Start by identifying your top two or three “summer priorities” (maybe it’s lake days, concerts, camping, or a couple of mini road trips), then build a simple monthly fun fund around them. When you decide ahead of time what matters most, it’s easier to skip the random add-ons that don’t actually make the weekend better.

Then focus on the sneaky summer spenders: gas, food, and “we’ll just grab it there” convenience purchases. Batch errands so you’re not driving extra trips, pick one destination per outing (less mileage, fewer impulse stops), and pack a cooler with the basics so hunger doesn’t make budget decisions for you. One more easy win: set a weekly “treat limit” (like one coffee run and one ice-cream stop) and keep it visible—when the rule is clear, you can enjoy the treat without the guilt spiral afterward.

Mid Oregon has you covered with these great tips on how to Staycation like a pro:

  • Use Central Oregon's best "Amenity": FREE (or low-cost) nature
  • Build your weekend around free community events
  • Do a "Water Day" without a resort price tag
  • Try some family-friendly fun that doesn't quietly wreck your budget at the Library, or Public Parks
  • Keep food fun—without paying restaurant prices all weekend—pack a picnic or have a snack bag ready to go

Our blog post spells out some great funds saving tips in detail, so don't skip reading!

Scammers Posing as Government Officials Are Costing Americans Big—Here’s How You Can Stay Safe

If a call, text, or email claiming to be from the IRS, Social Security, or law enforcement makes your stomach drop, that panic is exactly what scammers are counting on. With Americans losing more than $800 million in 2025 to government‑impersonation schemes, it’s worth knowing the fastest “gut-check” red flags—urgency, threats, and demands for gift cards, crypto, or personal codes. In this post, we break down how these scams work, what to do in the moment, and how to report it at ic3.gov to help protect others.

Community Corner

Congratulations La Pine Branch!

We are honored to share that Mid Oregon's La Pine branch has been recognized as the "Business of the Year" by the La Pine Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center!

At Mid Oregon, we believe that we are only as strong as the community we serve. This award reflects the hard work of our La Pine team and our dedication to providing exceptional financial services while fostering local growth. Thank you to the chamber for this prestigious honor and to our members for allowing us to be part of your financial journey.

The Mid Oregon Credit Union branch in La Pine has been awarded the Business of the Year award from the La Pine Chamber of Commerce.
Mid Oregon Credit Union recognizes Furnish Hope through Pay It Forward with $500 donation.

Pay It Forward

The Pay It Forward program shines a spotlight on those who make our community a better place to call home. To nominate someone in your neighborhood you can fill out the nomination entry form on the KTVZ21 website.

Pay-It-Forward Recognizes

Furnish Hope

Big cheers to Furnish Hope right here in Bend—our latest Pay It Forward honoree! This amazing local nonprofit is all about making fresh starts feel like home, and we’re thrilled to help shine a light on their work.

Through our Pay It Forward partnership with Dutch Bros Coffee, we surprised Furnish Hope with a $500 award. (Cue the happy dance!) Every dollar helps them do what they do best: take an empty space and turn it into a warm, welcoming place to land.

That gift will go toward Furnish Hope’s Match Program—a community-powered goal to raise $50,000 ahead of their grand opening and the reveal of a new warehouse. Translation: more couches, beds, tables, and everyday essentials ready to help more neighbors settle in with dignity and comfort.

Executive Director Megan Martin put it perfectly: small gifts add up fast. If 500 people give $100, that’s the full match—turning simple generosity into a big wave of support. Want to be part of it? Consider making a gift (or sharing their mission with a friend) and help pay it forward—one nightstand, one lamp, one “welcome home” at a time.

It’s a small gesture with a big impact, and Mid Oregon is proud to stand behind community champions like Furnish Hope who make Central Oregon a stronger, more caring place for everyone.

Business Spotlight —Expressway Market and Deli

Community Roots, Fueling Your Future

In Central Oregon, we know that the strongest bonds are built over time. That’s why Mid Oregon is proud to highlight a valued, long-standing business member—Bend’s Expressway Market (and Gas Station). Expressway isn’t just a business on a map; they are our friends and neighbors, rooted in the same soil and dedicated to the people who call this high desert home.

Since 1957, Mid Oregon has been the trusted local choice for financial well-being, providing the tools families need to thrive. Likewise, since 1987, Expressway has been a cornerstone of your daily lives, offering a friendly smile and a warm deli meal to keep you moving to home, work, or to your next adventure.

“In the last 35 years, we’ve seen Bend change and grow, but our mission at Expressway has stayed the same—providing excellent service to the people we live and work alongside. Having a financial partner like Mid Oregon, who understands the history of this region as well as we do, has been vital to our success. It’s a relationship built on local trust and shared values."

Tom Healy, Owner of Expressway

Stop by the Bend Expressway today to see how they are fueling our community. Experience the warmth of local service you can trust—yesterday, today, and for years to come.
