Del. Schmidt recognized for pioneering independent voter legislation in Maryland (HB496)

Election Law - Unaffiliated Voters - Open Primary Elections

This bill allows voters who are not affiliated with a political party to choose either the unaffiliated ballot or the ballot of the political party they prefer in a primary election. It also makes clear that selecting a party’s ballot does not automatically make them a member of that party.

Protecting Sports Officials Act MD House Bill 1053

Establishes that a person who intentionally causes physical injury to another if the person knows that the other is an official, an umpire, a referee, or a judge officiating at a sporting event, is guilty of a second-degree assault, authorizing a police officer to arrest the person without a warrant.

Sales and Use Tax - Cut Flowers MD House Bill 909

Providing an exemption from the sales and use tax for the sale of cut flowers by a farmer.

Juvenile Justice Restoration Act MD House Bill 449

Authorizes a law enforcement officer to conduct a lawful custodial interrogation of a child if the child's parent, guardian, or custodian consents to the custodial interrogation of the child without the child's consultation with an attorney.

Restriction of Distribution of Sexual Material Harmful to Minors MD House Bill 908

Establishes that websites with harmful sexual material must have age verification; and prohibits the website or third party that performs an age verification from retaining any identifying information of an individual.

Gun Theft Felony Act of 2026 MD House Bill 863

Classifying the theft of a firearm as a felony.

Why Maryland Electricity Cost's Keep Rising?

Marylanders are starting to feel the real consequences of these policies. When programs like RGGI take about 27% of revenue from natural gas plants and nearly 48% from coal plants, those costs don’t just disappear. They get passed on to families and businesses.

Add in the Climate Solutions Now Act and the growing list of mandates coming out of Annapolis, and it’s no surprise electricity prices keep rising. Maryland needs energy policies that keep power reliable and affordable, not ones that make it harder and more expensive to produce.

Scout's Honor

Del. Schmidt welcomed Scout Pack 731 to the state capital for an educational tour and mock debate. They proudly represented their pack and showed that the scout's code is as strong as ever.

Del Schmidt participated in Pack 731's Pinewood Derby adult branch. His car wowed the crowd, taking 1st place in the Business Division.

Read Across America

For Read Across America Day, Del. Schmidt donated the book, Earl & Worm. Read Across America is a day that celebrates the power of reading. It also reminds Americans to read. Reading is very beneficial, it improves mental health, expands knowledge, and helps children in cognitive development and supports their creativity.
