JUST DO IT
“His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” John 2:5
Miracles are signs because they point to something greater. They manifest God’s glory that leads people to believe! The first miracle Jesus performed was turning water into wine while He was attending a wedding celebration.
In Jesus’ culture, it was a huge embarrassment to run out of wine at a wedding, especially for the groom. To run out so early in the celebration didn’t look good for his marriage.
Mary, Jesus’ mother was also attending this wedding and she understood how important it was for the groom’s reputation to have wine available for his guests. So she goes to Jesus. Why would she go to talk to Jesus? Because she knows He can do something about it!
And even though He hadn’t performed a miracle yet, she knew that Jesus was God’s begotten Son and He can do anything. She had a front row seat in the room when the angel told her, “With God all things are possible.”
So Mary tells Jesus the issue and His answer is found in verse 4, “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.” Mary doesn’t miss a beat, she responds with the words, “Do whatever He tells you to do.” Wow, how different would our lives be if we lived by those words? It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to, or don’t understand why, or if you can’t figure it out, JUST DO IT!
We give this advice to our kids often. “If you’ll just listen to me and do what I say, life will go well for you.” Why do we think that we can grow up and not follow that advice?
Back to the miracle, Jesus turns to the servants and tells them to fill six stone water jars to the brim with water and give it to the Master of the feast.
First –century weddings lasted a week. These pots of water were purification jars; they have been used for people to wash their dirty, dusty hands in. People would stick their arms up to their elbows in the jars then shake them dry.
These are the jars Jesus said to fill with water and serve. Think about the obedience of the servants. If you were in their shoes would you want to do what Jesus said? Then imagine their surprise when the Master of the ceremony tasted the water which had actually turned into fine wine!
Mary believed in Jesus. The servants obeyed Jesus. Even when it didn’t make any sense! Then Jesus manifested His glory and the Bible says His disciples believed in Him and trusted Him.
What if the miracle in your life is just on the other side of obedience? Obedience to His Word took place before the miracle. Have you acted on what He has told you to do, even when it makes no sense to you? Are you acting on the Words of truth found in the Word?
Declaration to Life: Faith is a verb, it acts! Faith fills dirty jars with water and serves it to a host. I will walk by faith, not by sight. (2 Cor. 5:7) and without faith it is impossible to please Him. (Heb. 11:6). I choose today to say, “yes” to whatever it is I need to do to obey you!
