HOW DO YOU VIEW LOVE

Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end]. 1 Cor. 13:8

Lately, I have felt challenged to look at love from a different perspective.

If I were to be brutally honest and search into the depths of my heart I’d have to admit that sometimes I look at love in the context of what it will offer me. I hold out my heart and say to those I love, “Here is my heart…can you fill my empty places? Will you do something that makes me feel special? Will you say something that makes me feel more significant?

The Lord has been speaking to me about the fact that if I only view love through what it will give me, then love from others will fail every time. The love itself doesn’t fail, but it’s the fact that others were never meant to be my god.

Even the most loving family, great friends and a thriving, growing ministry can never fully fill me and meet all of my deepest needs.

God’s love NEVER fails.

When I read what’s known as the “love” chapter in 1 Corinthians 13, I can’t read it with eyes to see what love should give me. I need to read it with the realization that this is the kind of love I can give.

I have to CHOOSE to give love that is patient. I can choose for my love to be kind. My love doesn’t keep a record of wrongs. My love will protect and persevere. And I can choose to lay my heart open to Jesus and let Him fill it instead of demanding that those around me do things for me they were never meant to do.

Love isn’t about getting. Love is what I can give and the more I love others the more I feel loved. When I truly love, it changes everything!

Loving others can be so hard, but Jesus wants us to do it in His strength, not on our own. He gives us the Holy Spirit to be our helper. The Holy Spirit will help us love others when it’s hard to do it on our own.

Declaration to Life: My love isn’t going to be about what I can get from those around me. My love is what I have the opportunity to give.
