ABBA FATHER

 He said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you…Mark 14:36

For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” Romans 8:15

During the most challenging time in the life of Jesus, He used a very personal term to cry out to God.

“Abba” is an Aramaic word used by Mark because there wasn’t a Greek word that was suitable. The Greek word was “pater”, or “Father.” So Mark recorded them both; “Abba, Father.”

For Jesus to call God, “Abba” would be like a child saying, “Daddy” or “Papa” today. It’s a personal, enduring, emotional term that comes straight from the heart. It reflects trust, dependency, and warmth.

The term “Abba” appears again in Paul’s letters in Romans and Galatians. Paul said Christians, by way of the Holy Spirit, can now call out to the Father using the same two words; A heartfelt, personal cry, “Abba Father!” 

Son ship (and daughter ship) is the privilege of all who call Christ their Lord and call God their Father. When we pray, we can think of God in two ways…as a Father, which denotes honor and in an even more personal and emotional way as a Daddy.

We have been adopted and adoption brings us into full rights of our Daddy God. As His kids, we must know who we are and our birthright so we can live and walk in all God says we can. We can live free from any kind of fear and bondage because He is a good Father!



Declaration to Life: I am a part of God’s family. I can approach Him as my Daddy God, my Papa and as His child; all that He has belongs to me!
