Mid-Week Updates
June 9, 2021
Dear Church,

It is now time. This has been a long farewell. Since December, we have known that come July, I would no longer be your associate pastor. That time is now near and I must say good-bye. It has been a pleasure serving with you in ministry. We have experienced great joys and deep sorrows together. We have shared communion, heard a word from the Lord, sung with hearts joined together, and learned of how great God’s love is for us and the world. In short, we have worshiped together for five years, or 242 Sundays, give or take a hurricane cancellation. How time flies!

We have served together. We have stumbled through online worship and zoom meetings together. We have prayed together. We have studied the Bible. We have read remarkable books. We have sought ways to empower the under-resourced neighbors in Rocky Mount. From mountain-top experiences to valley-like lows, we have journeyed together with God into becoming more faithful, mission-minded disciples of Jesus.

I cannot say that my time of ministry with you has been flawless, but I can say that my time with you has made me a better minister of the gospel. My father taught me that the aim of ministry is to leave a church better than when you found it. He adapted this principle from his time as a Boy Scout. They are taught to leave a campsite better than when they found it. I do not know if that is true, for only you can answer that question, but I know that I leave having been made better because of my time with you. Thank you for all the love, care, and support you have given to me and my family. We love you and will miss you.

So friends, I say to you as a final word of encouragement: keep the faith, share what you have with the poor, make glad the hearts of one another, and live in peace. Remember, you are indeed better together. And above all, know Christ
and make Christ known.

Peace,
Pastor Matt

"The End"
June 13, 2021

The theme of our worship service on Sunday,
June 13, at 10:00 a.m. is The End. The scripture lessons are Psalm 20 and II Corinthians 5:6-10,
14-17. The end of faith draws us into God's new creation.

We will continue to wear masks, so that we can have congregational singing in a way that is safe. Children wearing masks will come forward for the children’s sermon.

There are two entrances open at the rear of the sanctuary: Sunset Avenue and the ramp door under the steeple into the narthex (along Church Street).
Parking is available in the gravel lot south of the church, adjacent to Bulluck Furniture Company.

The flowers on the Sanctuary altar this Sunday are given to the glory of God and in celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Ed and Emily Vann
on June 15.

All worship services will be livestreamed at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays on
Pastoral Transition Update

The month of June will be a time of change for our congregation as Pastors Jim Bell and Matt Seaton receive appointments to other churches. Rev. Jim Bell will become Lead Pastor of First United Methodist Church in Wilson. Rev. Matt Seaton will become Lead Pastor of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Pastor Matt will preach here for the last time this Sunday, June 13. His sermon is The End. It is based on Psalm 20:1-9 and II Corinthians 5:6-10, 14-17. He will share how the end of faith draws us into God’s new creation.

Pastor Jim will preach here for the final time on June 20. His sermon is Saying Goodbye: Thankful for Your Partnership. This message is based on Philippians 1:3-11 and John 15:12-17. He will express his gratitude for our partnership in the gospel during his service here.

A farewell reception for Pastors Jim Bell and Matt Seaton will be held on Sunday, June 20, following worship under the portico to express appreciation for their combined 12 years of dedicated service to our congregation. June 20 will be their final Sunday in worship as our pastors. SPRC hopes that the congregation will be able to stop by and share their love and well wishes for both of our ministers.

The Rev. David Joyner, currently serving as Pastor of Red Oak and Bethlehem United Methodist Churches, will be appointed as our Pastor at the NC Annual Conference later this month. He will officially become our Pastor on June 29. His first Sunday leading worship will be Sunday, July 4.
Let's Send Birthday Wishes to Pat Shaw!

David Shaw, son of Caswell and Pat Shaw, has requested, on behalf of his father, that we send birthday cards to his mother, Pat, who will turn 80 years old on Friday, June 11. FUMC along with other churches hold a special place in the life of Caswell and Pat Shaw. David is hoping FUMC could "put some joy in his Mother's heart" on her 80th birthday and feels certain his Mother would love to hear from everyone and reconnect with those she has had friendships with during the many years of their ministry. If you are interested, please send birthday wishes and cards to:

2021 Preschool Summer Camps

Camp 1 - Around the World in 5 Days
June 14-18, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Looking for some fun - but educational - activities for your little ones this summer? Let your kids and their friends take a trip around the world! The children will learn about different countries around the world. A puppet show will introduce each place we visit. They will learn songs, dances, crafts, and experience a food from that country.

Camp 2 - Let's Go Camping
July 19-23, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

This week, we will go camping. The students will experience what it's like to sleep in a tent, have a campfire, make s'mores and other outside events while camping. It will be a fun-filled week of adventure.

Each camp is $175 for the week. Registration fees are nonrefundable. Exceptions will be considered in the case of illness or family emergency if requested in writing. You may register here and then mail payment. However, your child is not officially registered until payment is received.

Preschool Summer Camp applications are available in the preschool office and the church office as well. If you have questions, please contact Cheryl Stanton, Preschool Director, at 252-977-0475 or preschool@fumcrm.org.
Online Giving

Did you know that one-third of our congregation gives electronically? And the majority of those who give electronically have chosen to maximize their impact by setting up a recurring donation which automates their gift to give on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly schedule. We give thanks for your continued support and for sharing the love of Christ to others during this time of great need.

To set-up your recurring gift, or to give a one-time gift, visit our website at fumcrm.org/give; give via our church app (see below how to download); or by sending your check to:
