As we approach the 4th of July holiday weekend—a time when we should celebrate our nation and our freedoms—we are doing so in the dark shadow of recent Supreme Court rulings. This month has been one setback after another from the decades of progress we have made on civil rights, reproductive rights and public safety. These rights have been upended by the decisions of a right-wing, extremist dominated Supreme Court three of whom were appointed by a disgraced former president who lost the popular vote, but gained the presidency through our antiquated electoral college system. Perhaps no decision was more gut-wrenching than the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the first time ever that the Supreme Court has taken away a constitutional right. The ruling jeopardizes women, rolls back fundamental rights, and, ultimately, will significantly impact the health and life of many women in our country. Read more.

County Offer COVID-19 Vaccines to Children Ages 6 Months to 5 Years, But Initial Supplies Will Be Limited
|
|
Following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) full approval of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years, Montgomery County’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has started vaccinating this age group as vaccines are available. However, initial supplies are limited. Read more.

Rental Assistance for County Residents
|
|
Eligible Montgomery County renters can soon apply for additional COVID-19 rent relief through the fourth phase of the County’s Rent Relief program, which provides financial assistance for tenants that have experienced a financial hardship due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Read more.

for COVID-19.
In-person PCR testing continues at multiple sites throughout the community. A schedule of testing locations can be found at the County’s website.

Holiday Schedule for Independence Day on Monday, July 4

The Montgomery County Government, and programs that impact County residents, will observe schedule and program changes for the formal observance of Independence Day on Monday, July 4. In some cases, services also will have schedule changes on Sunday, July 3. Read more.

SHA Update | Resurfacing of University Boulevard West
|
|
MD193 (University Boulevard West) from MD185 (Connecticut Avenue) to MD586 (Veirs Mill Road) is being resurfaced. The work is part of a “area-wide” resurfacing project.
The work includes:
- Lane narrowing from 11 to 10 feet (traffic calming)
- Edgeline widening (traffic calming)
- Continental crosswalk markings (pedestrian safety upgrades)
- The potential for multimodal improvements in the future. (currently under engineering evaluation)

2022 Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival Poster Contest
Winner is K.S. Brenowitz of Silver Spring
The sixth annual Wheaton Arts Parade & Festival poster will be based on the design submitted by K.S. Brenowitz, a Silver Spring resident and graphic artist. The contest was open to all residents of Montgomery County. Following their selection, Brenowitz worked with Wheaton Art Parade designer Josue Martinez of Corinto Gallery to apply the original design to the poster and for use on other promotional materials, including the T-shirt, for the event that will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, in Downtown Wheaton. League of Women Voters Primary Election Voters' Guide 2022 is Available!
|

|
The League of Women Voters of Mo Co’s Voters’ Guide has candidate responses to questions asked by the non-partisan League. Use it to assist you in your decision-making process as you prepare to vote your mail-in ballot (if you applied for one), or at Early Voting Centers from July 7 to 14, or on Primary Election Day, July 19.
Four ways to get the Voters’ Guide:
1. Online at VOTE411.org – enter your address to see the candidates on your ballot and compare the their responses to our questions in English and Spanish.
2. On paper - distributed to Montgomery County facilities such as libraries, senior and community centers the week of June 13. This English version is shorter, due to space limitations.
3. On our website, lwvmocomd.org - printable Voters' Guide in English and Spanish in PDF format.
4. In El Tiempo Latino newspapers – Spanish version as an insert on June 17.
