Fall Holiday Break
La Raza Thanksgiving Potluck
By Ruby Estrada
Happy Belated Thanksgiving! On Thursday, November 17, La Raza Club hosted a small feast of homemade Mexican style tamales to celebrate Thanksgiving with the Middle College community. The very delicious tamales were made by La Raza Club’s co-president Esmeralda, who is also known for making very tasty drinks like horchata and jamaica. La Raza Club leaders, Esmeralda Vargas Gutierrez and Ruby Estrada Contreras, want to thank everyone for joining the celebration and staying to watch the movie, Instructions Not Included. La Raza Club is dedicated to creating a close-knit community and provides events like this for all students to join and have fun. La Raza Club will be hosting a second feast on Thursday, December 8th, to celebrate the holiday season and the end of a very successful first semester with pupusas, a salvadorian dish, brought by Ruby Estrada.
Turkey Alternatives
By Katie Yeh & Blythe Jones
We know that turkey isn't everyone's favorite holiday food, so we have chosen the most popular turkey alternatives for your celebrations. A huge thanks to Mimi Wilson, who inspired this exploration of turkey alternatives!

Instead of eating your ordinary, run-of-the-mill turkey, Mimi’s family decided to do a combo meat dish: turkey, duck, and chicken (Turducken). The dish consists of a chicken stuffed into a duck, further stuffed into a turkey. It is known as a three-bird roast outside of the United States and Canada. The dish was popularized by American football player, John Madden, during the NFL Thanksgiving Games.

For our meat eaters, we have a couple of options for your palette. We suggest going for the Turducken. However, if you are in the mood for a more subtle taste, we recommend a classic roasted chicken, a honey-roasted ham, or, to spice it up, a duck! These are just some of the meat-iful options we suggest!
Now, while this next category is not for our friends with seafood allergies, we are huge fish fans! Some of our favorite seafood recommendations are pecan-crusted salmon with a honey dressing, a seafood platter not made for the faint of heart, and, certainly not least, King Crab! The crab doesn't have to be king, but it goes perfectly with a side of melted butter.

We understand that these holidays sometimes lacks a food-inclusive option for people with those pesky dietary restrictions. Fret not, for we have ideas for your vegan and vegetarian friends. First, hit it with some tofu or perhaps a tofu sandwich. Tofu is very versatile as you can add as many different toppings and sauces as you want. Another fun option is vegan turkey, and yup, you heard that right, folks, vegan. Fun fact: it's made out of mushrooms, as most vegan alternatives are! How fun is that?

Whether it is to spark your creativity, follow your dietary needs, or you are just not a turkey lover, we hope that these suggestions get your non-turkey-loving mind rolling. We hope you had fun following along on this turkey journey!
Black Friday Weekend at a Bookstore
By Katie Yeh & Jaden Luke
As Certified Booksellers™ at an undisclosed bookstore, we braced ourselves for a busy Black Friday Weekend. Only one of us had worked the previous Black Friday (Katie) while the other wasn’t scheduled (Jaden) last year, so we were only half prepared.

The store encounters strange things on a day-to-day basis (a woman throwing beer at employees, the homophobic “if I don’t get my order, people are going to die” man, and a barista having to dodge a fist, just to name a few) so we felt pretty accustomed to the bookselling lifestyle already. So, from experienced employees, here are four things we wish we knew to do while working during Black Friday Weekend:
1. STAY AWAY FROM THE REGISTERS. But if you can’t, be sure to grab a headset.
You do not want to be stuck at the registers when the customers start flooding in. You won’t get a chance to breathe, let alone escape with your dignity intact. Managers tend to put specific people at the cash registers, so if you’re one of them (like I am), GRAB A HEADSET. You never know when you need to call for backup. Customers tend to have a no-mercy attitude towards minimum-wage cashiers, so it’s best to just stay away from them in general. Joking, of course. –Jaden

2. Don't be afraid to ask questions!
A manager will most likely explain the current deals going on, but it doesn't hurt to read up and ask questions. The more you know, the better the experience is for both you and the customer! Of course, there is no crime in asking managers and other coworkers for help or advice. If there is anything that you are unsure of, it's better to ask than assume. The last thing you want to do on Black Friday is to hold up a line of customers. Even then, it's okay to make mistakes. Jaden and I get confused sometimes, and we have been working at undisclosed bookstore for over a year! –Katie

3. No matter what, don’t complain!
Although stoicism may seem too hard to uphold, customers (and managers) love stoics. Don’t show irritation or frustration! Keep those valid feelings deep down because you want to keep your job, right? You can’t risk a customer complaint or anger from your managers—working a customer service job is difficult enough. –Jaden

4. Take it easy and don't take anything personally…
As Jaden said, customers can be not so nice during the holiday season. I like to call it the anti-holiday spirit as they are often not happy to be shopping. If you have a bad customer interaction, that's okay! It's just another story under your belt for the many holiday parties to come. Don't be too hard on yourself, and remember to take a breather every now and then. –Katie
I think that it's safe to say that we have had our fair share of retail experiences. If you are looking to do a retail job or have one right now, we hope that you got a few things out of this article. As fellow retail workers, we are on your side! And as much of a joke article this is (kinda), don’t be afraid to show your friend, family member, or anyone that works in customer service some gratitude this holiday season. It’s tough work so to all those working retail, good luck this holiday season!
Winter Is Here!
Winter Drinks Review
By Mimi Wilson
It almost comes naturally to sit by the fire and drink eggnog or hot chocolate during the winter holidays. What other drinks are available to share with friends and family during this season? Four of my friends and I visited a couple of popular coffee shops to evaluate some of their holiday drinks. Starbucks is best known for its pumpkin-spice latte, but in December, it’s the Caramel Brulee Latte and the Apple Crisp Oat Milk Macchiato that take the spotlight.

The Caramel Brulee Latte tastes like a normal caramel frappuccino, which can be pleasing to customers who like something that tastes familiar. The only difference is that it’s hot and topped with crunchy caramel shavings. We rated it a 3.5 out of 5.
The Apple Crisp Oat Milk Macchiato was our least favorite drink we tried. It tastes like watered-down cinnamon apple-flavored oatmeal that was too sweet even for those with a sweet tooth, so we rated it a 1.5 out of 5.

The next stop was Peet’s Coffee! We ordered the Peppermint Mocha and were pleasantly surprised. The drink is a bit on the bitter side since it is made with dark chocolate. The richness of the chocolate and the slight hint of mint were a perfect match. Kylie Cheng said it was her favorite drink and we collectively rated it a 4.5 out of 5. We would totally recommend it!

The last coffee shop we went to was Phil’s Coffee and I had their hot chocolate. There isn’t much to say about it other than it doesn’t taste like the hot chocolate packets from the store. It’s not too sweet and not too bitter, and overall a good hot chocolate. I gave it a rating of 4/5. Make sure you try some of these delicious drinks during the holiday season!

Winter Sports
By Loralei Rohrbach
Diego Guzman

Diego Guzman is a right wingback for the San Mateo Bearcats boy’s varsity soccer team. Soccer has always been a part of Guzman’s life not only because his dad played and is an avid fan, but because soccer is a significant part of his culture. Except it wasn’t until the Morgan Hill tournament he played in the third grade that he realized soccer was something he was truly good at and should start taking seriously. The 2022-23 season is an important one for Guzman, as it is his first year on varsity and he has already taken a leading role on the team. As a junior, he can’t be named captain, yet he strives to embody the qualities a great captain needs: hard-working, leading by example, inspiring teammates, and most importantly stepping up when the team needs you. Most notably, in the Bearcats game against Mission San Francisco, he rallied the defense to play smart and hold Mission scoreless the entirety of the second half, allowing San Mateo to overcome the two-goal deficit they faced at halftime. Guzman and the team are looking to win the league and make playoffs, which they have “a high chance of achieving, with a roster filled with talented players”.
Annika Baldwin

Annika Baldwin is an outside back for the Hillsdale Knights girl’s varsity soccer team. Baldwin has been playing soccer for eight years, starting when she was a little girl on her first AYSO soccer team, and now entering her fifth year playing club soccer. Baldwin explained that because soccer has been a part of her life for so long, she has taken away invaluable lessons such as “growing to be more confident in [herself]”. Baldwin has always known that soccer was “her sport” because despite trying out other sports nothing compared to the way soccer “clears her mind” and allows her to “let go of all the stress [she] has from school or anything else”. Although she is just a junior, Baldwin plays an essential part on the team by being a team player who looks to support her teammates on and off the field. The Knights are hopeful looking ahead this season as they have a good team this year that has strong communication and plays as a cohesive unit.
La Raza Holiday Celebration
By Ruby Estrada
Happy Holidays! To celebrate the season and the end of a very successful first semester, La Raza Club hosted a small celebration on Thursday, December 8th, with Salvadorian pupusas and a movie to tie it all together. The pupusas were specially made by an authentic Salvadorian restaurant, America’s House. Esmeralda, La Raza’s co-president, also brought homemade guacamole and chips. The event brought the community together for one last celebration before starting finals next week. The leaders of the club, Esmeralda and Ruby, want to thank everyone for joining the celebration and for making La Raza Club possible. We wish everyone a happy holiday and good luck in finals! La Raza Club will continue to host similar events next semester and all Middle College students are invited to join us in creating a fun-filled club that appreciates Latin culture.

Wednesday Review
By Jaden Luke
On November 23rd, famed gothic-fantasy director Tim Burton brought The Addams back to our screens—or more specifically, Wednesday Addams—in his latest TV series. The first season of Wednesday aired on Netflix and included eight one-hour episodes starring Jenna Ortega as the lead.

Already knowing Burton for his films such as Corpse Bride (2005) and Beetlejuice (1988), it was no surprise that Wednesday crossed into the horror genre. Set at Nevermore Academy, gloomy and muted tones were ever-present; the macabre nature of the plot was never shied away from.

The series started off strong: Ortega embodied Wednesday’s serious and morbid personality right off the bat. Flanked by Emma Myers’ bright Enid Sinclair, the two became an unstoppable pair. And what would a teen Netflix show be without love interests? Wednesday’s love interests Tyler and Xavier played key roles in both the show and stealing the internet’s hearts. Christina Ricci, who portrayed Wednesday in The Addams Family (1991) even made a comeback as Ms. Thornhill, and Thing is the most likable hand you’ll ever come across. Other actors like Gwendoline Christie and Joy Sunday fantastically played their characters as well.

Yet, I would have to give the show a 3 on a 5-point scale for multiple reasons. As much as I hate to admit it, the more the show went on, the more it felt I was watching a Riverdale script. Some scenes were just so Netflix cliché (specifically the entirety of the last episode, which was such a letdown). Tyler and Wednesday’s relationship was developed as much as we saw Kent on screen (hint: Kent got little screen time), and Xavier and Wednesday’s relationship was lacking as well. Although a relationship between Wednesday and Enid is on the table for fans, Enid and Ajax had to be the only relationship of the show I truly liked.

There were a few other things I would change, like The Addams family itself. Catherine Zeta-Jones—as stunning as she is—just didn't seem like the right fit for Morticia. Isaac Ordonez looked like Pugsley, but was too in tune with emotions. Ortega was a great choice, but her character (for lack of a better term) sucked at solving the mystery of the “Monster in the Woods”, pointing fingers at anyone she could until the last second of the show while showing a little more than I expected.

Although I have my complaints, the series is definitely worth watching. The hour-long episodes go by faster than you would think, especially if you’re into mystery and/or teen shows. And if my review scared you away, start for the Edgar Allen Poe references in the episode titles!
Benefits of Transferring from CSM
By Devin Gowdy
As college application season comes to an end and Juniors start to think about where they want to go after high school, it's important to recognize the different opportunities available to us. One of the best opportunities is transferring to a 4-year university from CSM. As Middle College students, we have completed anywhere from 24 to 44 transferable credits by the time we graduate which means we can transfer out of CSM in 1-2 years. Even though many students might want to go into college as freshmen, applying as a transfer student has significant benefits worth taking into strong consideration.

Ms. B says choosing to stay at CSM can be a major “stress reducer” for students who aren’t ready to be away from home. Jumping directly from high school to a university can sometimes be a difficult transition and choosing to transfer can help ease students into the demands of college. According to Ms. B, it is “easier to connect with support systems” at CSM, whether it be through EOP, Promise, or any of the many clubs on campus, building your network early can be very beneficial.

As many Seniors understand, the college application process can be another major source of stress. For students who feel like their resume is not the best it could be, staying at CSM is a way to build your resume further. It can also be an opportunity to take more classes to help you decide on your major, which can often be a difficult decision to make as a high schooler.

The guaranteed transfer contracts available to transfer students could alleviate the stress of college applications even further. By completing the IGETC through 60 college units, you are able to do a Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) to one of the six participating UCs of your choice. CSUs and some private schools have similar programs, including Saint Mary's and Santa Clara University.

The last and probably the most important benefit is the money that you can save. It is no question that attending a 4-year university is expensive, even after financial aid. Since college is free for San Mateo County residents starting in the spring of 2023, transferring significantly reduces the costs of attending a university. By transferring, you will only have to pay about 50% of what you would have paid if you went straight into a university as a freshman.

While many people might see transferring as a second-rate option, it is a really great opportunity that all Middle College students should look into.

We hope you guys had a great semester and we
wish you the best winter break!
