CONGRATULATIONS!!
-- Middle College --
Class of 2021
Who were you when you arrived at MC?
Who are you as you leave?
For those of you who were there...
It was SO great to see all of your faces in person. We took over two theaters and saw Kong vs. Godzilla, which was a surprise to (well)... most of us. We were provided with (huge!) bowls of popcorn and unlimited soda! Students were enacting social distancing by sitting every other seat, but getting the cozy experience of sitting in reclining chairs ;)
...And for those who couldn't join, we missed you!
Even though this was our last MC community event of the year...
It was a great turnout to everyone who was there. Thank you to everyone who practiced social distancing and spread their laughter and smiles across campus. Whether you were singing karaoke, dancing, tie-dying, playing baseball or volleyball, or just hanging and talking with friends, it was so nice to see how all of you have been staying in touch with one another AND to welcome those of you that decided to mingle with another group for the first time. :)

Words of Wisdom to Rising Seniors:
Front-load most of your work first semester and not second semester!
Think about your career path NOW. You don't want to switch majors often.
Do not procrastinate or senior apps or projects... you WILL regret it!!
Take any chance you get to grow as a person academically and personally and get as much help as you can before going off to college.
Manage your time well.
Enjoy your senior year and don't rush to graduation.
Don’t sweat the small stuff! If there’s anything this year proved is that you are capable of doing great things even in a world wide pandemic.
You’re going to do amazing!
Don't cave to what people expect you to believe. Ask questions and ponder them in your heart. Value truth.
Don’t slack off!!!
Expect the unexpected.
Life can be hard, but you don't have to bear it alone.
The professor makes the class, not vice versa. Choose wisely.
Don't sleep on your college applications and don't be afraid to get help!
Good luck!!!
Words of Wisdom to Incoming Juniors:
Enjoy your junior year. Get involved in the community.
Welcome to the family!
Have fun it will make your year less hectic.
Don't Procrastinate!!
Have fun... it will make your year less hectic.
Enjoy it and get a job if you want and join clubs or after school activities that you are genuinely interested in. You only have two more years left and it goes by so fast - you’ve no idea!
Put yourself out there, this is an amazing community.
Enjoy exploring and don't focus too much on simply getting ahead... but make sure to stay on track.
Be the person you couldn't be at your home school.
Do your best; be honest.
Make bookmarks to important links and logins. No need to type in google every time. Learn keyboard shortcuts for your browser and your operating system to be efficient.
Enjoy exploring and don’t focus too much on simply getting ahead but make sure to stay on track.
Now is the time to try new things and figure out what classes you like and don't like. If you make a mistake, it's really easy to grow from it.
One thing you will miss about zoom classes...
Not being perceived
Not having to take the bus to school. Using Snap Camera for PC / Mac to play with effects for the facecam.
Being able to watch a recording of my math classes to relearn material.
Sleeping in.
Being able to interact and have discussions with everyone.
Convenience.
Being able to sleep, eat, and be in bed while in class.
Being in bed and on zoom and in sweats.
You don't have to get up as early.
Sleeping through them :)
Being able to chat reactions to the teacher's lecture.
Watching professors and teachers figure out technology lol
The freedom of doing school work at home.
Having one-on-one time with my teachers.
The breakout rooms and still getting to see everyone even though it was on screen.
One thing you are NOT going to miss...
Looking at my screen for hours.
Breakout rooms where people don't say a damn thing
People not showing their faces or saying anything. It destroys the classroom environment.
Much less communication between classmates and teachers than in-person learning.
Going into breakout rooms and being met with only awkward silence.
Forcing myself to talk and participate with/without my camera on.
Turning my camera on.
The migraines.
Everyone's cameras being turned off :(
Screens with only names on them during zoom calls.
Not being able to pay attention which leads to struggling in class.
Not being with my friends.
How you want to be remembered by the MC community?
Any unique end of the year celebrations?
Reuniting with my friend group after a long year :)
Eating a yummy dinner with my family.
A personal Grad Night with my friends :D
There may be a family get-together at the end of my school year later down the line.
A couple of small grad parties with friends.
Video games and cherry pie.
Getting a Rode NT1 microphone and a guitar. More opportunities to explore music.
My friend and I had our own DIY prom/general celebration for senior year.
Who says we can't have our first and last senior prom? Hannah Levine, Brianna Rubenchcek, Lawrence Kupfer, and (a past MC student) Jonathan Ubau decided it would be so beneficial and so much fun to create our own mini prom on WHEELS. This prom was incredibly unique because we had rented a party bus for 4 hours... drove to a nice Italian restaurant in San Francisco and took pictures all over. Here are just a few :)

Chocolate-Covered Cake Balls
Makes 4 dozen
Ingredients:
- Cooking spray
- 1 box cake mix, plus ingredients called for on the box
- 3/4 c. (1 1/2 sticks butter), softened
- 3 c. powdered sugar
- 3 tbsp. heavy cream
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- Pinch kosher salt
- 2 c. white chocolate chips
- 2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 4 tbsp. coconut oil, divided
- Sprinkles, for decorating
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9”-x-13” baking pan with cooking spray. Prepare cake mix according to box instructions and spread evenly into prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Let cool then break the cake into small crumbs.
- In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter until smooth, then add sugar and beat until combined. Add cream, vanilla, and salt and mix until smooth. (Add more cream if frosting is too thick.)
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Stir cake crumbs into the frosting, then form mixture into tablespoon-sized balls. Place on a prepared baking sheet and refrigerate until firm, 1 hour.
- In a deep-sided heatproof bowl, microwave white chocolate and 2 tablespoons coconut oil in 30-second intervals until melted. Repeat the process with semisweet chocolate.
- Dip chilled cake balls into melted chocolate, shaking off excess chocolate. Immediately decorate with sprinkles and return to the baking sheet. Refrigerate until hardened, 15 minutes.
- ENJOY!!

Ingredients:
- 1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated sugar cookies
- 3 tablespoons pastel-colored candy sprinkles
- 1/2 cup white vanilla baking chips, melted
Instructions:
- Heat oven to 350°F. Line 8-inch square pan with cooking parchment paper, leaving edges hanging over slightly for easy removal later.
- In a medium bowl, break up 1 roll (16.5 oz) Pillsbury™ refrigerated sugar cookies; knead in 2 tablespoons pastel-colored candy sprinkles until well blended. Press mixture in pan.
3. Bake 20 to 23 minutes or until set and edges are golden brown. Cool completely in pan on a cooling rack, about 1 hour.
4. Remove from pan by lifting edges of parchment paper. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows; drizzle with 1/2 cup white vanilla baking chips, melted. Immediately sprinkle with 1 tablespoon pastel-colored candy sprinkles.
Expert Tips:
- Stir in 1/2 cup candy-coated chocolate candies (in addition to the sprinkles) into the cookie dough for an extra colorful treat.
- To get the perfect drizzle, spoon melted chips into a resealable food-storage plastic bag. Snip off a small corner of the bag, then squeeze to drizzle on top of bars.
- These easy bars make for a great treat to bring to a potluck or party! Simply pack fully cooled, cut, and decorated bars into an airtight container before you head out the door to your destination.

Dear Middle College,
First, I want to say that we are so proud of all of you for making the best out of the pandemic. Seniors - this is it! We are now graduates, and it’s definitely a little emotional that this whole experience is coming to an end. But the next chapters of our lives are starting, and that is so exciting! We know all you seniors will achieve greatness in whatever you choose to do in your lives! Juniors, you all are about to be seniors, and thank god the pandemic is getting better, so hopefully, you are able to get a real senior year experience. Last year there was no graduation, and this year we are incredibly lucky to have in-person graduation. That is something that should not be taken for granted. No matter how it happened, we should feel good that WE DID IT! And we all did it in an amazing way; and we could not have done it without all the Middle College teachers, Mr. Lance, Mr. Lien, Mr. Burke, Redgate, Mrs. Rohrbach, and Mr. Letke! And a special thank you to Angela who is the best at helping students with school-related things and honestly, just a really cool person to talk to. Thank you to Mr. Scatena for being a part of organizing graduation and some of the other events we’ve had. You're the best! And of course, thank you to Mr. Morales for helping our seniors with their applications and juniors with class schedules. Remember to treat people the way you want to be treated and being kind to everyone and yourself; the best thing you can do to put a smile on someone’s face and it’s always important to make time to do what you love because, at the end of the day you will always have yourself. You all are going to do some great things in the world, and we can’t wait to see it! Remember to enjoy your last few days as a High School student and a Middle College student. We wish you all the best!
We hope you have enjoyed this past year's newsletters and wish the future Newsletter Team the best of luck with their creativity and success in the future!
Have a wonderful Summer everyone, and BE SAFE!
