The eighth graders are proudly making the middle school their own, based on the theme for the year they chose last year. They chose Nickelodeon and are transforming the building into their favorite TV shows. The pod is looking very much like a SpongeBob undersea paradise these days and we look forward to seeing their finished work before long!

Los estudiantes de octavo grado están orgullosamente haciendo de la escuela intermedia su propia escuela, basada en el tema para el año que eligieron el año pasado. Eligieron Nickelodeon y están transformando el edificio en sus programas de televisión favoritos. La vaina se parece mucho a un paraíso submarino Bob Esponja en estos días y esperamos ver su trabajo terminado en poco tiempo!

Students in Mr. Boyes class participated in a “About Me Show and Tell” that focused on their favorite foods from their culture. Each student including Mr. Boyes shared why and what about their food. We had a great time sharing and tasting different culture foods while learning together.

Los estudiantes de la clase del Sr. Boyes participaron en un "Acerca de mí Mostrar y contar" que se centró en sus comidas favoritas de su cultura. Cada estudiante, incluido el Sr. Boyes, compartió por qué y qué pasa con su comida. Lo pasamos muy bien compartiendo y probando comidas de diferentes culturas mientras aprendíamos juntos.

Last year students in Keila Simos’ Responsive Advisory Meeting and ASL classes led the department in creating a community quilt.  Almost all students in the department last year participated in sewing (current 7th-9th graders).  The quilt was entered in the recent CAL-ED conference art exhibit September 30 - October 2 and took home first place!

El año pasado, los estudiantes de la reunión consultiva receptiva de Keila Simos y las clases de ASL dirigieron al departamento en la creación de una colcha comunitaria. Casi todos los estudiantes del departamento el año pasado participaron en costura (estudiantes actuales de 7º a 9º grado). ¡La colcha se inscribió en la reciente exhibición de arte de la conferencia CAL-ED del 30 de septiembre al 2 de octubre y se llevó a casa el primer lugar!

Students are working hard on their ASL storytelling skills as they gear up for upcoming annual National Literary Competition from Gallaudet University Youth Program.  (pictures taken from several periods covering different assignments and classwork).

Also, for the first time, we are excited about the ASL Immersion class being started up, which is designed to meet some students’ unique ASL needs.

Los estudiantes están trabajando arduamente en sus habilidades de narración de cuentos en ASL mientras se preparan para la próxima Competencia Literaria Nacional anual del Programa Juvenil de la Universidad de Gallaudet. Además, por primera vez, estamos entusiasmados con el inicio de la clase de inmersión en ASL, que está diseñada para satisfacer las necesidades únicas de ASL de algunos estudiantes.

6th graders reviewing the rules of safety in the lab and the fire triangle (oxygen, heat, and fuel) with an experiment of extinguishing a candle flame by creating carbon dioxide (CO2), which cuts off oxygen (O2).

7th grade students practiced the scientific method by observing a prototype rocket, asking questions, coming up with a hypothesis on making a rocket that will fly at least 20 meters, then they experimented on their own rocket trying to improve the distance of the rocket. Making the rockets covered the basics of STEAM, Science,Technology, Engineering, Art, and math.

Estudiantes de sexto grado revisando las reglas de seguridad en el laboratorio y el triángulo del fuego (oxígeno, calor y combustible) con un experimento de apagar la llama de una vela creando dióxido de carbono (CO2), que corta el oxígeno (O2).

Los estudiantes de 7º grado practicaron el método científico observando un prototipo de cohete, haciendo preguntas, presentando una hipótesis sobre cómo hacer un cohete que volará al menos 20 metros, luego experimentaron en su propio cohete tratando de mejorar la distancia del cohete. Hacer los cohetes cubrió los conceptos básicos de STEAM, ciencia, tecnología, ingeniería, arte y matemáticas.

Battle of the Books has officially started.  On Friday, September 30th, there was an informational meeting with players and chaperones and books were distributed.  Preliminary games are in November! 

La Batalla de los Libros ha comenzado oficialmente. El viernes 30 de septiembre hubo una reunión informativa con jugadores y chaperones y se repartieron libros. ¡Los juegos preliminares son en noviembre!

A social scientist does many things, and one of the things they do is investigate the past. They look for clues as to where ancient settlements were. They meticulously document where their discoveries are located on maps and detailed drawings. Some of our students got a taste of that by watching a video of the unveiling of the new eagle statue by the football field and figuring out where it was, locating it precisely on a map of the campus, and going to find it. 

Un científico social hace muchas cosas, y una de las cosas que hace es investigar el pasado. Buscan pistas sobre dónde estaban los antiguos asentamientos. Documentan meticulosamente dónde se encuentran sus descubrimientos en mapas y dibujos detallados. Algunos de nuestros estudiantes probaron eso al ver un video de la inauguración de la nueva estatua del águila en el campo de fútbol y averiguar dónde estaba, ubicarla con precisión en un mapa del campus e ir a buscarla.

This in-class competition called Book Battles (BB) is a clever wordplay on the nationwide literary competition, Battle of the Books (BOTB). Two classes in the sixth grade are reading the same book called New Kid by author & illustrator Jerry Craft. The purpose of this fun activity is to prepare students as well as give them a taste of the real competition. Winners and participants with excellent sportsmanship receive a small but highly desired prize!

Esta competencia en clase llamada Book Battles (BB) es un ingenioso juego de palabras sobre la competencia literaria nacional, Battle of the Books (BOTB). Dos clases de sexto grado están leyendo el mismo libro llamado New Kid del autor e ilustrador Jerry Craft. El propósito de esta divertida actividad es preparar a los estudiantes y darles una idea de la competencia real. ¡Los ganadores y participantes con excelente deportividad reciben un premio pequeño pero muy deseado!

Our 6th, 7th, 8th grade students made posters displaying their different identities and added that they are mathematicians too. Also, students are working hard to meet their target specific learning goals on IXL. 

Nuestros alumnos de 6º, 7º y 8º grado hicieron carteles mostrando sus diferentes identidades y agregaron que ellos también son matemáticos. Además, los estudiantes están trabajando arduamente para alcanzar sus objetivos de aprendizaje específicos en IXL.

This year 6th graders are taking Career Awareness- Social Emotional Learning class where they are learning work and life skills to help them prepare for their future. On Fridays, students work together in a team-building activity where they learn how to communicate and problem-solve.

Este año, los estudiantes de sexto grado están tomando la clase de Concienciación profesional- Aprendizaje socioemocional, donde están aprendiendo habilidades laborales y de vida para ayudarlos a prepararse para su futuro. Los viernes, los estudiantes trabajan juntos en una actividad de formación de equipos en la que aprenden a comunicarse y resolver problemas.
