Middle School Newsletter I January 19, 2024

Dear MS Families,

It has been a very calm, productive, yet short week at Roycemore MS after the cancellation on Friday and the synchronous learning day on Tuesday following the long holiday weekend. I am so proud of how the students and teachers quickly pivoted, planned, and participated in our synchronous learning day on Tuesday, January 16th. The students showed up and were fully engaged during their virtual lessons! Way to go, teachers & students!

Below you will see the spotlight on 7th grader, Sojo Fitz-Green. Parents and students, there is nothing I enjoy more than celebrating the achievements of our students. If your child is involved in something amazing in their time away from school, please forward that information to me for inclusion in this weekly newsletter.

In partnership.

Adrienne

Roycemore MS Division Head

Sojo Fitz-Green (7th Grade) won the Las Vegas Cup last weekend with her soccer team, United Elite. Every game was incredibly close, and they won the last three games in penalty shootouts!

Sojo started soccer at three years old when her parents signed her up for a program called Little Kickers. She's loved the "beautiful game" ever since then.

United Elite pulls players from five different clubs: F.C. Lakeshore (which Sojo plays for), Michigan Rangers F.C., Plainfield United, Chicagoland United, and the Naperville Soccer Academy. They invite kids from each of those clubs to go to a three-day overnight soccer academy each summer. About 15 kids from the academy then get to go to a soccer tournament somewhere else in the United States. United Elite only plays together once a year for that tournament; the rest of the year kids play with their regular club team. Sojo's team plays in the 2011 age bracket.

Sojo wants to continue soccer through college and then maybe do something that is related to sports as a profession, but not necessarily be a professional athlete. For example, she could see being a sports lawyer advocating for players or even the commissioner of the National Women's Soccer League. Way to go, Sojo!

I am thrilled to share exciting updates from our Physical Education department! Our middle school students have successfully concluded their badminton units and are gearing up for an energetic shift to floor hockey upon my return from knee surgery.

In the interim, Coach Hollie has been leading a second dose of a basketball unit, seamlessly stepping in for Coach Fawbush. Welcome, Coach Hollie! You may remember Coach Hollie as the cover for Coach B during her time away on parental leave.

The badminton unit was a hit again this year among our Griffins, featuring thrilling matchups in the final stretch of tournaments, so much so that students have sought out badminton by requesting equipment during recess and free time.

Looking ahead, I’m so excited for the upcoming floor hockey unit. Despite the unique challenge of teaching on crutches due to my recovery, I am optimistic that this will be a memorable and successful unit for all. The focus will be on building coordination, team building, offensive and defensive strategies, and overall conditioning.

Thank you for your continued support, and I can't wait to see the growth and success our students achieve in the upcoming quarter! Palio is right around the corner as well and we can’t wait to see what Ms. Wunder has up her sleeves for this year’s show!

Keep moving forward,

Coach Fawbush
