SEEKING RN/RPN CHAMPIONS TO MODERATE A FACEBOOK GROUP

The MLOHT and London Middlesex Primary Care Alliance (LMPCA) are currently working on a project to improve access to primary care in the Middlesex London area by empowering healthcare workers to work to their scope of practice.

We are currently looking for 1 - 2 dedicated volunteer Registered Nurses/ Registered Practical Nurses to create, moderate, and lead a Facebook group for RNs/RPNs in the Middlesex London area. This Facebook group aims at enhancing our healthcare staff's interaction and communication.

The key responsibilities of moderator(s) will include:

• Creating the Facebook Group: Setting up a user-friendly Facebook group page for RNs in the Middlesex London area.
• Moderation and Member Engagement: ensuring a positive and respectful online environment by moderating discussions, encouraging active participation, and fostering a sense of community. The MLOHT will support the moderator by providing timely content regarding related upcoming workshops/events, certifications, and other related updates. This collaborative effort ensures that our community stays well-informed and can take full advantage of the educational opportunities available.

We are excited about the potential of this Facebook group to bring our healthcare workers closer together and enhance the communication among them. If you know any RN and/or RPN who might be interested in this role, please feel free to forward this request to them and email Hanadi Al Sadek.

IMMIGRANT AND REFUGEE MENTAL HEALTH LEADERSHIP COURSE

The Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Project (IRMHP), funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), is offering a free, online course for leaders who are committed to understanding immigrant and refugee mental health and who lead staff working with immigrants and refugees in Canada. This includes organizations in the health, settlement and social service sectors.

Course goals:

• Improve your knowledge about the mental health needs of immigrants and refugees and understand the supports newcomers require.
• Introduce organizational strategies that support and improve mental health for immigrants and refugees.
• Develop appropriate policies related to immigrant and refugee mental health.
• Ensure a supportive work environment for staff as they promote the mental health of immigrants and refugees.

Course details: 

• Date: October 23 - December 4, 2023
• For who: boards of directors, leaders, and managers in the health, settlement and social service sectors
• Estimated time: 3 hours total to complete; content available for a 6 week period.

COLLABORATIVE AGING - EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS FOR OLDER ADULTS

Collaborative Aging offers educational workshops for older adults (and their caregivers) to help them make informed and proactive plans + arrangements for healthy aging in place. The content of these workshops is based on a practical, evidence-based guide written in 2020, and updated annually.  

Options Open: The Guide for Mapping Your Best Aging Journey (c) is a workbook style of guide, with ideas, resources, and self-reflection tools to help readers identify their own vision for aging in place, and then arranging the right supports to enable them to achieve their goals. This evidence-based material "brings to life" the best health and social research including AFC Planning principles in a way that is more actionable, at the individual level. 

In terms of the educational offerings, they provide three types of talks or workshops:  

• The "Options Open" Five-Part Workshop Series on each of the Five-Strategies within the Guide (1) Health (2) Housing (3) Social Connections/Networks (4) Caregiving Teams (5) Resources 
• A Plenary Presentation - (1 hour) that provides an overview of the key concepts in the OPTIONS OPEN guide (at virtual and in-person conferences) 
• Facilitated conversations with community members (e.g. at a public library, municipal location, or a local charity or organization) or with pre-existing groups of people (e.g. a book club).

As part of the Guelph Wellington Ontario Health Team's Anti-Oppression training plan, a two-part training series has been developed in partnership with Michael Etherington, an Indigenous relations consultant. 

The two-part training is an opportunity for Ontario Health Teams (OHTs) to engage in Indigenous-specific learning that is focused on advancing knowledge and understanding regarding reconciliation in the workplace. The content is divided into three parts discussing the individual (self-awareness), interpersonal (cross-cultural), and organizational (strategic priorities), components as a pathway for reconciliation.

The training aims to educate and promote historical literacy and key markers regarding Indigenous Peoples in Canada in urban, remote, and rural spaces in historical and contemporary contexts. A template will be provided to help OHTs draft a statement of reconciliation for their OHT as well as resources for considering how to bring action to their statements.

The Introduction to Anti-Black Racism eLearning Module is an informative and engaging module that is designed to support health service providers and their learners, staff, and physicians in their Anti-Black Racism learning journey. The module offers Anti-Black Racism education that provides:

• An introduction to the historical roots and ongoing legacy of Anti-Black Racism in Canada
• Insight into the forms that Anti-Black Racism can take in people’s lives
• Opportunities for reflection and/or discussion on how to address Anti-Black Racism in work and personal life.

For health service providers, the module provides organizations with the opportunity to:

• Offer foundational education that facilitates and encourages continued learning and unlearning
• Implement strategies to utilize the module as a complimentary and/or mandatory resource to support new or existing Anti-Racism and/or Anti-Black Racism education.

CERVICAL SCREENING TRAINING FOR NURSES & PHYSICIANS IN PRIMARY CARE

The South West Regional Cancer Program, in conjunction with the Central East Regional Cancer Program, is offering its second in-person, hands on learning session to provide nurses & physicians working in primary care settings with the knowledge and skills to carry out cervical screening that adheres to Ontario’s cervical screening guidelines.

The education will be provided by Dr. Rob DiCecco, Regional Cervical Screening and Colposcopy Lead in the South West, in conjunction with Dr. Nathan Roth, Regional Cervical Screening and Colposcopy Lead in the Central East. The session will include didactic learning and medical simulation training.

The training will be held at the London Middlesex Health Unit, located at CitiPlaza in London, Ontario. Lunch included. The cost of the session is $100.

UNITED WAY ELGIN MIDDLESEX (UWEM) COMMUNITY FUND GRANT

United Way Elgin Middlesex has launched the Community Fund Grant program for 2024-2026. 

The UWEM Community Fund model is designed to prioritize poverty reduction and prevention programs as well as to increase funding opportunities to organizations and programs that serve equity-seeking populations who are disproportionately affected by social challenges in our region. As part of its ongoing work to dismantle systems of racism and oppression in our region, the UWEM funding model is intended to be more inclusive and is open to all registered charities and qualified donees meeting stated criteria.

Organizations must be providing service in Elgin Middlesex and preference will be given to organizations located in Elgin Middlesex. Organizations can apply for grants to support one or two programs at up to $200,000 each. A maximum amount of $400,000 in grants is available to a single organization.

The application process is open from Monday, October 2 until Friday, November 3 at 12:00 pm, and grants will be provided for a period of 2 years. 

Funding agreements will start April 1, 2024 and end March 31, 2026.
