Police Promotions

The Police Department is very excited to announce the promotion of several new sergeants and lieutenants! On October 17th, five members of the Department appeared in front of family, friends, and the public to officially assume their new positions. Stephen Foreman and Peter Feeney were promoted to lieutenant while Mark McLeod, Zachary Brosious, and Benjamin Cook became sergeants.

The Township congratulates them on their promotions and looks forward to their many accomplishments ahead. Chief Joe Bartorilla closed his remarks to the officers by expressing his anticipation of a bright future: "As chief, I am very proud of you and excited for the next chapter in this Department."

Streetlight Upgrade

On September 17th, the Board of Supervisors passed two resolutions that moved the Township's streetlight upgrade one step closer to installation.

As described in detail in the May E-News, the Township joined a group effort of forty municipalities to replace streetlights with LED fixtures. LEDs are a newer, more efficient technology than the lights currently in place. Residents will see a better quality light that requires less maintenance and reduces energy costs.

Throughout the summer, the vendor, Johnson Controls, Inc. (JCI), audited the Township's entire inventory of streetlights, marking every location, type, wattage, and condition. In total, over 1,700 cobra head lights and 1,000 decorative streetlights will be replaced. While the total project cost is about $1.2 million, JCI has guaranteed the Township's energy savings at over $1.6 million over a twenty-year period. Combined with projected maintenance savings, the Township will be able to pay off the entire project using savings from the upgrade within eleven years. Over the twenty years of the guaranteed savings, the Township will see a net gain of more than $1.1 million.

As the Board of Supervisors approved the final scope of the project and authorized the program agreement with JCI, the Township will soon complete a low-interest financing agreement in preparation for the beginning of construction. Next year, JCI will begin installing the cobra head fixtures, and Township staff will install the decorative lights. More updates will follow as the program moves into its construction phase and residents start to enjoy better street lighting.

Spring Valley Farm Master Plan

Middletown Township and the Parks and Recreation Department are completing a Master Site Plan for the Spring Valley Farm. This 10-plus acre property was acquired by the Township in 2013. Throughout this year, the Township has partnered with Stomberg, Garrigan & Associates and Toole Recreation Planning to develop, with input from residents, a long-term plan for the future of this preserved space.

At the recent Board of Supervisors meeting, representatives of these two consultants presented their final draft plan to the public. With heavy resident input, the plan focuses on passive recreation and contains the following key suggestions:
  • Walking, biking, and nature trails
  • Preserved open space and landscape management to include removal of invasive species and restoration of native species
  • Removal of the fence bordering the Penndel Borough baseball field
  • A large, flat lawn area to support formal and informal gatherings
  • An amphitheater for concerts and events
  • Access to the farmhouse and creation of a surrounding picnic area
The final draft is available for the public to view online, and residents may send comments to Parks and Recreation Director Debby Lamanna.
Beautification Day

Fall Beautification Day is almost here! On October 29th, join your neighbors and the Middletown Beautification Committee as they clean up along Bristol-Oxford Valley Road. Volunteers are still being recruited. All interested in helping should contact Patrick Graham for volunteer information. Thank you for keeping this community a beautiful place!

Fall Service Saturday

The Middletown Citizen Service Corps (MCSC) Fall Service Saturday returns on November 12th. Community organizations, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to volunteer to help their neighbors with simple tasks that can prove challenging for the elderly and those with disabilities.

Fire Prevention Month

October is Fire Prevention Month, and the Fire Marshal's Office wants to make sure you and your families are safe from the dangers of fires.

Throughout the month of October, members of the Fire Marshal staff and local fire companies have visited every elementary school and most day cares in the Township to teach children about the importance of fire safety. Staff used videos and activities to teach children essential lessons of fire prevention, such as staying away from matches and lighters. Children were also taught to identify hot surfaces and instructed to avoid placing objects in places where they can catch fire. After the lesson, children would go outside where they would get to meet fire fighters and explore a fire truck.

The Fire Marshal's Office also participated in several events where they taught residents how to check smoke detectors, use fire extinguishers and hoses, and other ways to prevent fires. These included four fire department open houses, a Boy Scout Night, and Public Safety Day at Oxford Valley Mall. Lastly, they participated in Home Escape Plan Day where families were given materials to help them create a plan for leaving their homes during a fire or emergency.
