Hurricane Ida Disaster Assistance Available

On Wednesday, September 1st, the remnants of Hurricane Ida swept through our area and left a path of destruction including fallen trees, washed out roads, and high flood waters.

Our local first responders were hard at work to keep residents safe and were able to rescue everyone who was trapped either in their vehicles or their homes during the height of flooding.

The department of Public Works has been working hard to clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Ida. Silver Lake Road sustained extensive damage. Emergency repairs were completed this week and the road is now open. which was the last road to be opened due to extensive damage and needed partial reconstruction.
Federal disaster assistance from FEMA is now available to homeowners and renters whose homes, vehicles or personal property were damaged. The assistance may include grants for home repairs and temporary housing, loans to cover uninsured property losses and programs to help individuals and business owners recover from damages, according to FEMA.

When registering for assistance you will need to have the following available:
  • Your address with zip code
  • Directions to your property
  • Condition of your damaged home
  • Insurance information, if available

Adoption of Climate Action Plan Scheduled for Monday, September 20th

The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors preliminarily approved the Middletown Township Climate Action Plan on August 16th and final adoption is scheduled for Monday, September 20th, 2021.

The Climate Action Plan a strategic and measured approach toward reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions community-wide.

 The mission of the Middletown Township Local Climate Action Plan is to create an environmentally friendly future that improves the quality of life by promoting environmental sustainability to residents, businesses, and the community.

 As a Certified Gold Sustainable Community, Middletown Township would become the first municipality in Bucks County to adopt a local Climate Action Plan.  This Climate Action Plan was developed through participation in the Local Climate Action Program, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection at no cost to the Township.  Students and faculty from Wilkes University and ICLEI, an environmental consulting firm, assisted in the development of the Township's Climate Action Plan. The Township's Climate Action Plan directly supports and mobilizes three of the four areas in the Township's 2020 Comprehensive Plan.

The Climate Action Plan outlines 63 activities, ranging from programs and strategic partnerships, to information campaigns and policy changes. Some of the recommended activities include walkability improvements to create better access to public transportation routes, to providing tailored information to homeowners and businesses about how they can take small steps toward reducing water and utility usage.

The Board of Supervisors will be adopting the plan at the meeting on September 20th.  Adoption of the plan, is only the plan. All policies and programs discussed in the plan will be addressed individually at a later time.

Stormwater Management for Swimming Pools and Spas

Although we enjoy our backyard swimming pools and spas, draining water from them can harm our local creeks and streams if not done properly. Pollutants such as chlorine and other chemicals are harmful to aquatic wildlife, our waterways and the environment. When swimming pools or spas are drained into the stormwater system, this discharge goes directly to our local creeks and streams without being treated to remove pollutants.

The best management practice for pool water and spa discharge is to de-chlorinate and drain it into landscaping or other areas that allows the water to be absorbed and percolated into the ground. Water can also be drained into the sanitary sewer system through a legal sewer connection or clean-out. It is easy to eliminate chlorine levels to order to safely discharge swimming pool or spa water. Chlorine naturally dissipates over time. Test chlorine levels in the pool over a period of 3 to 5 days, without adding any additional chlorine to your pool or spa until the chlorine registers zero when using your test kit. When it reaches zero, you can then drain the water using the guidelines listed above before algae starts to grow.

Draining to landscaping or the sanitary sewer system is the preferred way to discharge swimming pool or spa water, but if necessary, it can be drained to the storm drain system ONLY if the water:
  • Has no chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, acid, saline (salt), or other chemicals;
  • pH level is between "7"-"8";
  • Has no algae or harmful bacteria or is green in color;
  • Has no dirt, debris, or vegetation;
  • Is discharged slowly to not create sediment erosion or traffic hazards.
