Midland Streetscape Project Update December 10, 2024

Midland Milestone!

The Midland Streetscape project will reach substantial completion by the end of 2024, on time and on budget, due to our phenomenal team of designers, engineers, and construction professionals. This is a true milestone and a reason to celebrate downtown Basalt’s largest infrastructure project designed to promote business and community vitality through safer, more environmentally sensitive features, and encourage retail activity, social connection, and gathering.

The Midland Streetscape Project is the fruition of a vision that began more than a dozen years ago when downtown businesses were moving to Willits and continued vitality for historic downtown became a voiced concern for residents, businesses, and elected officials. The Midland Streetscape was identified as a priority project in the 2020 Basalt Master Plan. The project was approved by voters in 2021.

The Midland Streetscape project brings resiliency into crucial infrastructure as well as leverages Basalt’s unique community assets connecting the historic district and the Basalt River Park to promote community events and tourism.

The Midland Streetscape design creates more access for people of all ages and backgrounds to gather and enjoy the Sunday Market, Wednesday night concerts, homecoming parades, art walks, Motors on Midland, and endless new opportunities as well as our unique businesses, shops and restaurants.

The new infrastructure provides more reliable water, sewer, stormwater, gas, electric, and communications networks while being designed to improve snow and ice runoff, to filter stormwater runoff, and to create ways to treat runoff in strategically placed rain gardens.

With all the major underground work completed, and only a few remaining project elements for 2025, it is time to celebrate what the community supported and championed from idea to reality.

2025 Midland Streetscape Work

Next year the Midland Streetscape team will put the finishing touches on the project.. The work that remains includes small sections of paving, final landscaping, and streetlight installation, including the catenary lights. We look forward to final completion in spring 2025.
