Dear Members and Friends,

When I travel out of RVA, I enjoy visiting gyms and fitness studios in other cities, to scout out new ideas and to experience what is happening in other areas of our country.  On a recent trip to Chicago, I visited several cycling studios including Soul Cycle, Studio Three and Fly Wheel.  In one particular class, the young, super fit instructor, who was energetic and friendly, and who provided a challenging and purposeful workout, talked and coached repeatedly about breaking out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself harder in order to create change, which is admittedly all good stuff.  She talked about not doing the same thing every day, as change only results from new challenges, also good stuff.  She was definitely a qualified and capable instructor, and I enjoyed her class.  However, something interesting happened after class when I stopped at the juice bar to get a drink.  A gentleman from class, I estimated to be in his 70s and who was also de-conditioned and heavy-set, started to chat with me.  He used the bike directly behind me during class, and I assume he recognized me from our class positions. He said, "Some of us are not here for change.  Some of us are here just trying to stay alive."  He made the remark in a joking and friendly manner, almost as if he was explaining or even excusing his presence in a room full of younger, fitter people.  This got me to thinking, "Why did he feel the need to explain or even justify his participation in class?" He should feel welcome, no matter the reason. I do think the instructor, with her regular remarks about working hard for change, had somewhat (unintentionally) alienated this particular participant. And so, I wish to share with you, our MAC members, I hope that you, no matter your fitness level, age or weight, feel welcome in our classes at the MAC.  I know I speak for the whole team of instructors and trainers when I say, we love having you in class, we love working with you, and we will meet you at your fitness level.  We are happy to help you, challenge you, or modify the work for you.  We are happy to talk to you before, during or after class.  PLEASE, reach out to us, as our job is to help you on your fitness path, whatever your goals or motivations are.  And, when you go out of town, or are injured, don't disappear from us. Let us know what is going on in your life, because we miss you when we don't have you in class or see you around the club. You can find regular announcements, updates, schedule changes and other items on our MAC Facebook page and in our private MAC GX group. If you need to be added to the private group, friend me on Facebook, let me know you wish to be added to the private group, and I will add you.  Please know, you are all welcome in our classes!

With Health and Happiness,

Melissa O'Toole

Meet Our New General Manager

Please meet our new General Manger, Travis Nall.  Travis comes to MAC from successfully managing a local Gold's Gym, and he is looking forward to the challenge of expanding and growing the services and amenities at the MAC.  You have likely observed changes already taking place, as Travis works to improve and
grow our personal training services, to include training for kids and functional training for adults.  His personal mantra regarding fitness is, "If you don't make time for exercise now, make time for illness later." He believes this states the importance of choosing a healthy lifestyle on a daily basis.  Travis grew up in Richmond and was an avid soccer player, including playing soccer at Radford.  The MAC is a family affair for Travis, as his parents have joined and work out most days of the week, and you may also spot his wife and two adorable kids at the club too!

Private Yoga Personal Training Sessions
Why invest in yoga personal training? A private session allows for a more intimate view into YOUR practice. You can start a new practice, deepen your current practice or spend some time working with an injury or specific goal or concern.

Injuries and health concerns can make a normal yoga class impractical for some participants. A yoga instructor teaching several students at one time cannot focus on individual needs or ensure that the poses will not further injure or strain a particular person. Furthermore, health concerns like pregnancy, diabetes or heart disease may require special alterations to one's yoga practice.   When health concerns are a potential issue, it is best to have a private yoga lesson with a properly trained Yoga Therapist. This can aid in working around the problem, avoid further complications, and help to ease pain or lessen the effects of a certain diagnosis.

T he MAC fitness department announces that yoga personal training sessions are now available and offered by MAC yoga instructor and certified Yoga Therapist, Shannon Somogyi.  If you are interested in exploring a deeper, personalized yoga practice, for any reason, please stop by the fitness desk or the front desk to get in touch with Shannon.  Read Shannon's biography below to learn about her training and credentials.
