Hello Friends,
I hope you're staying cool this summer, enjoying the best of the season. Speaking of season's treats, don't forget to stop by the Howard County Farmer's Market at the Miller Branch Library on Wednesdays to pick up fresh fruits, veggies and much more! Not only do you get the freshest produce, but you help support our local farmers. See below for times.
I can't wait to have a deep-fried Oreo at the Howard County Fair! It runs August 6 - August 13. A schedule of events can be found here.
It's helpful to be able to spend time outdoors during the latest upsurge in the COVID rates in our county (and around the country). Please see below for the latest guidance from the Howard County Health Department.
Take care and stay safe,

The Font Hill Neighborhood Association does a wonderful job celebrating the holidays, and I appreciated the invitation to join in the car parade for their Independence Day procession through Font Hill and Dunloggin. It was a spectacular show of community patriotic spirit. Thank you to the many organizers and participants!

National Suicide Prevention Hotline is no longer the lengthy 1-800 # it used to be, but simply 988
|
|
In 2020, Congress passed the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act which authorized a new, three digit dialing code, 988, for suicide and mental health crisis support. The shift to the new 988 crisis hotline on July 16, 2022 marks a significant step forward in the transition to a crisis care system for mental health. This short number is intended to make access to help regarding mental health crises easier and more accessible, and will hopefully become cemented into the American conscience the same way 911 is.
988 offers 24/7 access to trained crisis counselors who can help people experiencing mental health-related distress. That could be:
- Thoughts of suicide,
- Mental health or substance use crisis, or
- Any other kind of emotional distress.
People can call or text 988 or chat 988lifeline.org for themselves or if they are worried about a loved one who may need crisis support. 988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the United States, you can reach a trained crisis counselor who can help.

How Verizon's Migration from Copper to a Fiber Network May Impact Landline Users
|
|
Verizon has chosen to replace its traditional copper network in certain communities and is migrating customers to a fiber network. Customers receiving landline phone service may be impacted by the transition and should be aware that some features and functionalities on the copper network may differ on the fiber network.
As a Verizon customer, once migrated to a fiber network, the price you pay for your current calling plan for landline telephone service will remain the same, until you decide to change. The landline telephone service delivered over a fiber network is not the same as Verizon’s FiOS digital voice service. If you are migrated, check your bill and look for any changes in cost.
To learn more about what changes might occur if you are migrated from the copper to fiber network, check out OPC's guide: https://bit.ly/CopperToFiber.

|
Second Round Of Program Will Provide $25 Million In Incentives
Governor Larry Hogan today announced the opening of the second application round for Project Restore, an economic recovery initiative that provides financial incentives for small businesses and commercial developers to revitalize vacant retail and commercial space.
Through Project Restore, the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development will administer $25 million in rental and operational grants to new and expanding Maryland small businesses to assist with startup costs and incentivize commercial investment in vacant spaces. Launched last year by Governor Hogan, Project Restore has already assisted more than 350 Maryland businesses.
Project Restore provides two grant opportunities for businesses, including nonprofits, that are expanding, moving to or opening in a property that was previously vacant for at least six months.
The Property Assistance Grant provides up to $30,000 for one year to support costs associated with rent, mortgage payment or property improvements as applicable.
The Business Operations Grant provides up to $250,000 per calendar year to support capital costs like property improvements and equipment, as well as operating costs such as staff salaries, marketing, and inventory.
Applicants can apply for Project Restore assistance beginning Thursday, July 7, 2022. Applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis.
