This Sunday, May 15, the children will be singing and leading during worship and we will be celebrating our shared ministry with the scouts.

I am so excited to have a greenhouse in my backyard. As many of you know my mom and I spent time in January dreaming about planting seeds in a greenhouse this spring. She had a greenhouse on her farm in Tennessee and I have been trying to talk Damon into building one for the last several years. Well, we found one and ordered it in February with the idea of putting it up in March. My mom, Heather, and I talked about what we wanted to plant in it, how we wanted to decorate it, and we dreamed of early morning coffee or late night drinks in our special place.
This spring, things did not go the way we planned. To be honest I thought about returning the greenhouse. Without my mom here, would I really enjoy the space? Would it just make me sad? So many questions, but I decided to keep it.

My brother Johnny assisted Damon and together they spent over 75 hours putting it together. Eleanor, Heather, and I have invested even more time decorating the inside, repurposing what we have until I figure out just what I want on the inside. I planted herbs and vegetable seeds last week. Eleanor helped dig holes for plants to be transplanted around the greenhouse that used to have life on my parent’s farm.

I have discovered I need some kind of system to exhaust the hot air and a way to have electricity. I need to figure out a system to keep everything watered well. But I have also discovered that this place that was to be a place of peace and joy for my mom, is a place that is giving me great peace. Thank you to so many of you who have helped make this all possible.

I took a deep breath and went out this last week with my first cup of coffee. What did I find? How did I feel? I was washed with the the words from Psalm 46:1-4 and 10, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult….Be still and know that I am God.” Such a peace came over me as these words echoed in my soul. This indeed is a peaceful place.

My world has changed, in fact our whole world has changed, but God has not. God is still present. Sometimes we just need to be still and connect with God. When was the last time that you were still? How can we continue to find moments to be still and know God? I will be spending plenty of time in the greenhouse, which I have named “Ancora Posto” which is Italian for “be still”. I will be reading scripture, journaling, listening to music, and just being still so that I can find that peace through connecting with God.

I would encourage you to find your own way and space to “be still.”

Love and peace in Christ, Mary

THANK YOU!
The Mission Outreach Team would like to thank all of our donors and bidders for the 2022 Talent Auction that was held on April 9, 2022. You made this the most successful Talent Auction by far in history! You raised over $25,000 that will support a variety of mission opportunities, including the Middle School Mission Trip, the God's Country Cooperative Parish Mission Trip, and our covenant Missionary in Liberia - Helen Roberts-Evans. The Mission Outreach Team will be researching other mission needs as well. There are hardly words for such a successful fundraiser, but maybe 2 Corinthians 9:11 will touch the surface in saying "You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." Amen and thank you all again.
SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM NEWS
Meet our new Summer Lunch Program Coordinator, Kristina Kotila. Kristina has 4 daughters ranging in age from 10-21 years old. She has been working in the South Lyon Community Schools for 5 years, first in the Bartlett Elementary School kitchen and then at Millennium Middle School kitchen. She is currently a manager at Bartlett Elementary. Prior to her work in the SLCS, she was a stay-at-home mom until her youngest started kindergarten. She loves camping and her two dogs and cat. At Bartlett Elementary, she lets everyone know that she doesn't want any child to go hungry. Every child can always come in and get something little if they are still hungry. Please welcome Kristina and let her know if you are willing to help this summer.
PARSONAGE RENOVATIONS
Just like your home, our parsonage needs updating to bring it inline with community standards and the requirements of the Michigan Conference. The first project that the Trustees would like to tackle is providing a second full bath. This will make our parsonage a more comfortable option for current and future families. Right now there is only 1.5 baths, and the Michigan UMC Parsonage requirements are for 2 full baths. As you can imagine, this project alone will cost in excess of $15,000 and our current budget and capital funds cannot cover the cost. If you would like to contribute toward helping get our parsonage up to date, please consider making a donation indicating it is to be used for "parsonage renovations."

COVID RESPONSE TEAM UPDATE
The COVID Response team is sending you this updated information on COVID in Michigan. Our hope is that you use the information to determine your risk of serious illness and to know what steps might lessen that risk. Also, there is now medication available for early treatment of COVID to prevent serious illness.

Currently, the state of Michigan, as a whole, is in the low-risk range. However, Livingston, Oakland, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties are in the Medium Risk range. There are currently three factors the CDC uses to determine risk:
  • New COVID cases per 100,000 people in the past 7 days.
  • New COVID hospital admissions per 100,000 people in the past 7 days.
  • Percent of inpatient hospital beds occupied by COVID patients.
  •            (Please note that these are new standards from the CDC since the beginning of the year.)

In the case of our local counties, we are considered Medium Risk due to the number of cases. Fortunately, hospital admissions and percent of beds occupied by COVID patients have remained low, although slowly increasing.

CDC recommends the following at medium risk levels if you are over age 65 or have health risks:

In our worship space, masks are a choice, not a requirement.
