MINISTRY IN MOTION

Past, Present, and Future

This month gives us a wonderful opportunity to look back, to look around today, and to dream toward the future as we see God at work in South Lyon First UMC. A special thanks to Molly Klemens for creating a video to help us see just what has been going on in 2023. Of course, we have an opportunity to be part of the future work alongside of God here at South Lyon First UMC.

PUB THEOLOGY

We are gathering at Third Monk Brewing on Wednesday, September 13th, @ 7:30 pm

This week we will discuss Fears, Ghosting, Eating & Drinking, and Leaving Church

and anything else that is on your heart. Please come and join us for a cold beer (…or pop) and a lively conversation.

CHILI COOK-OFF FUNDRAISER OCTOBER 8

The Trustees are hosting a Chili Cook-off fundraiser for concrete repair and other Trustee projects. Join us on Sunday October 8th (right after church) at 12:30PM. We will have a tailgate style cook-off and other food to eat (hot dogs, mac n cheese, chips, desert) with a TV set up to watch the Lion’s Game, corn hole and other tailgate games! Please sign up on the kiosk or by calling the church office and let us know if you are bringing chili or other treats and the number of guests attending (It is not required to enter the Chili Cook-off to come to this event).

AND THE WINNER IS ...

On Fall Kick-off Sunday, your favorite verses went head to head in a game of Verses v. Verses! It was a great reminder of some of the greatest messages in the Bible and a wonderful time of fellowship. Ultimately, Matthew 7:12 ("Therefore, you should treat people in the same way that you want people to treat you; this is the Law and the Prophets.") received the most votes. Click on this link below to see the other top favorites.

Thank you for your participation this summer!

Bible Stories for Grown-Ups – a six-week Sunday School option for the commitment-phobic. Hosted by David Ascher, this is an opportunity to re-consider stories many read as children, including Noah's Ark, the binding of Isaac, Jonah and the big fish, Jesus and Zacchaeus, Jesus healing a blind man, and the parable of the talents. Sunday to Monday: This class explores 3 questions about Sunday’s scripture: What does it say? What does it mean? How can we put this scripture into action this week? Contact Karen Murphy.

Encounters: Studying If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat.  Contact Lindy Juergens.

Seekers: Will be taking a deeper dive into The Questions Jesus Asked. Contact Cherie @ 372crt@gmail.com with questions.

Looking to add some mums to your yard for Fall? South Lyon Co-op Preschool is doing their annual Mum Fundraiser at South Lyon First UMC. These mums are large, beautiful and are sure to add some beautiful color to your porches! The mum's are 3 for $40 or $14 each and are available in yellow, red, white, purple and orange! They all come in two gallon buckets and are from Pinter's Flowerland in Belleville. Please keep in mind the colors selected could appear different (for example, the orange could appear more like a bronze).

Paying by check is the preferred method of payment but Zelle is an option as well. Please be sure to consolidate your entire order into one payment! Thank you so much for supporting our school!!

SEPTEMBER MISSION OF THE MONTH

The mission for the month for Septemeber is Active Faith.

Active Faith has been a part of our community for over 30 years, since nine local pastors came together to create Active Faith community Services.

Active Faith’s Mission: Our Mission is to provide long term and temporary assistance to those who have fallen on difficult times in hopes of returning them to the independent pursuit of their life’s goals.

Active Faith is constantly changing to meet the needs of the community by distributing 195,605 pounds of food, counseling, clothing, children’s tutoring, access and knowledge of outside resources, and the THAW fund site for utility help for over 600 families. In 2011, Active Faith was able to offer the Capernaum Dental and Health Clinics. With your prayers and support our church members along with other churches, our local clergy, and our local community, came together to form Capernaum, a 501C(3) that hosts these clinics.

Active faith provides so many opportunities to help our community; Grow a row, Strike Out Hunger, Postal Food Drive, golf outings, Sponsor a Shelf, and other donor opportunities. There are over 100 companies who support Active Faith. Many of Active Faiths volunteers belong to the First United Methodist church. Please visit their website at: www.activefaithcs.org to learn more.

Please consider supporting Active Faith because together we can help those who have fallen and lift them up through our prayers, support, and actions. Hebrew 13:16

Do not neglect to do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. The Mission Team

VOLUNTEER NURSERY HELP NEEDED

Dear Church Family,

I am Bobbie Bushey and I have volunteered to be the nursery coordinator. I did

this because I want our families and little ones to feel welcome and I know all

of you want this also. I also volunteered because I know our church family is

always willing to lend a helping hand, so we will have many volunteers.

We are asking for volunteers to enjoy the company of our little ones for both

church services. We have many wonderful men and women in our church family who would be fantastic volunteers in the nursery. Please take some time in prayer and listen to

God to hear if he is nudging you to volunteer. We would like to have two

volunteers for each Sunday.

You can sign up below so you can play with our little ones when it is convenient

for you. We need volunteers starting now. If you are willing to volunteer, please send me your name, telephone number and email address. We would like to develop a list of volunteers. Please call me or email me or talk to me at church with any questions you may have. I am looking forward to a great year in the nursery.

Blessings,

Bobbie

Jesus said to his disciples, “Let the. children come to Me, and do not forbid them;

for of such is he kingdom of God. Mark 10:14

And he took them (the children) in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed

them. Mark 10:16

We are currently in desperate need for volunteers on Sunday mornings in the nursery in September. If you are willing, please sign up to help using this link:
