Message from Pastor John

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

Last week the Arizona State Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision surrounding confidentiality and clergy. The case surrounded a man, who was Mormon, who confessed to his bishop that he had sexually abused his daughter. The bishop then made the man confess to his wife what he had done, and also discussed the issue with a church board considering punishment for a violation of church law. But, the bishop never told the authorities about the abuse. The man then went on abusing for another six years, and started abusing two more of his children before he was arrested. It was not stated why his wife did not report.

The man’s abused children then filed suit against the LDS church for their refusing to notify the authorities, which allowed the abuse to continue and increase. While the church argued the confidentiality of the confessional, the children argued that bringing their mother into the conversation and then also divulging it to a larger church body already violated the secrecy rules of the confessional, and therefore shouldn’t be protected. The lower courts ruled in the children’s favor, but the Supreme Court overturned those rulings. Some are calling this a clear victory for religious freedom, and victim/survivor organizations are bemoaning it, with one saying that “you can tell an entire stadium what happened as long as you also claim it’s secret, and then nothing can be done.”

New Mexico laws regarding the confidentiality of the confessional are very similar to Arizona. And even though clergy are mandatory reporters, the courts here have also consistently ruled that the confidentiality rule overrides the mandatory reporting rules. And what Arizona’s ruling said is that it is not up to the courts to decide what can be divulged out of the confessional, each church needs to make that decision. I agree with that in principle, but also have serious concerns about it as well.

New Mexico says that for these conversations to be considered protected, and therefore secret, they must meet three criteria:

1.    They must be made to a person in a capacity where they are acting as a spiritual advisor, which makes is broader than just clergy.

2.    There must be an expectation of privacy and that the information would not be divulged without authorization from the person confessing.

3.    The practice must align with the rules and practices of that particular religious group.

When people come to me for counseling, or to make a “confession”, the second part of which doesn’t happen often, but it does happen, I clearly serve the role as defined in number 1. But, I also have a sign on both of my doors, it’s on the main office door and also in Phillip’s office that says “What you say here stays here, unless: Someone is hurting you; you want to hurt yourself; you want to hurt someone else; you give permission to share.” That is my personal standard for what gets said to me.

And therefore, that notification serves to break rule number 2. I don’t know that the UMC has a particular standard of practice around confidentiality, although I am going to ask the Bishop for clarification. And since he also oversees Arizona I’m guessing I am not the only one asking for a statement. But, since I strongly believe that one of the things we are called to do as Christians is to protect and stand up for the most vulnerable I don’t think protecting abusers from continuing their abuse is in my call as a minister.

Fortunately, I can so that in twenty plus years in ministry everything told me has stayed in my confidence, but there is a big difference between “I shoplifted” and “I’m abusing someone.” And there is lots of grey area too. And when I have needed more advice, I have sought it out, with others also bound by confidentiality and never giving specifics.

But I just want to reiterate for points two and three by New Mexico law that there can be an expectation of privacy when speaking with me, but it is not absolute. And it is my practice to act in my role as a mandatory reporter when and if that becomes necessary.

If you have questions or concerns about this, please feel free to speak with me.

Blessings,

John

Sunday: The scripture readings for Sunday, August 9, are Exodus 1:8-2:10; Psalm 138; Romans 12:1-8 and Matthew 16:13-20. Sunday's message, "What will your verse be?", will be on the passage from Romans and the movie Dead Poets Society. We will show the movie at 6 pm on Wednesday and it is also available on our website. Sunday is a contemporary service and we will also do a blessing of the backpacks as school begins.

Questions to help you prepare: What does it mean not to be conformed to the world? How do we transform our minds? How do those things impact how we live? What do you think is your function in the body of Christ? How does this idea get played out in the film?

Bible History begins New Study Sunday, August 5th at 9 a.m.

You're invited to join the Bible History class on Sunday as they begin a new study on Adam Hamiliton's book, Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times. Books are available in the church office.

You’d be hard-pressed to overstate the extent to which fear, anxiety, and worry permeate our lives today. Fear wreaks havoc on our relationships and communities. It leads us into making bad decisions. It holds us back from the very pursuits that promise fulfillment and joy.

Unafraid is Hamilton's insightful and impassioned response. Drawing on recent research, inspiring real-life examples, and fresh biblical insight, Hamilton uses  a mixture of facts and faith to help readers understand and counter fears related to such outsize perils as death and illness, as well as the everyday anxieties all of us encounter. He invites us to:

Face our fears with a bias of hope

Examine our fears in light of the facts

Attack our anxieties with action

Release our cares to God

Writing with generosity and intelligence, Hamilton shows how believer and unbeliever alike can develop sustaining spiritual practices and embrace Jesus’s recurring counsel: “Do not be afraid.” For anyone struggling with fear or wondering how families and communities can thrive in troubled times, Unafraid offers an informed and inspiring message full of practical solutions.

Bible History class meets on Sunday mornings in the Friendship and online via Zoom at 9 a.m. Books are available to pick up in the church office this week.

United Women in Faith Host Mission u
at McCurdy Ministries August 14- 16

  • Join us at Mission u August 14-16 at McCurdy Ministries in Espanola as we explore the theme, Experiencing Emmanuel. How do we experience God in times of joy and in challenging times of anxiety, fear, or sadness?
  • Can we experience God’s presence in community as we work for justice?

Mission u will explore the times in the Bible when people experienced Emmanuel, or “God with us.” What can we learn from these Emmanuel encounters in the Bible to help inform our discernment of faith, hope, and love in action? We will learn about the three faces of God during our worship services. The Infinite Face/Opening Worship, the Intimate Face/Closing Worship, and if you desire to hear about the Near Face, stay for Sunday morning. The Near Face of God Service of Healing will be after breakfast on Sunday.

We will be using the adult curriculum: A Deep Knowing by Linda Louise Furtado. It is not necessary for you to have your own book, but if you would like, you can order one through Amazon. (This Amazon service saves our organization $150K a year!)

Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons with Racism in Medicine by Uché Blackstock MD

What Dr. Uché Blackstock did not understand as a child or learn about at Harvard Medical School were the profound and long-standing systemic inequities that mean just 2 percent of all U.S. physicians today are Black women; the racist practices and policies that ensure Black Americans have far worse health outcomes than any other group in the country; and the flawed system that endangers the well-being of communities like theirs. As an ER physician, and later as a professor in academic medicine, Dr. Blackstock became profoundly aware of the systemic barriers that Black patients and physicians continue to face.

Legacy is Dr. Blackstock’s odyssey from child to medical student to practicing physician—to finally seizing her own power as a health equity advocate against the backdrop of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.

We will discuss Legacy on Wednesday September 9. There are books available at Mesa Public Library and on the United Women in Faith shelf in the church library and on the United Women in Faith Kindle in the church office. Legacy is in the Education for Missions category.

August Creation Justice Tip

Start with something. Choose one or two easy changes to make, perhaps swapping single-use water bottles for a reusable one or refusing plastic bags. Commit to your action and allow it to lead you to another “something” you can do for Earth.
