Q&A with Penny Manship
Readers have pointed out the amazing detail that makes this series come to life. When did your love of detailed writing begin?
I think it started the moment I realized that details are really just memories in disguise. Growing up in the Midwest, I learned to notice the little things—handwritten signs in shop windows, the sound of a bell on a bookstore door, the way everyone has an opinion about the weather. When I began writing, I wanted readers to feel like they could step right into the scene, smell the coffee, trip over the book boxes, and laugh right along with the characters.
What inspired your series concepts?
Honestly? Independent bookstores and road trips. I’ve always loved watching how books bring people together in different places. Every state has its own personality, and I started imagining what would happen if a well-meaning bookseller tried to spread book joy everywhere she went. Add in my own travel mishaps—missed turns, overloaded trunks, and well-intentioned plans gone sideways—and the series practically wrote itself.

Can you explain what readers might find intriguing about your stories?
Readers tend to connect with the heart of the stories: the idea that books matter, people matter, and laughter helps when things don’t go as planned. The challenges are comical rather than scary, the stakes are personal rather than epic, and the victories often come in small but meaningful ways—like matching the right reader with the right book at exactly the right moment.

Tell us more about your new book.
My newest book is Booked Solid in Wisconsin, and it might be my coziest adventure yet. The bookseller finds herself navigating lakeshore towns, surprise festivals, and a rather opinionated local book club—all while trying to keep her traveling bookshop afloat. It’s a story about persistence, community, and learning that sometimes the best plans are the ones you don’t make.
